    No full text
Introduction The descriptive study was conducted to determine the relationship between health literacy levels related to smoking, the frequency of exacerbations, and sleep quality in individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Methods The study data were collected from 217 patients who were hospitalized in the pulmonology service of a university hospital between October 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023, who applied to the outpatient clinic between October 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023, by face-to-face interview method and by obtaining verbal and written informed consent. The data collection tools used in the study were the patient information form, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment test, pittsburgh sleep quality scale, and smoking literacy scale. Results It was determined that 24% of the individuals were 60 years old or younger, 42.9% were 61-70, and 33.2% were over 70. It was determined that 25.8% of the individuals were still smoking, 49.3% of the individuals had never been hospitalized due to an exacerbation in the last year, 32.3% had been hospitalized once, and 18.4% had been hospitalized twice or more. General views about smoking increased the level of sleep quality (beta = -0.152). The total change in sleep quality level was explained by smoking literacy at a rate of 7.2% (R2 = 0.072). Smoking literacy increases the improvement of sleep quality levels (beta = -0.275). Smoking literacy increases the improvement in COPD assessment level (beta = -0.238). It was determined that the smoking literacy levels of the individuals were high, the severity of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease was at a poor level, and sleep quality was at a moderate level. Conclusion In the study, it was determined that the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease decreased as the smoking literacy level of individuals increased, sleep quality level increased as the smoking literacy level increased, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease staging worsened as smoking literacy total scores decreased

This study presents a systematic investigation into the effects of gamma (gamma) irradiation (1-4 kGy) on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films deposited by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The films were analyzed using fiber-coupled optical spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and current-voltage (I-V) measurements to assess irradiation-induced alterations. Optical transmittance exhibited a dose-dependent reduction. The optical bandgap decreased from 3.43 eV to 3.25 eV, which we attribute to defect-induced tail states in the band structure. SE results indicated a gradual decrease in the refractive index and extinction coefficient with increasing radiation dose, reflecting changes in the material's dielectric response. XRD analysis revealed significant structural degradation, as evidenced by reduced peak intensities and increased full width at half maximum (FWHM), particularly for the (100) crystallographic orientation, suggesting decreased crystallinity and enhanced lattice disorder. Electrical characterization showed an increase in sheet resistance from 146 Omega/square to 298 Omega/square and a corresponding decrease in electrical conductivity, attributed to carrier trapping at radiation-induced defect sites and reduced mobility. The combined structural, optical, and electrical findings clearly understand the mechanisms underlying radiation-induced degradation in AZO thin films, which is crucial for evaluating its reliability in radiation-prone environments

Channel noise induced stochastic effect of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons in a real classification task

    No full text
Noise is generally considered to have negative effects on information processing performance. However, it has also been proven that adding random noise or a certain level of stochastic (random) variability to a nonlinear system can increase its performance or sensitivity to weak signals. Despite the studies on this concept, called stochastic resonance in computational neuroscience, this phenomenon is still among the topics that need detailed research, especially in machine learning. In this study, the effect of noise arising from the intrinsic dynamics of the neurons forming the network in a spiking neural network consisting of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons on the image classification success of the network is investigated. In the first part of this two-part study, a practical neural network model consisting of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons is proposed and the network is tested in a 4-class real classification task. It is observed that the network consisting of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons has a classification performance at least as successful as the artificial neural network. In the second part of the study, the neurons in the network are replaced with stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley neurons, which more realistically represent the biological neuron, and the classification performance of the network at different cell membrane sizes is examined. Findings reveal that a spiking network consisting of stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley neurons, in which intrinsic noise dynamics are incorporated into the system, shows maximum classification performance at an optimal intrinsic noise level. It is called this reflection observed in the classification performance of a spiking network, which is referred to as stochastic resonance in computational neuroscience, as stochastic classification resonance in this study. This study also highlights the importance of bridging the gap between biological neuroscience and artificial neural networks for a better understanding of neurological structure

Bishri Hafi Effect: How spirituality might stall off the addiction recovery

    No full text
This article introduces the Bishri Hafi Effect, a distinctive psycho-spiritual phenomenon that appears to hinder the recovery journey of individuals struggling with alcohol and substance addiction. This effect is characterized by the belief held by addicts that their recovery is contingent upon an external (supernatural) force, rather than their own agency, thereby creating a significant hurdle in their path to overcoming addiction. The phenomenon emerged as a byproduct of a larger study involving 10 individuals undergoing treatment for alcohol and substance addiction at various Green Crescent (Ye & scedil;ilay) Consultancy Center branches in Istanbul between 2019 and 2021. Employing phenomenological analysis, this effect was identified and examined within the broader context of the study. During spiritual counseling sessions that incorporates Islamic tradition, it became apparent that some individuals, when presented with the recovery story of Bishri Hafi-a key figure in Islamic tradition symbolizing alcohol addiction-tended to idealize his narrative, often to the point of overlooking their own personal progress. The story of Bishri Hafi triggered an outlook wherein recovery was anticipated as a miraculous event. This article aims to introduce and shed light on this unique phenomenon, highlighting its unexpected impact within the realm of spirituality in addiction treatment

