Türkiye İçin Küresel Arazi Kullanımı/Örtüsü Haritalarının Doğruluğunun Değerlendirilmesi: ESA World Cover ve ESRI Land Cover Karşılaştırması
VISUAL ARTS AND INTERGENERATIONAL DIALOGUE: CULTURAL JOURNALISM PRACTICES IN TEACHER EDUCATION
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, people across the world experienced the transformation from traditional classrooms to virtual platforms, overcoming physical distance barriers. In visual art curricula, while local content was emphasized, pre-service teachers encountered real-world examples for implementing such content effectively. This research explored community-related teaching strategies that enhance students' learning, particularly in the context of distance education as students had returned to their homes. This study employed a qualitative case study design to investigate how pre-service visual art teachers in T & uuml;rkiye incorporated their experiences with cultural journalism into their lesson plans and designs. The research involved six pre-service teachers enrolled in an art teaching program at a university. The findings of the study were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed that the participants shifted their approach to plan design from a tourist perspective to a critical perspective. Cultural journalism practices played a significant role in helping participants move beyond clich & eacute;d representations of a place, allowing them to adopt a more in-depth and insider perspective. These practices encouraged questioning consumption-based perception management and promoted a more authentic focus on experiences-essentially fostering the ability to see without losing connection to the local context. Consequently, teacher reflected on and re-evaluated their perspectives of the places they lived through intergenerational dialog, revisiting these places as educational tools. In future research, an action study could be proposed to explore how visual culture and critical art education are conducted based on an object representing the tourist gaze in a specific locality
Middle School Students' Approaches to Optimization: Insights into Mathematical Modeling and Real-World Problem Solving
This study investigates middle school students' perspectives on optimization problems in mathematics, focusing on their problem-solving processes and learning experiences. Optimization involves finding the best solution under specific constraints or maximizing/minimizing an objective function, a concept closely related to mathematical modeling. This process is designed to develop essential skills, such as logical reasoning, prediction, argumentation, and critical thinking, by framing real-world situations as mathematical challenges. Although existing research on students' problem-solving with optimization problems primarily involves high school or university students, recent studies emphasize the necessity of introducing optimization concepts earlier in education. This study administered four optimization problems to 16 middle school students to explore their experiences and opinions. Data were collected through observations, feedback forms, and individual interviews and analyzed using descriptive and content analysis methods. The findings reveal that students' limited prior exposure to optimization problems significantly contributes to their challenges. While students generally understand the optimization problems, their performance varies notably, especially in assumption-making and mathematical calculations. The study underscores the need for systematically integrating optimization problems into the middle school curriculum to enhance students' problem-solving skills and critical thinking. It suggests incorporating mathematical modeling with optimization tasks could improve students' abstraction and problem-solving abilities. Future research could investigate the effects of optimization problems on students' problem-solving skills and mathematical understanding
PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS' AND SCHOOL COUNSELORS' EXPECTATIONS OF MATTERING IN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT: PERCEIVED SUPPORT AND PROFESSIONAL MOTIVATION
Mattering is the personal perception of individuals that they are valuable for others and that they make a difference in the lives of others. Mattering affects the sense of belonging at work, motivation, and job satisfaction. This study aims to determine prospective teachers' and prospective school counselors' expectations regarding the extent to which they will matter to students, parents, colleagues, and administrators after they start working. The study adopted a qualitative approach and was designed as a case study. The data collected from 57 prospective teachers and school counselors from different disciplines were analyzed using the content analysis method. Participants expect to matter as they have an effective teaching and counselling attitude towards their students and as they have good communication with parents. They also expect to matter to their colleagues as they are simply colleagues and work in collaboration, and they expect to matter to their administrators as they have an idealistic learning attitude and contribute to the school. Participants who expect not to matter to students and parents list the reasons as prejudices against their discipline and negative attitudes towards teachers. Similarly, there are also participants who state that they do not matter because of their colleagues'prejudices against their discipline and the indifference of their administrators. The study revealed that the general sense of mattering they feel in the school environment positively affects their professional motivation, and that in case of anti-mattering, they continue their profession by finding alternative routes

An application for reducing cheating cases in exams: Sample of Bartın University
In higher education, students engage in a structured and deliberately planned learning process to acquire both knowledge and skills. When it comes to evaluating their success, traditional assessment methods, predominantly based on exams, are widely used. However, the presence of academic dishonesty, particularly in the form of cheating, significantly undermines the integrity of this fair evaluation process. The aim of this thesis is to create an exam seating arrangement that minimizes potential cheating incidents by reducing physical proximity among students who have friendship ties. Thus, firstly, data were collected through a survey to determine the friendship ties among undergraduate students actively enrolled in the Department of International Trade and Logistics at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences during the 2023-2024 academic year. Using this data, a weighted student relationship network was created for the first time to represent the level of friendship among students. Secondly, seating arrangement data for a sample classroom where the surveyed students would take their exams were collected. For this classroom, a potential cheating scenario was assumed based on the likelihood of students sharing information during the exam with those seated directly beside them (to their right or left) or in front of or behind them. Finally, using these two data, an optimization model was developed within the scope of this thesis to address the exam seating arrangement problem for the first time. This thesis is, therefore, the first study to apply Operations Research (OR) techniques to the exam seating arrangement problem. The significance of the optimization model lies in its ability to guarantee the best seating arrangement, in contrast to the methods found in the literature. In the performed comparison testing, the algorithm proposed in the literature failed to produce the optimal seating arrangement even for a small sample, whereas the optimization model presented in this thesis produced the best seating arrangement for the same sample in a short time. Furthermore, optimal seating arrangements in which no students could cheat were achieved in a short time for the two classrooms examined within the scope of this thesis. Thus, the implementation of the exam seating arrangement developed in this thesis helps both to create a fairer academic environment for students and to reduce the physical and psychological burden on proctors
