    No full text
Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) shell, a byproduct of chestnut processing, is a valuable source of phenolic compounds that have a range of industrial applications. This study investigated the optimization of gallic acid extraction from the outer shell of the chestnut using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and deep eutectic solvents (DES). A Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed to determine optimal extraction conditions, considering variables such as extraction time, temperature, water content, liquid-to-solid ratio, material treatment, and DES type. Results indicate that baked chestnut shell samples and choline chloride:ethylene glycol (1:2) DES yielded the highest gallic acid content, with optimal conditions of 70 degrees C, 35 min, 20% water content, and a 10:1 liquid-to-solid ratio. This study highlights the environmental and economic advantages of DES-based UAE, supporting its use as a sustainable method for extracting bioactive compounds for application in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.Bartin niversitesi [2021-FEN-CY-004]; Bartin University Scientific Research Projects (BAP); Bartin UniversityThis work was supported by the Bartin University Scientific Research Projects (BAP) (project number 2021-FEN-CY-004). No full text
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the correlation between students' degrees of smartphone addiction and postural disorders at a sports sciences faculty. The research employs a relational survey model, selected from survey models, as the study design. The sample group comprises 275 voluntary students enrolled in Bart & imath;n University's Faculty of Sports Sciences during the fall semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. A personal information form created by the researchers and the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Form (SAS-SF) were among the instruments used to collect data. To assess postural disorders, the study utilized the Posture Screen application, available on iOS and Android platforms, which has demonstrated reliability and validity for this purpose. With the assumption that the data follow a normal distribution, the SPSS 26.0 software package was used to conduct frequency, percentage, t-test, and Pearson correlation analyses. The results of the t-test showed that there was no significant difference between the gender variable and the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Form (SAS-SF). The t-test results, however, showed a significant difference between the gender variable and posture measurements in the head-shoulderchest variables. There was no discernible correlation found between smartphone addiction and assessments of posture. Based on these findings, it is suggested that university students exhibit an average level of smartphone addiction, which may negatively impact postural disorders. In this context, it is recommended university students limit smartphone use and avoid sedentary lifestyles by engaging in physical activities

Childhood obesity has been a significant concern worldwide. According to World Health Organization data the pandemic, pose a danger to the world between March 2020 and May 2023, has deepened this concern given the restriction measures such as closures taken to avoid the spread. Following the pandemic, a gap in the literature has arisen concerning the assessment of the long-term impact and potential side effects of physical activity restrictions on children. This study aims to address this gap by developing a comprehensive, needs-based physical activity school program and a web application for home settings, specifically designed for elementary schoolers in Türkiye. To gather essential information on the needs and current status of children in terms of physical and emotional well-being, as well as motor skills and physical activity habits from the perspectives of their caregivers, a thorough needs analysis study was conducted. This study used surveys. 27 volunteer parents participated in the study. The data were analyzed using content analysis. With these findings, an individual activity program consisting of different components was developed, taking into account the development levels and physical fitness levels of elementary school students. Individualized physical activity programs developed within this framework were created taking into account the individual needs and abilities of students and in order to support these needs, and were planned in two separate structures to be implemented with teachers at school and with parents at home

Octonion-valued b-metric spaces and results on its application

    No full text
This study introduces octonion-valued b-metric spaces as a natural extension of the octonion-valued metric spaces developed by establishing a partial ordering relation on octonions. Octonion-valued b-metric spaces are constructed by modifying the triangle inequality of a semi-metric space, where one side of the inequality is multiplied by a positive scalar b >= 1. On the other hand, octonion-valued metric spaces generalize the concept of classical metric spaces by employing octonions, which provide a higher-dimensional and non-associative algebraic framework. Two key reasons make this novel generalization of metric spaces very interesting: First, octonions are not even a ring since they do not have the associative feature in multiplication; second, the spaces do not meet the standard triangle inequality. In addition to explanations on sequences, convergence, Cauchy characteristics, boundedness, theorems, and associated conclusions, examples are given to help visualize this recently formed metric space. Lastly, the building of a fixed point finds extensive applications in a variety of mathematical analytic subjects as well as applied mathematics domains like differential equations and dynamical systems. Because of this, octonion-valued b-metric spaces have been used to study the Banach fixed-point theorem and a few additional fixedpoint theorems.Fujian Provincial Natural Science Foundation of China [2024J01792]; Scientific Research Fund of Fujian Provincial Education Department of China [JAT201032]The authors declare they have not used Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the creation of this article. The dark triad and mental well-being: The mediating role of cognitive flexibility and emotion regulation