Materyalizm üzerine yapılan bu mukayeseli çalışma, sırasıyla Guy de Maupassant'ın The Necklace ve O. Henry'nin The Gift of the Magi eserlerini ele almaktadır. This comparative study on materialism deals with The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant and The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry respectively. As a literary term, materialism focuses on how some changes in the economy and society affect people. In these stories, it is pointed out that the desires of the characters are highly directed by the communal conditions in which they live. Mathilde in The Necklace comes from a lower-class family and her ambitions to get a higher position led her to give more importance to material belongings rather than sincere relations. Similarly, Jim and Della in The Gift of the Magi suffer from poverty, and they instinctively feel obliged to sacrifice their precious belongings to purchase presents for each other. In other words, these stories harshly criticize the capitalist system and its effect on material possessions by signifying the importance of empathy and compassion for a happier world. In this respect, the purpose of this article is to show how materialism is represented as a false ideal that leads to individual sacrifice and profound irony by uncovering the deeper value of love and selflessness over material prosperity in the selected short stories

Enhancing Al2O3 composites: In situ synthesis and nanostructure transformation of ZIFs for mechanical and conductivity control

    No full text
Integrating nanocarbon materials into ceramic matrices offers potential improvements in mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In this study, in situ synthesis and transformation of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF8) into nanocarbon phases within an Al2O3 matrix were achieved using spark plasma sintering at 1500 degrees C and 50 MPa. A uniform dispersion of ZIF8-derived nanocarbons led to significant grain refinement and the formation of a conductive network. Increasing ZIF8 content reduced hardness (from 18.71 to 8.04 GPa) and fracture toughness (from 5.19 to 3.90 MPam1/2) due to higher porosity and softer carbon phases. However, electrical conductivity improved substantially, reaching 2500 S/m with 15 wt% ZIF8. Conversely, thermal conductivity decreased due to intensified phonon scattering and the finer-grained structure. These results demonstrate the dual functionality of ZIF8-derived nanocarbon in Al2O3 composites, balancing enhanced electrical performance with thermal management for advanced applications in electronics and energy systems.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK) [222M085]; Scientific Research Projects Commission of Eskisehir Technical University [24ADP093]This study was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK) under Grant No. 222M085. Arap Şiirinde Trablusgarp Savaşı'nın Yansıması ve İsmail Sabrî'nin “Harbu Trâblus” Adlı Kasidesinin Tahlili

    No full text
The wars that the Ottoman Empire engaged in with Western states in its last periods greatly affected the Arab world. Especially Arab poets, who were not insensitive to social and political issues, gave an important place to these wars of the Ottoman Empire in their divans. The war that Arab poets particularly emphasized among these conflicts was the Tripoli War between the Ottoman Empire and Italy. Generally, in the eyes of the poets, this war was accepted as a colonial attempt by the West to the Islamic world, and this caused these poets to absolutely support the Ottomans. Although Egyptian poet İsmail Sabri remained indifferent to the Ottoman rule throughout his poet career, he wrote poems about this war, both showing his reaction to Italy and declaring his support for the Ottoman Empire. In this study, the reflections of the Tripoli War in Arabic poetry were discussed and, in this context, İsmail Sabri’s qasida called “Harbu Trâblus” was evaluated. The mentioned qasida has been analyzed verse by verse, attempting to highlight the themes that the poet emphasizes throughout the qasida. The poet’s messages regarding the war, addressed to both the Western world and the Islamic community and his thoughts about the war, have been articulated. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

The results of the study are expected to contribute to the development of individuals' awareness about the use of social media and provide suggestions for increasing social awareness in this field

Climate-Driven Shifts in Wild Cherry (Prunus avium L.) Habitats in Türkiye: A Multi-Model Projection for Conservation Planning

    No full text
Climate change poses a serious threat to biodiversity, particularly for woody species with limited dispersal capacity such as Prunus avium L. (wild cherry). In this study, we assessed potential shifts in its suitable distribution range (SDR) across T & uuml;rkiye by applying an ensemble modeling framework that combined Generalized Additive Models (GAM), Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), and Random Forest (RF). We used updated occurrence data (including GBIF and EUFORGEN records) and 11 ecologically relevant bioclimatic variables under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. Model performance was validated using AUC (Area Under the ROC Curve) and TSS (True Skill Statistic) metrics. Results suggest that while 60-70% of current SDRs remain stable by 2100, approximately 10% may be lost, with 20-23% new expansions. Temperature seasonality (Bio4) and seasonal precipitation (Bio15) were consistently identified as dominant predictors across models. Notably, newly suitable habitats are expected to be spatially isolated, limiting natural colonization. Our findings highlight the necessity of proactive conservation planning, including assisted migration and drought-resistant genotype selection, to ensure long-term persistence of wild cherry under changing climates. These results offer actionable insights for adaptive forest management and biodiversity conservation in Mediterranean-type ecosystems
