Get PDFDoes more complexity imply more science?Reflection on the article by X allows for appreciative as well as critical remarks. The main gist of the re(inter)action may be formulated as follows: yes, science is a complex phenomenon and as such may follow the behaviour of complex systems in general. But in what way does the complexity of science distinguish it from other equally complex human activities? The underlying problem is one of setting boundaries. We have reservations that the boundaries of science may in one sense be defined too narrowly, and in another sense again be made too encompassing. By making complexity the identifying characteristic of science, we lose sight of other important aspects contributing to the identity of science such as the presence of appropriate method, and a critical/responsible thought altitude. In that sense it is too narrow a definition of science. On the other hand science as (a selforganising rational) complex system is m danger of being regarded as autonomous, thereby stretching its boundaries too far. With regard to that we emphasize that science is continually m interaction with intra- and extra-scientific "systems”. Furthermore, science does not exist solely for its own sake. Guided by the principles of caritas and sapientia, it ought to further the establishment of shalom in society

When deviance becomes sin
Get PDFIn this article a brief exposition is given o f what sin and deviance entail. This perspective is approached in terms of what is called the logovision premise. This premise essentially maintains that human perception of reality is primarily mediated through words and that only God\u27s words allow us to see reality as it truly is. Thus we are enabled to respond appropriately to reality - especially evaluative reality. By then applying God’s words to the issues involved in the study of deviance, more clarity is hopefully achieved. This is done by discussing the respective characteristics of sin and deviance and by briefly exploring the relationship between these two phenomena. Finally some of the implications for the study o f social deviance are discussed

Management as a science is not unfamiliar in the church, but it has merely been neglected. The meaning of the term “church" as used in both the Old Testament and the New Testament is examined. Management within the church will have to uphold the nature, being, character, purpose and structure of the congregation according to the Word of God. Management will have to be a process by which believers continuously engage in congregational activities, try to use human and other resources as efficiently as possible, in order to fulfil all the ministry needs o f the congregation and to achieve specific goals. To be able to achieve this, the basic management tasks of planning, organising, activating and controlling have to be undertaken. The church should apply management principles to enable the church to become what it should be according to the will/intention of God

This principle has already attained the character of an idolatrous conviction. The power of technology has started to change science via technicism into a controlling instrument. In this sense the potential of technology is much overrated. In this discussion attention will be paid to the meaning of technology and the power it manifests nowadays, with specific attention to the technology of agriculture. Attention is not only paid to the dark side of technology (namely the power of technology), but also to a liberating perspective on technology according to some selected normative principles. Finally, these principles will be applied to a few agricultural case studies, among others also to a South African example