    No full text
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the Dark Triad personality traits-Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy-and their effects on psychological well-being. While prior studies have extensively examined the negative psychological outcomes associated with Dark Triad traits, limited research has investigated the specific mechanisms through which cognitive flexibility and emotion regulation buffer against these effects. This study investigates the mediating roles of cognitive flexibility and emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between Dark Triad traits and psychological well-being. Data were collected from 408 participants (M age = 22.78, SD = 4.69, age range = 19-60) using the dark triad (The Short Dark Triad Scale), emotion regulation (the Difficulties with Emotion Regulation Scale Short Form), cognitive flexibility (the Cognitive Control and Cognitive Flexibility Scale), and mental well-being (the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale Short Form). The findings revealed that Machiavellianism and psychopathy were negatively related to psychological well-being, whereas narcissism was positively associated with mental well-being. Moreover, emotion regulation difficulties played a significant mediating role in the relationship between Machiavellianism and psychopathy on mental well-being, while cognitive flexibility played a smaller but notable mediating role. We discuss the limitations and future research directions

Online intercultural exchange in language teacher education: interactional resources for topic transition

    No full text
Topic management is under-explored in language learning, teaching and testing settings. It may pose particular challenges in online intercultural exchanges (OIE) or virtual exchange (VE) because of differences in frames of time, space and culture. We investigate how language teacher trainees manage topic transitions in an OIE via videoconferencing where they design and test their own tasks. Using multimodal conversation analysis, we explore parallel cases of 30-minute exchanges by two trainee teachers with the same interlocutor (expert speaker of English). Findings indicate three essential features of a successful topic transition: timing of transition (mutual agreement on timing), signalling the transition (via verbal, nonverbal and material resources) and formulating work-thus-far, work-at-hand, and work-to-come. Trainee teachers employ multiple interactional resources including the task sheet as a transition-relevant object. We note differences in teacher trainees' approach to time and task accomplishment, and how this enables or restricts intercultural dialogue. Results contribute to our understanding of topic management and VE interactional competence (VE-IC), and provide practical guidance for VE participants on how to manage topic transitions. The study also has implications for expert speakers'/teachers' skills in leading instructional conversations in language learning settings

Potential altitude change of oriental spruce in Türkiye due to global climate change

    No full text
Global climate change stands as the most consequential challenge capable of directly or indirectly impacting Earth's diverse living organisms and ecosystems. This study aims to clarify the shifts in potential distribution areas of the Oriental spruce, a key tree species widely distributed across T & uuml;rkiye, which has been observed to shift its distribution toward higher altitudes in recent decades, deviating from its historical natural range. The investigation delves into the species' viable distribution zones across altitude increments, spanning intervals up to the year 2100, scrutinizing two distinct climate scenarios: SSPs 245 and SSPs 585, referring to the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways used in CMIP6 to project greenhouse gas emissions under moderate (SSPs 245) and high (SSPs 585) trajectories. The findings manifest a discernible trend: under the SSPs 245 scenario, there emerges a contraction in suitable zones below 1300 m, accompanied by an upswing above 1300 m. In stark contrast, the SSPs 585 scenario foresees an expansion predominantly within the 1800-2600 m range, juxtaposed with declines across below 1800 m and above 2600 m. In terms of aggregate suitable distribution area, an estimated 13.58% diminution emerges under the SSPs 245 scenario, while a substantial 32.08% reduction surfaces under the SSPs 585 scenario, both by the year 2100. These revelations underscore the imperative for prompt action, not only to safeguard the Oriental spruce but also to inform broader conservation and adaptation efforts in the face of escalating global climate change.Republic of Turkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry; General Directorate of Forest Engineering; Tubitak YOK 100/2000 ScholarshipThe authors thank the supported by the Republic of Turkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Forest Engineering and the General Directorate of Meteorology for their prompt responses to our requests.
