How is the handling of contested “objects” from the German colonial era shaped in ethnological Museums in Germany and Cameroon? This ethnographic study connects, for the first time, approaches from ethnology, (international) law, (art) history and museology which constitute the multidisciplinary field of “return” to deal with this question. Two current return claims of things from Cameroon at ethnological museums in Munich and Berlin take centre stage: Tange/Schiffschnabel and Ngonnso’/Schalenträgerfigur. The reconstruction of the cultural biographies of the contested items documents their part as points of intersection in complex networks of relations and stakeholders from the 19th century to this day. These networks connect people and institutions in Cameroon and Germany and their diverse conceptions and claims on these things in a versatile manner. Return claims, according to the thesis, appear as a magnifying lens which discloses diverging conceptions of things and ontologies
Practicing Love of God in Medieval Jerusalem, Gaul and Saxony
Softcover, 17x24The collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of Christian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, religious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the historian Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony

Dealing with climate change on small islands: Towards effective and sustainable adaptation
Softcover, 17x24Small islands have received growing attention in the context of climate change. Rising sea-levels, intensifying storms, changing rainfall patterns and increasing temperatures force islanders to deal with and adapt to a changing climate. How do they respond to the challenge? What works, what doesn’t – and why? The present volume addresses these questions by exploring adaptation experiences in small islands across the world’s oceans from various perspectives and disciplines, including geography, anthropology, political science, psychology, and philosophy. The contributions to the volume focus on political and financial difficulties of climate change governance; highlight the importance of cultural values, local knowledge and perceptions in and for adaptation; and question to what extent mobility and migration constitute sustainable adaptation. Overall, the contributions highlight the diversity of island contexts, but also their specific challenges; they present valuable lessons for both adaptation
success and failure, and emphasise island resilience and agency in the face of climate change

The central task of tourism research is to advocate for sustainability. In order to do justice to the various components relating to tourism, such as aspects of the natural and cultural landscape as well as the economic, sociocultural and political situation, an integrative approach is necessary. The “landscape” is the foundation of tourism. Landscapes have their own value, a value that visitors and even locals are often not conscious of. “Landscape interpretation” and “heritage interpretation” attempt to remedy this defi cit by defi ning, vividly presenting and “staging” the essential aspects of a landscape. This makes it possible to enhance awareness of the value of a landscape and its need to be protected, thereby achieving a positive change in the behaviour of visitors. The present volume introduces various initiatives, which illustrate the importance of landscape interpretation for tourism research
The Born Family in Göttingen and Beyond
Revised and extended editionSoftcover, 17x242Gustav Victor Rudolf Born was born in Göttingen in 1921 as one of the three
children of Hedwig Born and the already famous physicist Max Born who
became Nobel laureate in Physics in 1954. On the grounds of the Born’s Jewish
origins and the open pacifism of Max Born, the National Socialists forced the
Born family to leave Germany in 1933, soon after the National Socialist Party
seized power. The family immigrated to Great Britain, first to Cambridge, later to
Edinburgh. The Born children spent the rest of their childhood and youth in Britain,
and Gustav Born obtained his medical degree from Edinburgh University, his
doctoral degree from the University of Oxford. During his long and distinguished
academic career, Born has held chairs of pharmacology at the Royal College of
Surgeons, at Cambridge University, and at King’s College in London. At the end
of his outstanding career and his invaluable contributions to knowledge of the
pathophysiology of the circulation, haemosthasis, thrombosis and atherogenesis,
he was Research Professor at the William Harvey Research Institute.
In this book he reflects on the life journey the Born family was forced to take.
The text stems from the conference “Göttingen and the development of the Natural
Sciences”, organized by the Georgia Augusta’s Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte
in November 2000. Gustav Born agreed to attend and follow the invitation to
present a keynote address on “The Born family in and out of Göttingen”, which was
held in the University’s sanctum sanctorum, the so-called Alte Aula. His address
was the highlight of the conference, attended by many from Göttingen’s academic
community and concluded with a long standing ovation.
In a personal conversation with Arnulf Quadt (professor for particle physics at
Göttingen University), briefly before his sad passing in April 2018, Gustav Born
encouraged to make the book on the story of his family available again. The
University of Göttingen is deeply honoured to follow Gustav Born’s suggestion
and present a commented reprint of the original keynote in 2002
Advances in Fibre Production Science in South American Camelids and other Fibre Animals
Softcover, 17x24Animal fibres from South American camelids and other fibre or wool bearing species provide important products for use by the human population. The contemporary context includes the competition with petrocarbon-based artificial fibres and concern about excessive persistence of these in the natural environment. Animal fibres present highly valuable characteristics for sustainable production and processing as they are both natural and renewable. On the other hand, their use is recognised to depend on availability of appropriate quality and quantity, the production of which is underpinned by a range of sciences and processes which support development to meet market requirements. This collection of papers combines international experience from South and North America, China and Europe. The focus lies on domestic South American camelids (alpacas, llamas) and also includes research on sheep and goats. It considers latest advances in sustainable development under climate change, breeding and genetics, reproduction and pathology, nutrition, meat and fibre production and fibre metrology. Publication of this book is supported by the Animal Fibre Working Group of the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP). ‘Advances in Fibre Production Science in South American Camelids and other Fibre Animals’ addresses issues of importance to scientists and animal breeders, textile processors and manufacturers, specialised governmental policy makers and students studying veterinary, animal and applied biological sciences.
Standards, Systems, Scholarship
Hardcover, 17x24Between 1500 and 1800, the rapid evolution of postal communication allowed ordinary men and women to scatter letters across Europe like never before. This exchange helped knit together what contemporaries called the ‘respublica litteraria’, a knowledge-based civil society, crucial to that era’s intellectual
breakthroughs, formative of many modern values and institutions, and a potential cornerstone of a transnational level of European identity.
Ironically, the exchange of letters which created this community also dispersed the documentation required to study it, posing enormous difficulties for historians of the subject ever since. To reassemble that scattered material and chart the history of that imagined community, we need a revolution in digital communications. Between 2014 and 2018, an EU networking grant assembled an interdisciplinary community of over 200 experts from 33 different countries and many different fields for four years of structured discussion. The aim was to envisage transnational digital infrastructure for facilitating the radically multilateral collaboration needed to reassemble this scattered documentation and to support a new generation of scholarly work and public dissemination. The framework emerging from those discussions – potentially applicable also to other forms of intellectual, cultural and economic exchange in other periods and regions – is documented in this book
