The contrafactum-practice which utilises secular melodies and/or texts as sources in the creation of sacred hymns, is an age-old tradition. This practice generated amongst others a few Protestant hymns (particularly in the German Reformed context), which are viewed today as important hymns in the hymn corpus. One example would be the hymn for lent, “Herzlich tut mich verlangen”.In several historic sources the use of secular melodies in church hymns is motivated: the fact that the melodies are already well-known amongst the congregation would make it easy to learn the new texts. Sources also confirm that this practice makes the songs more accessible for the youth. This article explores the development of selected hymns from the Liedboek van die Kerk (2001) (“Afrikaans Hymn book of the Church”) to determine their secular roots and describe how they developed into sacred hymns. It is pointed out that the utilisation of the melodies as settings for different sacred texts, illustrates their quality and flexibility and is instrumental in their acceptance as hymn tunes. It is also argued that historic distance between the secular source and the church hymn contributes to the weakening of the original secular association. The ongoing debate on the secular versus the sacred is also touched upon, and finally the renewed interest in contrafacta in the late 20th and early 21st century is discussed.https://doi.org/10.19108/KOERS.81.2.225

AbstractThis article covers part of a research project aimed at the development of an intervention for use in group work with children in their late middle childhood who are victims of bullying behaviour. In the second phase of the intervention research, namely the collection and synthesis of data, the opinions of professional persons were sought in a focus group regarding the essence of the problem as well as to identify functional elements that needed to be included in the intervention. In order to refine the intervention prototype, it was important for the voices of the victims of bullying participants to be heard about their experience and management of bullying behaviour, and to discuss alternative ways of managing bullying. The opinions of the parents of victims of bullying participants, regarding their children’s inclusion in the intervention prototype, are also included as part of the early development and pre-test phase data. Data collection is supplemented by comprehensive literature research. Four themes were identified and are discussed in this article.Key terms: Bullying behaviour, Bio-ecological perspective, Circle of Hope model, fundamental human needs.

Dit is ook interessant dat heelwat artikels uit die veld van opvoedkunde tans vir  publikasie aangebied word, en dit dui op die wye belangstelling in opvoedkunde op alle vlakke, wat tans in Suid-Afrika in die brandpunt is.……………………………………….Preface In die Afrikaans foreword to this issue of Koers mention is made of a strongly-worded letter of objection to the fact that the journal has become a largely English-language journal, and the names of Stoker and Totius are invoked in terms of their probable response to what is considered to be an outrage. The fact that the journal has evolved since the mid-thirties from being an explicit and exclusive Bulletin for Christian scholarship to a more open electronic platform for inter-disciplinary research and engagement, with the requirement for authors to display a stance in terms of their worldview (allowing for justified differences in opinion) has, to my mind, led to scholars increasingly wanting to have a wider audience. Koers is an accredited journal, and therefore an article published in the journal qualifies for subsidy, and also adds to the publications list of an author. It is, therefore, inevitable that English would be the preferred language of publication, although there are still articles submitted in Afrikaans with an English abstract (the remark in the letter, as quoted in the Afrikaans foreword, about the poor quality of Afrikaans translations of abstracts is quite simply not true – abstracts, like articles, are language-edited by professional language practitioners, and not done via Google where the author does not provide an Afrikaans abstract). There are also incentives for academics to publish in Afrikaans. There has been an increase in the number of articles dealing with educational issues, and this is an indication that topical issues are debated in the journal, especially where education is one of the most vexing and worrying issues in South Africa at present.Koers will continue to publish articles of a high standard, peer-reviewed and recommended, and help academics to engage in healthy debate about issues of the day.https://doi.org/10.19108/KOERS.81.1.226

Beginning with Property? Hegel and Unfolding Freedom in a South African Academic Context

This article explores the ongoing question of academic freedom within the South African university system and extends this issue into a foundational inquiry of our understanding of freedom in society as a whole. The article employs Hegel’s concept of freedom as its baseline, gives a brief description of how Hegel constructs his concept, and ultimately critiques this concept on the grounds that, by making property the first embodiment of freedom (and subsequently, the first embodiment of selfhood) Hegel’s concept of freedom relies too much upon self-interest in its self-determination. This critique is furthered by highlighting ways in which this concept problematizes the university’s role within society and, by extension, the overall concept of freedom within society. It concludes by encouraging future discussions that unfold the concept of freedom beyond a mutually self-interested desire for autonomy. https://doi.org/10.19108/KOERS.81.3.227

Die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, kerkorde en onderwys

Abstract: The Dutch Reformed Church, church order, and education. From the first church order of the General Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church in 1962, it has stipulations for the church and education. In this regard, the Dutch Reformed Church is unique among reformed churches. The wording of this article changed over the years, but the main content remained the same. The Dutch Reformed Church supports Christian education as a church but also recognizes the ability of education authorities to finalise education standards and programmes. In 1962 the order of the Dutch Reformed Church on education also stated that the church will work on the Protestant character of the Afrikaner people. From 1990 onwards these words were omitted. The church nevertheless feels that education will always be in a certain culture. In synodical resolutions in recent times the Dutch Reformed Church recognizes the calling of the South African state to subsidize all education meeting certain purely educational standards.

Environmental stewardship as a dimension of a Christian stewardship ethic: views of seminary students, lecturers and ministers

It is not uncommon to find that Christians are blamed for contributing to the destruction of the environment – a view that derives from the Biblical precept that ‘man was given dominion over the earth’ (cf Gen. 1:28). The current state of the environment indicates that humankind has indeed ravaged the earth, but it could be argued that this has occurred through greed, covetousness, materialism, competitiveness and short-sightedness which are specific human traits in conflict with God and Christianity. Furthermore, the true significance of the ‘dominion over the earth’ tenet is invariably overlooked. Having dominion over the earth means that man has the responsibility of representing God on earth; of ruling as His co-regents or, put differently, acting as His stewards or custodians of His creation. It is argued that environmental stewardship is a dimension of the Christian stewardship ethic that is inherent in the Christian faith. This article reports on research undertaken with ministers, lecturers and students of the United Reformed Church in Southern Africa who were asked to provide their views on Christian stewardship as a requisite component of their role as leaders and aspirant leaders in the Church. Perspectives on environmental stewardship as a dimension of the Christian stewardship ethic were also probed. The research showed that respondents were unanimous in their understanding that Christian stewardship is Biblically founded and mandated and that environmental stewardship is part of that ethic. However, environmental stewardship is inadequately provided for in Church teaching and seminary training programmes. This article examines respondents’ views on the above and puts forward ways in which environmental stewardship could be enhanced and promoted.https://doi.org/10.19108/KOERS.81.2.226

A missional study of the use of social media (Facebook) by some Ghanaian Pentecostal Pastors

Social media as a new phenomenon has become a tool used by many televangelists and pastors all over the world.  It is against this background that this research sought to explore the Facebook activities of some Ghanaian Pentecostal pastors from a missional perspective. The article discusses the concept of social media, Facebook and its potential for mission purposes, the Facebook phenomenon among Ghanaians and how Ghanaian Pentecostal Pastors are using Facebook for missional purposes.  The study revealed that Ghanaian pastors are followed by people from different religious and societal backgrounds. It has also offered the pastors and their congregations the opportunity to form relationships with a wide and diverse range of people without being bound by geographical space.https://doi.org/10.19108/KOERS.81.2.225
