War literature, Christianity and personal historyThis article looks into aspects of the experience of the South African Border War during the seventies and the eighties. The very fact that there was a war was denied at some stages; often it was presented as a \u27battle between the powers of light and the powers of darkness ’. Almost always this war was underestimated in terms of its influence on the lives of common people. A vast corpus of ‘Border literature’ has developed and three of these narrative texts are used as the basis for a personal account of experiences as a National Service chaplain during the war. The relevant narrative texts are ’n Wêreld sonder grense (A world without borders) by Alexander Strachan, Wie de hel het jou vertel? (Who the hell told you?) and Swart sendelinge (Black missionaries) by Gawie Kellerman

Get PDFIn this article certain presuppositions of the innateness hypothesis of the TGG are judged by comparing it to aspects from the philosophy of Dooyeweerd. It is indicated that: (i) the TGG as well as Dooyeweerd postulates a radical structural distinction between man and animal but on different grounds; (ii) the intertwined unity of human nature is not fully recognised by the TGG; (iii) the complementary role o f man and reality in determining the structure of knowledge is acknowledged by both the TGG and Dooyeweerd. On these grounds it is stated that the TGG can not uncritically be accommodated into Dooyeweerd\u27s philosophical framework

Get PDFThe postmodernist educational approach: a philosophical discussion Several Christian philosophers and educationists have in recent years sounded warnings about the dangers inherent in postmodernist thinking about education. This investigation was launched to investigate whether postmodernists not only succeeded in attacking the modern pedagogical project of Enlightenment thinking but also the pedagogical project per se. It was found that Postmodernism succeeded in unmasking the tendency of Rationalism to absolutise the ontic structure of education as well as in deconstructing the rationalistic tendency to construct grand narratives and value systems, but that it failed to destroy the pedagogical project as such. Several postmodernist tenets are critiqued and discussed

Get PDFA comparison between Dutch and Afrikaner nationalism The development of Dutch nationalism during the nineteenth century was strongly influenced hy events in South Africa and reached its zenith during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. The beginnings of Afrikaner nationalism are to he found in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and were to a certain extent stimulated by Dutch nationalism. This article compares some features of both nationalisms, aiming especially to find similarities which might have been caused by the influence of one of these manifestations of nationalism on the other. It is concluded, however, that the similarities between these manifestations of nationalism are mainly caused by the characteristics of nationalism as a genera! phenomenon. In this article the role of Calvinist religion and philosophy in the development of Dutch and Afrikaner nationalism is briefly examined. It seems as if in both the Netherlands and South Africa influential Calvinist intellectuals with strong nationalist views p layed a role, but that they d id not have a major impact on the development of nationalism in either of the two countries. Both Dutch and the Afrikaner nationalists, however, regarded the Calvinist worldview and lifestyle of their forebears as essential features of Dutch and Afrikaner national identities

Get PDFThe change in the cultural image of the Ossewa-Brandwag, 1939-1940 In this article the cultural activities of the Ossewa-Brandwag (OB) are reviewed against the background of the expansion of Afrikaner nationalism. The founding enthusiasm of the OB was essentially an indication to supporters that the awakening of the nation as a result of the Voortrekker centenary fes tiv ities found their manifestation in the movement. The aim of the OB ira.v therefore defined as the country-wide unifying of all Afrikaners, driven hy patriotism to uphold the traditions of the nation towards the protection and promotion of the spiritual life of the nation. This founding aim and aspiration of the movement was influenced by various factors: the OB had, for example, been outspokenly republican and also developed as a political force since 4 September 1939. After this dale, the movement, having been stamped as a cultural organization since its foundation, began to display a militant protest character. As of September 1939 the self-imposed cultural aims o f the OB have to be viewed as a means to a political end

Get PDFStory as mythical questioning: The narrative art of Henriette GrovéHenriette Grove\u27s stories are mostly concerned with the nature and meaning of human experience, especially human suffering. In this article an effort is made to characterize these stories, indicating the relation between the stories and a way of thinking that is primarily concerned with metaphysical, mythical and religious issues. Texts like In die kamer was ’n kas and Die kêrel van die Pêrel and some short stories are examined to find indications of the underlying vision of man from which the stories generate. Special attention will be given to focalization in the stories, indicating the need to extend the meaning and use of the term so that textual as well as extratextual modal relations can be described. These relations may provide an indication of the vision of man which is favoured by the “abstract author" and which in this case seems to encompass much more than mere ideological thought patterns. Grové\u27s stories posit questions which, being mythical questions, can only be answered in a religious manner. The stories do not provide solutions to the problematic nature o f experience and suffering, but insist on asking the type of questions with which religion concerns itself

Get PDFThe sociology and the ethics of occupational rationalization Circumstances, both inside and outside an organization, at times compel the need for occupational rationalization. For the employees who experience the adversity of redundancy, occupational rationalization is defined as a dehumanizing labour practice, due to the fact that individuals are denied the opportunity to be employed. Jn this article, the Protestant work ethic is utilized in order to evaluate the moral aspects, justifiability, liability, dysfunctions and nonfunctions of occupational rationalization, as well as the situation of redundancy as experienced by rationalized employees. Furthermore, a sociological analysis, utilizing the perspectives of functionalism, critical conflict and interactionism, is given in order to shed light on the interpretation. This is done as the implementation of occupational rationalization necessarily raises both sociological and ethical questions. Sociologically, occupational rationalization has a distinct influence on all facets of an individual\u27s social existence and relationships. Ethically, occupational rationalization makes an appeal to morality in terms of the inherent notions of a Protestant work ethic in respect to an individual’s love for God, the self and for the neighbour. With regard to the evaluation of occupational rationalization as presented in this article, the aspects of a Protestant work ethic which are raised, and the sociological interpretation of occupational rationalization which is given, this discussion focuses on the ambivalence of rationalization, as well as the future of occupational practice. In conclusion, it is determined that although the practice of occupational rationalization is, at limes, a necessity, this process is experienced by the redundant employee as manifest-dysfunctional, nonfunctional, unethical and in many cases, unjustifiable

In an answer to the question of how one comes to grips with such a pluralism an aesthetic approach may be instrumental in bringing the biblical text closer to the present-day reader. Such an approach acknowledges an aesthetic distance between the text and its readers. Following Jau?s ?sthetische Erfahrung und literarische Hermeneutik literature is regarded as a communication process in which the author(s), text and readers have equal shares. The approach is illustrated by a reading of the Book of Esther, focusing on Esther\u27s behaviour in chapter 9 and the gaps implying divine action. Instead of a God in control of history, the reading opts for an openness and Gelassenheit towards a notion of holy that is incomprehensible and strange. The article argues against ignoring the human aspect in the reading process which turns Bible reading into an authoritarianism suppressing any imagination

Get PDFAspects of a Christian perspective on some facets of History as a discipline and its practice in a changing South Africa Within the framework and dynamics of a currently changing South Africa, not only History as a practised discipline hul historians too - especially Christian historians are increasingly criticised from various quarters and/or faced with totally new obstacles and questions. Although criticism in this sense constitutes nothing new perse, the f undamental character of changes sweeping the country (e.g. democratization, nation building, truth and reconciliation, societal restructuring) and the historio-political legacy of the recent past, re-accentuated the criticism that South African historiography has consistently proved to be subservient of a political ideology. The objectives of this article are to highlight some former historical trends and current tendencies in Christian perspectives of the past and to discuss the question of how Christian historians and Christian History teachers can interact in a responsible and careful way with their subject by avoiding misrepresenting the truth and of becoming (again?) the servants of just another ideology
