Thermochronological and magnetic advances on faulting processes: An introduction

    No full text
Introduction to the volume drawing from contributions presented at the 2023 American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting and includes studies on the Tibetan Plateau, the Pyrenees, and seismogenic carbonate faults in Israel and Italy.International audienceThis special volume presents recent advances in the use of thermochronology and rock magnetism to advance our understanding of faulting processes, integrating insights from diverse tectonic settings. Thermochronology, particularly low-temperature systems such as (U-Th)/He, fission tracks and argon dating, constrains the timing of fault initiation, slip, and reactivation, revealing links between deformation, exhumation, and surface processes. Magnetic methods, including anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy of anhysteretic remanent magnetization, serve as sensitive, non-destructive tools to detect mineralogical transformations caused by frictional heating, chemical alteration, and strain localization. Together, these approaches capture the thermal, structural, and fluid-related evolution of fault zones at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The volume draws from contributions presented at the 2023 American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting and includes studies on the Tibetan Plateau, the Pyrenees, and seismogenic carbonate faults in Israel and Italy. These seven contributions highlight the integration of structural geology, geochronology, and rock physics in deciphering fault zone histories and dynamic weakening processes. Collectively, the volume demonstrates the growing importance of multidisciplinary approaches in assessing seismic hazards and reconstructing Earth's crustal deformation history

Climate Models Exaggerate the Enhanced Double‐ITCZ in the Warming Tropical Pacific Due To Preexisting Precipitation Bias

    No full text
International audienceAbstract Future greenhouse warming projections from the CMIP6 multi‐model ensemble indicate increased precipitation in the southeastern Pacific Ocean and a reduction in interhemispheric precipitation asymmetry, suggesting an enhanced double‐Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the tropical Pacific. However, these models exhibit a persistent annual‐mean double‐ITCZ bias in preindustrial and historical simulations, casting doubt on their projections. Indeed, models with the smallest preexisting double‐ITCZ bias—aside from a few outliers—typically show the least enhancement of the double‐ITCZ feature under global warming. To investigate this further, we use CESM2 and conduct flux‐adjusted simulations that nearly eliminate the precipitation bias in preindustrial experiments, followed by CO 2 ‐doubling simulations. Our bias‐reduced simulations show a much smaller reduction in the precipitation asymmetry index and only half the increase in rainfall in the southeastern Pacific compared to the original model. We conclude that climate models likely overestimate the enhanced double‐ITCZ feature under global warming due to the preexisting precipitation bias

Cerium occurs as cerium-phosphate clusters around bioapatite nanocrystals in deep-sea sediments

    No full text
International audienceDeep-sea mud is rich in rare-earth elements, primarily found in fluorapatite, a mineral deposit that forms over hundreds of thousands to millions of years through the accumulation of fish remains. After fish die, biogenic apatite captures rare earth elements from seawater on the seafloor and from pore waters during the diagenesis process. The conventional model for rare earth element enrichment suggests that they are incorporated into the bioapatite crystal structure through solid-state diffusion. However, our data reveal that cerium atoms are instead precipitated within an amorphous layer surrounding bioapatite nanocrystals, as shown by high-energy-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Computational simulations further support this finding, predicting that cerium atoms cluster on the surface of fluorapatite. These results suggest that the fluorapatite-water interface plays a crucial role in the enrichment of cerium, as well as other rare earth elements, in marine sediments

Located in the UNESCO Geopark of Haute Provence, the Duyes watershed is representative of the hydrodynamic processes of the Mediterranean peri-alpine mid-mountains with deformed sedimentary bedrock. The local archives record a major hydroclimatic event associated with ten days of heavy rainfalls affecting this valley in April 1774 with a large-scale landslide with several damages: sinking of arable land, catastrophic flooding, destruction of buildings and roads. The archives describe the events in the terms of the time: "continuous rainfall", "abundance of water from the torrents", "revolution of the earth", "openings and crevasses", etc. The documents also point out that these "strange inconceivable revolutions" were concomitantly associated with two earthquake tremors without stating if this was a cause or a consequence of the detachment of several millions tons of rock and mud masses. This event took place at the end of the Little Ice Age (LIA, 1350-1850) in the context of a densely populated rural world practicing traditional peasant polyculture in the form of mid-mountain extensive agropastoralism. The first part presents and comments the 1774 archives as an example of a geohistorian's work. The second part details the climatic and hydrogeomorphological contexts of the valley at the time based on field observations and current data, including morphometric mapping using the LIDAR digital terrain model (DTM) and torrential flood simulations. Extensive fieldworks and the expertise of the local population also form the backbone of this study. Current flood and landslide risks are briefly recalled, based on the climatology of the years 2022 to 2024, in particular in May 2023 when heavy rainfall caused gullying of dirt roads and landings at the foot of steep fields and pastures in many valley locations. This research aims to contribute to the geohistory of the environmental and human societies co-evolution, and more specifically on the interactions between hydrogeomorphological processes and the dynamics of anthropized agrofestry landscapes in Mediterranean mountain regions. It also stresses the value of practical training in “landscape reading”, following the pedagogical principle of 讀景 put forward by Professor Jiun-Chuan Lin in his magnum opus on applied geomorphology (地形學,2022).Situé dans le Géoparc UNESCO de Haute Provence, le bassin versant des Duyes est représentatif des processus hydrodynamiques des moyennes montagnes péri-alpines méditerranéennes dans un contexte géologique sédimentaire déformé.

