Translating poetry through AI and MT: The case study of "a slumber did my spirit seal" by William Wordsworth.
In today's fast-paced world, translating pragmatic or technical texts has become significantly quicker than in the past. This acceleration can be attributed to the advancements in translation technologies, which have revolutionized the translation process, making it moreefficient and timesaving. The presence of state-of-the-art tools and technologies in translation has contributed significantlyto theproductivity oftranslation services, particularly inthe localization industry, where simultaneous global releases of products are crucial (Olohan, 2017; Balkul, 2016, Pym, 2014).Astranslation needs continue torise, thevolumeofmaterialsrequiringtranslationhas expandedexponentially. Thisgrowth posesa challengeto the traditional approach of human translation, prompting theexploration of alternativemethodstomeettheincreasing demand for multilingual content. In recent years, machine translation systems have emerged as a potential solution, raising questions about the future role of human translators. Initially developed to provide acceptable and readable translations of pragmatictexts, machinetranslationsystems arenowbeingtested in literary and poetic content. Even more interestingly, AI systems have also started to be tested in poetry and literary translation. Whilesuch systemsseem adequate in technical translations, their application to the nuances and complexitiesof literary worksremainsrelatively uncharted territory
Investigation of oxidation and hot corrosion behavior of manganese slag coatings
In this study, the oxidation and hot corrosion behaviors of the manganese slag coating system were investigated. Manganese slag is a waste product generated during metal extraction and is used to reduce environmental impacts and raw material consumption. CoNiCrAlY bond coatings were produced using the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) technique, and manganese slag coatings were produced using the atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process. The produced coatings were subjected to isothermal oxidation (5 h, 25 h, 50 h, and 100 h) and hot corrosion tests (1 h, 3 h, 5 h, and 10 h) at 600 degrees C. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that the coating system containing manganese slag maintained its durability at certain temperatures and times without structural degradation. The findings show that manganese slag coating system is a potential alternative for different industrial applications. This study highlights the innovative uses of waste materials in surface engineering and their performance in high temperature-based processes
Insights from Earth Map: Unraveling Environmental Dynamics in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin
The Euphrates-Tigris Basin is experiencing significant environmental transformations due to climate change, Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULCC), and anthropogenic pressures. This study employs Earth Map, an open-access remote sensing platform, to comprehensively assess climate trends, vegetation dynamics, water resource variability, and land degradation across the basin. Key findings reveal a geographic shift toward aridity, with declining precipitation in high-altitude headwater regions and rising temperatures exacerbating water scarcity. While cropland expansion and localized improvements in land productivity were observed, large areas-particularly in hyperarid and steppe zones-show early signs of degradation, increasing the risk of dust source expansion. LULCC analysis highlights substantial wetland loss, irreversible urban growth, and agricultural encroachment into fragile ecosystems, with Iraq experiencing the most pronounced transformations. Climate projections under the SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios indicate intensified warming and aridity, threatening hydrological stability. This study underscores the urgent need for integrated water management, Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), and climate-resilient policies to safeguard the basin's ecological and socioeconomic resilience. Earth Map is a vital tool for monitoring environmental changes, offering rapid insights for policymakers and stakeholders in this data-scarce region. Future research should include higher-resolution datasets and localized socioeconomic data to improve adaptive strategies.Republic of Turkiye Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the Directorate General for Combating Desertification and Erosion [4389]The APC was funded by the Republic of Turkiye Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the Directorate General for Combating Desertification and Erosion within the framework of the national project entitled Preparation of Tuerkiye's Desertification Sensitivity and Risk Maps which is Project Number: 4389
Solving Time-Fractional Nonlinear Variable-Order Delay PDEs Using Feedforward Neural Networks
This study presents an innovative application of Feedforward Neural Networks ‘FNNs’ to solve Variable-Order Fractional Partial Differential Equations ‘VO-FPDEs’ with time delays. Utilizing the Caputo definition, the variable-order fractional derivatives are approximated in terms of integer-order derivatives. The problem is reformulated as a system of partial differential equations with delay terms, which is then addressed using ‘FNNs’ to achieve explicit approximate solutions. Comprehensive error and convergence analyses validate the method’s precision and reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is highlighted through numerical examples, with graphical and tabular representations showcasing minimal absolute errors and robust convergence. These results demonstrate the proposed method’s efficiency and simplicity, establishing it as a powerful tool for addressing complex fractional delay problems. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT GROUND TYPES ON AGILITY PERFORMANCE WITH AND WITHOUT THE BALL IN FOOTBALL PLAYERS
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of different ground types (synthetic, natural grass and hardwood ground) on agility performance with and without the ball in football players. A single-group cross-sectional quantitative research design was used in the study. The research group consists of 16 volunteer male players from the Tersane Sports team in the Sinop Amateur Football League. All applications in the research were made on three different surfaces (natural grass, synthetic grass and parquet floor) with a 48-hour interval. After height and weight measurements, the Illinois Agility and 505 Agility Tests were applied to the football players with and without the ball on natural grass, synthetic grass and hardwood surfaces. The SPSS 22.0 program was used for data analysis, and descriptive statistical methods such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation were utilized in the evaluation of the data. According to the results of both agility tests applied with and without the ball, it was determined that the agility test results obtained on natural grass were better compared to other surfaces (synthetic grass and parquet floor). As a result, it can be said that the mechanical properties of the surface are decisive in physical performance and agility, and the ground used in training or competitions can have an effect on performance and injury period
Psychometric Properties of the Interpersonal Hopelessness Scale and Testing the Assumptions of Interpersonal Theory of Suicide
BackgroundThe interpersonal theory of suicide presumes that hopelessness about interpersonal conditions of perceived burdensomeness (PB) and thwarted belongingness (TB) precipitate active suicide ideation. However, it was suggested that there is a paucity of research investigating the role of interpersonal hopelessness (IH) in suicide ideation.ObjectiveIn Study 1, the objective was to adapt the Interpersonal Hopelessness Scale (IHS) to Turkish. Study 2 aimed to test whether PB, TB, general hopelessness, and IH predict suicide ideation and to investigate how much of the unique variance in suicide ideation was explained by IH.MethodsIn two studies using cross-sectional design (Study 1: N = 387, 53.2% female; Study 2: N = 407, 70.52% female), the variables of interest were tested through confirmatory factor analysis and a hierarchical regression model. Study measures for both studies were completed via paper-pencil method.ResultsThe psychometric properties of the IHS were adequate for the sample recruited, and PB, TB, general hopelessness, and IH were significant predictors of suicide ideation, with IH accounting for statistically significant unique variance.ConclusionsResults offer preliminary evidence of the utility of the IHS and contribute to over 10 years of empirical evidence supporting the interpersonal theory of suicide within the context of young adulthood