Characterization of phase-changing materials as stabilized thermal energy storage in impregnated biomaterial
In recent years, impregnation of biomaterial (wood veneers) with eutectic phase change materials (PCM) has been investigated to increase the thermal capacity of bio-based materials, which significantly affects the thermal capacity, especially in building applications requiring low heat. In this study, four eutectic phase change materials were prepared using three different fatty acids and impregnated on two wood veneers (oak and ash). The structural characterization of the prepared eutectic mixtures was examined using FT-IR, while the morphological properties of the wood veneers were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal performance was analyzed via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and their thermo-mechanical properties by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Additionally, the thermal conductivity (k values) was determined. From the results obtained, it was possible to prepare eutectic mixtures with melting temperatures around 30 degrees C with heat capacities up to 225.5 J/g. It was also generally determined that eutectic PCM, prepared from mixtures of lauric acid and palmitic acid, have lower thermal conductivity but show higher storage and loss modulus for the wood coatings leading to a balance between mechanical and thermal properties.Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu [TUBITAK-2219/BIDEB, 2022]; Scientific and Technological Research Council of TurkeyThe authors gratefully acknowledge the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-2219/BIDEB, 2022) for a visiting researcher scholarship to Dr Mustafa Zor to perform a post-doctoral stay Laval University (Quebec, CANADA)
Two parameter log-Lindley distribution with LTPL web-tool
This paper introduces the two-parameter log-Lindley distribution. It can be presented as a new flexible distribution supported on the interval (0, 1), which includes the famous log-Lindley distribution as a sub-distribution. Its important probabilistic properties are discussed. On the applied side, a statistical focus was placed on the corresponding model. Three methods were used for the parameter estimation and the effectiveness of these methods was evaluated by a simulation study. The superiority of the proposed distribution over other distributions was demonstrated with three applications on real data sets. A significant aspect of the study is the development of an associated web tool. The LTPL web tool was designed to enable users to utilize the newly developed probability distribution without requiring any programming expertise.Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at Qassim University [QU-APC-2025]The researchers would like to thank the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at Qassim University for the financial support (QU-APC-2025)
Experimental and numerical investigation of 3D-printed macro-encapsulated PCM variants for battery thermal management systems
This study presents a novel battery thermal management system (BTMS) design, which is numerically and experimentally examined, utilizing macro-encapsulation with 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) material to store phase change materials (PCM). A distinctive contribution of this study is the implementation of macroencapsulated PCM using 3D printing, which offers a leak-proof, passive, and energy-free BTMS solution. This approach addresses sealing issues and improves battery thermal management. Capric acid (CA) and microencapsulated PCM (ME) are compared to the base case with an air gap under different charge and discharge conditions. The high specific heat capacity and phase change temperature of CA-PCM enable effective battery thermal management. The BTMS effectively maintains battery temperatures within the optimal range, extending battery life. Under all charging and discharging conditions, battery temperatures in CA-BTMS are consistently lower than those in Air BTMS. The CA BTMS temperature is 37.83 degrees C in the 1.72C charging condition, compared to 38.09 degrees C in the Air BTMS system. Similarly, the CA BTMS battery temperature is 36.18 degrees C under the same Crate discharge condition, whereas the Air BTMS temperature is 36.39 degrees C. Reduced internal resistance in the CA case enhances voltage stability and energy efficiency, yielding higher average voltage values during charge and discharge cycles. CA BTMS exhibits lower voltage differences during charging than Air BTMS, and these differences are further reduced to 0.019 V, 0.012 V, and 0.01 V during discharge.TUBITAK [2219, TUBITAK-2219]; [1059B192300645]This study was conducted within the scope of a research program, TUBITAK-2219 (Application No: 1059B192300645) . Examining parental support, attitude and lifelong learning tendencies in second language learning through dialogue practice
Especially in recent years, with the rapid development of technology and its presence in almost every field, it has become necessary to know a second language. In order to follow world societies, to access information quickly around the world, to follow the studies carried out in different geographies, and even to have a good job. For these reasons, parents are aware that knowing a second language plays an important role in their own lives and their children's lives. Studies on the role of parents in learning a foreign language show that parental contribution while learning a second language increases motivation in language learning and positively affects the child's second language development. The aim of this study is to examine the possible effects of parents' English dialogue practice at home as a support tool, their attitudes towards their children's foreign language learning and their own lifelong learning tendencies. In this qualitative action research conducted with the participation of 32 parents of middle school students, the participants were asked to practice dialogue at home for four weeks, and their opinions were recorded with structured interview forms. Content analysis was conducted to determine the parents' opinions. As a result of the research, it was determined that practicing English at home with parents using a mini dialogue booklet is an enjoyable, fun, educational and motivating activity for both the child and the parent to study English outside of school. It was also determined that parents need a resource that they can use at home to support the continuation of second language learning after school