The peculiar hard state behaviour of the black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613

    No full text
International audienceTracking the correlation between radio and X-ray luminosities during black hole X-ray binary outbursts is a key diagnostic of the coupling between accretion inflows (traced by X-rays) and relativistic jet outflows (traced by radio). We present the radio--X-ray correlation of the black hole low-mass X-ray binary Swift~J1727.8-1613 during its 2023--2024 outburst. Our observations span a broad dynamic range, covering \sim4 orders of magnitude in radio luminosity and \sim6.5 in X-ray luminosity. This source follows an unusually radio-quiet track, exhibiting significantly lower radio luminosities at a given X-ray luminosity than both the standard (radio-loud) track and most previously known radio-quiet systems. Across most of the considered distance range (D1.54.3D {\sim} 1.5--4.3 kpc), Swift~J1727.8-1613 appears to be the most radio-quiet black hole binary identified to date. For distances 4{\geq} 4 kpc, while Swift~J1727.8-1613 becomes comparable to one other extremely radio-quiet system, its peak X-ray luminosity (5×1038{\gtrsim} 5{\times}10^{38} erg/s) exceeds that of any previously reported hard-state black hole low-mass X-ray binary, emphasising the extremity of this outburst. Additionally, for the first time in a radio-quiet system, we identify the onset of X-ray spectral softening to coincide with a change in trajectory through the radio--X-ray plane. We assess several proposed explanations for radio-quiet behaviour in black hole systems in light of this dataset. As with other such sources, however, no single mechanism fully accounts for the observed properties, highlighting the importance of regular monitoring and the value of comprehensive (quasi-)simultaneous datasets

Semilinear impact monitoring: Partial-banana mapping: Search for impactors

    No full text
International audienceContext. Near-Earth asteroids that orbit in the vicinity of the Earth have regular close approaches with our planet, and some of the asteroids can even collide with it. Several methods exist to compute an impact probability (IP). They include linear methods that can promptly give an estimate, but only provide reliable results when the two-body formalism is not strongly perturbed. Nonlinear methods are more robust, but several thousand asteroid orbit clones have to be integrated for a reliable result.Aims. We developed a semilinear method that is reliable for IP computations and is fast enough. On one hand, it is robust and can handle perturbations from close encounters with planets, and on the other hand, it only requires the numerical integration of several orbits.Methods. We modified the partial-banana mapping (PBM) method (which we developed in earlier work), which uses a special curvilinear coordinate system to approximate the curved shape of the uncertainty region in physical 3D space. As in PBM, at the time of the possible collision, we determine the closest point to the Earth along the main axis of the uncertainty region. Based on this, we determine the initial condition in orbital space at the epoch of observations that leads to this point, integrate this orbit, and finally, compute the impact probability. The scheme can be iterated until the procedure converges. This approach allowed us to take gravitational perturbations into account.Results. The method was applied on 16 test cases and showed that virtual impactors were determined for 15 cases in the first run (without iterations). The computed impact probabilities agreed with the Monte Carlo results that were taken as reference, and they were more accurate than the results of linear methods for a similar computing time. The method worked even for the possible collision of (99942) Apophis in 2036 and successfully handled the close approach in 2029 (the Apophis orbit in the test was obtained from observations in 2004–2006). For one of the 16 cases, the collisional orbit was too far from the nominal orbit, and the impact probability was zero (which agrees with the Monte Carlo result), while the estimates from the linear methods for the impact probability were about 5%.Conclusions. The method we developed successfully fills in the gap between fast linear methods with a numerical integration of the nominal orbit alone, which are of limited usage for an almost pure two-body problem, and time-consuming nonlinear methods that sample the uncertainty region with a numerical integration of several thousand orbits

    No full text
