Religious paradoxes in Graham Greene’s novels
Get PDFGraham Greene\u27s work, especially his major novels, reveals his probing interest in religious matters. His writing indicates that throughout his career he has found himself involved in essential - and often paradoxical - questions concerning religious faith, particularly as these questions impinge on the twentieth-century mind. In this article some of Greene’s paradoxical views on religious matters are explored in a more universal and anti-institutional context than the strictly Roman Catholic one in which his work is usually examined As exemplars of Greene’s work in which religious paradoxes are central, Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory and Monsignor Quixote are discussed. This article underscores the fact that Greene has almost single-handedly redefined twentieth-century Roman Catholic notions on piety with his constant revelation that pious people often lack charity while salvation is possible for sinners. It also shows that Greene’s novels radically question the doctrines on morality espoused by conventional churches, thereby displaying his own religious sensitivity and courage

Get PDFThe in loco parentis position of the teacher implies that he/she is regarded as acting in the place of the parent. This principle is embedded in South African common law and in many respects confirmed by statutory law. In the South African legal context, it implies that the teacher is obliged to take care of the physical and mental safety of the pupil and has the right to maintain discipline. It is a legal instrument for bringing about order in the educative duties of teachers. A more philosophical line of reasoning, centring on sphere sovereignty, reveals why jurists tend to compare the duties of teachers with those of parents, but do not equate them with each other or regard these duties as synonymous

Get PDFOptions for education provision to minority groups in South AfricaThis article focuses on the educational rights o f minority groups. International trends in terms of the rights of minority groups have been identified regarding the right of unique educational provision, educational control and own education institutions. From an international perspective it can be deduced that South African minority groups can demand, without being discriminatory, the provision of own education which is to the advantage of the particular minority group as well as to the community at large. Minority groups can also request substantial involvement in educational control, which implies a system of decentralized educational control. These groups can also insist on own education institutions. It is indicated that if minority groups are not provided with the above-mentioned rights they can rightfully complain of unfair discrimination

Get PDFThe effect of a custody dispute on preschool childrenThe motivation for the research on which this article is based highlights the consequences of the placement of children after the divorce of their parents and in instances in which a custody dispute erupts. The functions and purpose of the family advocate in this process are also taken into consideration. The aim of this article was to evaluate children with respect to three variables, namely, 1) positive selfesteem, 2) the loyalty conflict between biological parents and 3) depression. These evaluations were undertaken within three groups, namely, 1) children in a nuclear family, 2) children in a single-parent family where divorce had occurred and 3) children in a family where a custody dispute had taken place. A nonexperimental method of research was used. To test the specific hypotheses the following test instruments were used: 1) Bene-Anthony family relations 2) Draw a Person Test (D.A.P.) and 3) Draw a Family Test (D.A.F.). The conclusions arrived at indicate firstly, that children in nuclear families do have a higher self-esteem than children from single-parent divorced families, but the latter, in turn, do not have a higher self-esteem than those from families undergoing a custody dispute. Furthermore, children from nuclear families do not experience less loyalty conflict than children from single-parent divorced families, but the latter experience less loyalty conflict than those from families undergoing a custody dispute. Finally, children from nuclear families suffer less from depression than children from single-parent divorcedfamilies, but the latter do not experience less depression than those from families exposed to a custody dispute. As the research on which this article is based merely has an exploratory nature, only general trends can be deduced from the results. Further studies will require larger and better controlled samples

The key variable of traffic safety is to be found in principled education emphasizing religious and life values. A child need to learn that life, also his/her own, is sacred to God and must be safeguarded by following traffic safety rules and regulations. Since traffic safety is dependent on, inter alia, attitudes and religious-cultural values, children must be taught positive attitudes at home and at school. This point o f departure implies that teachers need to have positive attitudes towards Traffic Safety Education, which, in turn, implies Traffic Safety Education as a prerequisite fo r teacher education

Get PDFDialectical reasoning in Jacques Ellul\u27s critique of "autonomous\u27’ technologyJacques Ellul (1912-1994) is one of the most influential twentieth-century philosophers of technology. His critique of the “technological system ", characterized by him as an autonomous power which is on the brink of developing out of control, is original and all-encompassing Ellul maintains that the most important features of technology are that technology is a result of sin, that it has given rise to a technological system which constitutes an "autonomous" force with the attainment of efficiency as the basis of its ethics, and that it has enslaved man. In order to counter the advance of the system, Ellul advocates a Christian form o f non-violent anarchy. This form of resistance is designed to "desacralize" the technological system and is based on Ellul’s exegesis of certain Biblical passages. It is argued that Ellul tends to absolutize human freedom as well as the dialectical tension between man and technology, which he considers a precondition for human freedom. By contrasting Ellul\u27s views with the Reformational position, it is shown that Ellul\u27s conception of technology is inadequate, leading to an erroneous view of man\u27s relation to technology and the meaning of technology
Understanding the concept of land in the Old and New Testament: The importance of a personal factor
Get PDFSince the early times of the calling of the patriarch Abraham, the land of Israel had a very important place in the Old Testament. Some say that the concept of land was “Christified” in the New Testament era and has since lost its importance. Others regard this approach as spiritualising and stress the sociological importance of the concept of land in the Old and New Testament. Some interpreters even advocate a theology of ecology. This article points out the important place of the personal factor with regard to land in the Old Testament and attempts to indicate how this line of thought also pervades the New Testament. It is only when this factor is borne in mind, that the theologian and preacher can see the different aspects of the concept of land in their true relation to each other
