This research investigates the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) in enhancing neuroanatomy learning among medical students, focusing on optimizing cognitive load, intrinsic motivation, and user experience. A total of 77 s-year medical students participated in the study, which compared traditional video-based instruction with three VR conditions: active, guided, and passive. The results demonstrate that VR significantly improved anatomical learning performance compared to traditional methods, particularly in the passive and active conditions. VR also enhanced intrinsic motivation, reduced extraneous cognitive load, and increased germane cognitive load. Interestingly, the guided VR condition yielded the poorest learning performance, although differences between the VR conditions were not statistically significant. These findings suggest that higher interactivity is not inherently linked to better learning outcomes in VR-based education. The study highlights the importance of balancing interactivity and cognitive load in the design of effective VR learning environments. Overall, VR holds strong potential as an educational tool, but its instructional design must be carefully tailored to support both motivation and cognitive efficiency. Future research should further examine the role of interaction modes and learner expertise in shaping the instructional effectiveness of VR. © 2025 Elsevier Lt

The off-label use of doxycycline to prevent certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs), outside controlled research environments, has been occurring for several years. The objective of this study was to describe the off-label use of doxycycline as a preventive treatment for STIs by conducting a review of the literature, including analysis of a social network. In total, 11 eligible references were identified, comprising 9 letters and 2 original articles. One press article and six Reddit® discussions were also selected. Most doxycycline users identified in this study were men who have sex with men, with numerous partners and without using condoms. Doxycycline was mainly prescribed by a doctor, but some users obtain the medication in its veterinary form via the internet. HIV PrEP was identified as a factor leading to the decision to take doxycycline. While most users expressed confidence in its efficacy, some expressed reservations due to its inability to provide comprehensive protection against all STIs, and due to the occurrence of side effects. The increase in self-medication with doxycycline for STI prevention necessitates enhanced monitoring, addressing both disease transmission risks and potential adverse drug reactions

Using Visual Cues to Prevent Memory Confusion Between the Virtual and the Real in Augmented Reality

EMERGREEN: A greenhouse platform for studying emerging plant diseases
The EMERGREEN platform (EMERging plants pathogens in GREENhouses and labs) is dedicated to stud-ies on emerging plant diseases characterized by complex interactions between a host plant, a quaran-tine organism (OQ) or a regulated pathogen, its potential vectors, and the environment. It has been designed to meet the needs of basic and applied research in agriculture and forestry, two economic sectors heavily affected by emerging diseases, and the needs of the national, international academic scientific community and industrial stakeholders. Manipulating pathogens listed as QO requires author-ization from government services. EMERGREEN’s experience in applying for accreditation and monitor-ing compliance with the handling of quarantine organisms enables us to meet the needs of the scien-tific community for QO manipulation and preparation of accreditation dossiers. EMERGREEN offers support services for project management, provision of scientific equipment in confined facilities, and support for experimentation such as phenotyping of pathogen-plant host-vector interactions. The EMERGREEN platform comprises three modules, organized to meet biosafety requirements. Currently, EMERGREEN hosts: a 180 m² biosafety level 2 module for acquisition/transmission studies by experi-mental insect vectors of Flavescence dorée phytoplasma (FDp); a 265 m² biosafety level 3 module for the study of plant virus etiology and the transmission/acquisition of FDp with the natural vector; and a 420 m² biosafety level 2 module for pine diseases. Funding has been obtained for the construction of biosafety level 2 and 3.EMERGREEN (https://ror.org/020dmyn61), through its agents' involvement, is represented in numerous scientific and technological networks, which serve as strong means of access to technological innova-tions and enhance the platform's scope of expertise. These skills and know-how, as well as the privi-leged link with users, are sources of continuous improvement of research equipment. OBJECTIVES: To investigate trajectories of regional brain volume changes in multiple system atrophy (MSA) and their potential utility as surrogate markers of disease progression in the cerebellar subtype (MSA-C). BACKGROUND: Reliable biomarkers for tracking disease progression in MSA are urgently needed. Although several studies have explored neuroimaging markers, imaging measures that are reliable and reproducible at the individual-level are lacking. METHODS: Longitudinal three-dimensional (3D)-T1 images from multiple cohorts of 21 subjects with probable MSA-C, 19 with probable MSA-parkinsonian subtype (MSA-P), 113 with Parkinson's disease, and 227 healthy controls were processed using the FreeSurfer longitudinal pipeline. Extracted volumes were assessed for individual longitudinal trajectories, intra-individual variability, and pontine regional volume decline. RESULTS: Pontine volumes showed lower intra-individual variability in measurements compared with other infratentorial brain regions. All probable MSA-C patients exhibited a decline in pontine volume, ranging from -3.6% to -16.8% per year (mean: -9.1%), falling more than two standard deviations below the mean of healthy controls. In MSA-C, the temporal dynamics of pontine volumes exhibited nonlinear changes, characterized by progressive atrophy in the earlier period of the disease, followed by a pre-plateau phase associated with advanced disability in the later period. Predictive modeling suggests that pontine atrophy may begin before symptom onset of MSA-C. CONCLUSIONS: Pontine volume is a sensitive marker of disease progression, exhibiting a nonlinear decline with low intra-individual variability in measurements and greater volume loss in the earlier stages, reaching a pre-plateau phase in the later stages with advanced disability. © 2025 The Author(s). BACKGROUND: Over the last 25 years, digital health interventions in low- and middle-income countries have undergone substantial transformations propelled by technological advancements, increased internet accessibility, and a deeper appreciation of the benefits of digital tools in enhancing health care availability. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the evolution, impact, and prospects of digital health interventions in low- and middle-income countries, highlighting their role in improving health care accessibility and equity. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of digital health initiatives scanning the past two and a half decades focused on the progression from basic SMS platforms to sophisticated mobile health apps and other health digital interventions. Relevant literature and case studies were reviewed to elucidate key milestones, successes, challenges, and opportunities in advancing digital health initiatives in low- and middle-income regions. RESULTS: Digital health initiatives in low- and middle-income countries initially targeted specific health concerns, such as malaria diagnosis and treatment, through text-based platforms, demonstrating their efficacy in reaching remote and marginalized communities. With the proliferation of mobile phone ownership and internet access, these interventions evolved into comprehensive mobile health apps, facilitating self-care support, patient education, chronic disease monitoring, and remote consultations. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the adoption of digital health interventions, particularly in disseminating health information, supporting contact tracing efforts, and enabling virtual consultations to alleviate strain on health care systems. CONCLUSIONS: The future of digital health interventions in low- and middle-income countries holds immense promise, fueled by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain. However, challenges persist in ensuring equitable access to digital health technologies, addressing disparities in digital literacy, and establishing robust health care infrastructure. Collaboration among governments, health care providers, technology innovators, and communities is essential to overcome these challenges and harness the full potential of digital health to improve health care outcomes in low- and middle-income countries
