Local Responses in Contemporary Rural East Java, Indonesia
No full textSoftcover, 204 S.: 24,00 €Softcover, 17x24Until 1998 Indonesia was ruled by an authoritarian regime under which natural resources were exploited excessively so that resources governance was not appropriate anymore dealing with sustainability issue. Throughout the contemporary reform process with the decentralization of power via local and regional autonomy, natural resources are no longer dominated by direct state power only, but also managed by more actors at various levels of society. To employ the concepts of political ecology, new institutionalism, livelihood strategy and social sustainability, the research showed that spatial production of Upland Bromo have always been dominated by state actors in order to establish the control over land and people. In the other hand, the contemporary environmental changes, socially and physically, coincidentally lessen the availability and productivity of the resources, which in turn has affected the local people’s livelihoods, leading to the increasing struggle for resources. As a result, three kinds of new local resources governance, namely multi institutional relationship, bilateral institutional relationship and personal relationship based resources governance are formed. In association with the sustainability issue, these new local resources governance was not really sustainable signalling by negative value in indicators analysed; ability to develop sustainability, bridge the sustainability, and maintenance sustainability. This research gives clear explanation that transformation of regime from authoritarian to democratic in developing countries do not always has significance impact in promoting sustainable resources governance

Dabei werden die Einflüsse nicht nur der spezifischen markenstrafrechtlichen Besonderheiten eingehend durchleuchtet, sondern auch diejenigen der rechtstatsächlichen Aspekte des Markenstrafrechts wie etwa dessen Zugehörigkeit zur organisierten internationalen Wirtschaftskriminalität und die im Markenstrafrecht begegnenden Tätergruppen. Diese hochaktuelle Frage wird in „Wald und Krieg“ am Beispiel der deutschen Forstwirtschaft im Ersten Weltkrieg beantwortet. Die bisherige Forschung nahm an, dass Kriege den Waldbestand erheblich gefährden. Welche Mechanismen dazu führten, blieb jedoch unklar. Für den Ersten Weltkrieg kann die Frage nun beantwortet werden: Der Wald hätte eine Übernutzung verkraften können, sie wurde auch angestrebt, aber die Durchführung war unter Kriegsbedingungen unmöglich. Es fehlten Arbeitskräfte und Transportfahrzeuge. Trotzdem erfuhr die Waldbewirtschaftung tiefgreifende Änderungen. Einige der damaligen Neuerungen, wie das Sammeln von Gerbrinde und Ölfrüchten wurden nach Kriegsende rasch wieder aufgegeben, andere, wie die Mechanisierung durch Motorsägen und Zugmaschinen, prägen die Waldarbeit bis heute. Dabei änderten sich die Handlungsmaximen der Akteure kaum. Dem kriegswirtschaftlichen Ziel der Steigerung des Holzanfalls setzten die Förster die Wahrung der Nachhaltigkeit entgegen. So gegensätzlich die Ziele, so kontrastierend das naturräumliche Ergebnis der ‚Kriegsforstwirtschaft‘: Kahlschläge in verkehrsgünstigen Waldlagen und unberührte Natur im Hinterland

However, while the success of biobank research depends on the availability of a large number of samples and the consolidation of collections across country borders is very desirable from the perspective of researchers, the legal and ethical requirements for the procurement, storage and use of human tissue samples are rather heterogeneous across different countries. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive supranational regulation on human tissue and biobanking can be seen as posing a serious threat to transnational biomedical research. Against this background, it was one of the aims of the EU-funded Tiss.EU project (“Evaluation of Legislation and Related Guidelines on the Procurement, Storage and Transfer of Human Tissues and Cells in the European Union – an Evidence-Based Impact Analysis”) to analyse the ethical and legal regulation of human tissue and biobank research across the 27 European Member States plus Switzerland. The results of nine international workshops and three conferences are gathered in this volume. While the country reports evaluate the implementation of ethical and legal guidelines at a national level, point out their strengths and deficits, and, where required, create an evidence base for the revision of said legislation, the conference reports address more general ethical and legal issues in this field. The volume is completed by a final presentation of project’s results
Optimization of waveguide optics for lensless x-ray imaging
No full textSoftcover, 168 S.: 40,00 €Softcover, 17x24Lensless x-ray imaging is a promising method to determine the three-dimensional structure of material science and biological specimens at the nanoscale. The development of this technique is strongly related to the optimization of x-ray optics since the image formation and object reconstruction depend significantly on the properties of the illumination wave-field. Waveguide optics act as quasi-point sources and enable the spatial and coherent filtering of x-ray beams. Up to now, x-ray waveguides were severely limited in transmission and flux, restricting their use to high-contrast test structures with moderate resolution and long accumulation times. To overcome these limitations, a novel waveguide design with an optimized refractive index profile is presented which significantly minimizes the absorption of the modes propagating inside the waveguide. Experimental results along with simulations show that these two-component planar x-ray waveguides provide small beam cross-sections along with a high photon flux at the exit. By a serial arrangement of two waveguide slices an optimized illumination source has been developed for high-resolution microscopy, as demonstrated in proof-of-concept imaging experiments

A study on new approaches in coherent x-ray microscopy of biological specimens
No full textSoftcover, 212 S.: 44,00 €Softcover, 17x24The use of coherent x rays for microscopic imaging has seen a rapid and ongoing development within the past decade, driven by an increasing availability of highly brilliant and coherent sources worldwide. Accordingly, novel methods have been developed, which replace the microscope‘s objective lens by a numerical reconstruction scheme. The aim of the present work is to study how very recent experimental and algorithmic developments in the field can be implemented towards a highly sensitive and fully quantitative microscopy method for imaging of biological cells. To this end, different experimental approaches are studied, based on coherent far-field as well as near-field diffraction. At first, an application of the novel ptychographic imaging method to single biological cells is presented. In particular, it is demonstrated how weakly scattering biological specimens can be imaged with fully quantitative density contrast. Alongside, a sueccessful extension of the method towards soft x-ray energies is described.In the second part of the work it is shown how x-ray waveguides can be used as a point source for propagation-based microscopy of single cells in the hard x-ray regime. The specifically devised iterative reconstruction scheme allows for full quantitativity and high sensitivity and thus enables an application to single biological cells. The work contains a thorough introduction into the x-ray optical methods applied and aims at a useful and self-contained overview on aspects of signal and Fourier theory relevant for the used numerical propagation schemes
