Studentų lituanistų mokslinė konferencija – tiltas, jungiantis lituanistus
Conceived by Lithuanian language students at Vilnius University’s Faculty of Philology and organised since 2023 in collaboration with Kaunas University, the student conference General Rehearsal has already become a tradition, bringing together young researchers from two university faculties for the fifth year in a row and providing an opportunity to share scientific insights and discoveries and rehearse the defence of their work. The aim of the scientific conference is to provide students with an opportunity to present their scientific or research work, develop the competencies of future specialists in the humanities, and discuss the importance of philology in the 21st century

This monograph is of significant interest and value within the contemporary cultural field, offering a comprehensive exploration of the subject matter and providing a foundation for further research. The decision to present the text of the book in two languages – Lithuanian and Polish – is highly commendable as it expands the circle of potential readers. The significance of intertwining languages and cultures in Lithuania during that period is shown. The opportunity is provided to consider the phenomenon of noble culture, its diversity and change in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. In the context of the panorama of Samogitia and Poland\u27s social life, the correspondence between the Lithuanian artist Nikodem Erazm Iwanowski and the Polish writers Eliza Orzeszkowa and Maria Konopnicka is presented.Židonis, Giedrius, Niewulis-Grablunas, Jowita, 2024. Food Tropes in the Portrayal of Saleem Sinai in Rushdie’s Novel “Midnight’s Children”
The article analyses the subversion of the meanings attributed to food tropes in Rushdie’s novel Midnight’s Children. The research is carried out within the theoretical framework of Postethnic Narrative Criticism, which postulates that literature should not be perceived as an accurate representation of reality outside the world of fiction or interpreted as such; as a result, historical and political contexts should not become key to understanding the narrative. The article analyses the key connotations of the tropes emerging in the description of Saleem Sinai, the protagonist of the novel Midnight’s Children. The portrayal of Saleem highlights the fusion of private and public realities of life, subverting established gender – specific connotations related to the tropes of food. A traditional model of the family undergoes major challenges in the novel, which is symbolised by an increase in the importance of liquid-related food imagery associated with the problem of alienation from the family and an emerging possibility to establish long-term relationships outside it. Diverse religious, political and economic contexts attributed to food tropes in the novel broaden the scope of traditional meanings of food tropes
Language and Structure of a Business Email in the Conditions of Russian, Polish and English-language Communication
This article offers a comparative analysis of Polish, Russian and English-language business emails. The results of the research displayed both similarities and differences in linguistic realisation of this genre of business communication. The greatest similarities were observed in those elements of an electronic letter, which are typical only for this particular form of correspondence. The differences are mainly in using para-linguistic devices, such as punctuation, discoursive-stylistic devices in writing upper- and lower-case letters, and in the linguo-cultural dependence in the implementation of such elements as the greeting and the closing formula. Polish and Russian emails are distinguished by a high degree of formality and a tendency to maintain an official tone compared to English-language texts of this genre, in which one can notice a greater directness and avoidance of literature, which is particularly characteristic of Polish courtesy formulas.
Similarities detected in the comparative study may be due to adherence to netiquette, while differences are triggered by different norms in the etiquette of each language. This means that despite the universality of netiquette norms and the dominance of English in international correspondence, email still retains linguo-cultural specificity due to differences in ethnic worldviews and the officialdom of Slavic culture in relation to the openness of Euro-American civilisation
„Koalicja 15 października” vs. „Koalicja 13 grudnia”. Kolonizacja czasu z perspektywy lingwistycznej
The subject of the study is the problem of one of the manifestations of human control over time, colonisation. It has two dimensions: the first is colonisation using time, a manifestation of which is creating a common space for establishing temporal interactions (e.g., globalisation of clock time), the second is colonisation of time understood as social interference in time (individual and communitarian). Time colonisation is, among other things, a tool for the struggle for power by imposing a specific valuation on temporal units important for a particular community. The issue of linguistic actions aimed at colonising the past, present, and future by contemporary Polish politicians is the subject of the analysis undertaken. An example subject to observation is the use of two names of the governing coalition after the elections to the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland held on October 15, 2023 (i.e. Coalition of October 15 and Coalition of December 13).Artykuł podejmuje problem jednego z ważniejszych przejawów sprawowania przez człowieka kontroli nad czasem, czyli kolonizacji rozpatrywanej w wymiarze temporalnym. Koalicja 15 października i Koalicja 13 grudnia)
Lithuanian Deaf and Hard of Hearing Viewers’ Preferences for Sound and Music Indications in Subtitles
In a world where audiovisual media plays a central role in communication, information, and entertainment, ensuring accessibility for all viewers, including deaf or hard-of-hearing, is essential. For these audiences, subtitles are not only a means of following dialogue but also a crucial tool for experiencing sound and music, which are often key to the narrative of media content. The aim of the study is to explore and identify effective strategies for subtitling sounds and music in audiovisual media that meet the preferences and needs of the Lithuanian deaf and hard-of-hearing audience. The empirical research approach adopted for this investigation is based on semi-structured interviews with the deaf and hard-of-hearing participants and qualitative data analysis. The results reveal that the target audience prefers strategies that incorporate minimal use of colour and mixed positioning for both sound and music indication, specifically, a sound source indicated in the brackets at the centre bottom of the screen, the genre and/or the instrument represented by a note symbol at the bottom of the screen, and song lyrics transcribed verbatim and marked with the note symbol
Deconstructing Textual Reality: rhizomatic writing as a disposition of Postmodern literary reflection
The article draws on a Deleuzoguattarian view of the rhizome to examine literary connections within postmodern novels as multiple, non-linear, and non-hierarchical structures. Two symptomatic texts – Alexandar Hemonʼs The Lazarus Project (2008) and Markus Zusak’s Bridge of Clay (2018) – have been explored through a rhizomatic reading to illustrate how these novels embody the principles of the rhizome as a disposition of postmodern thinking. The stories demonstrate a distinctive form of rhizomatic writing characterised by fragmentation, the imitation of chaotic composition, the blending of various genre elements, and the inclusion of different types of art (intermediality). Moreover, the article focuses on the rhizomatic transformations of time that shape the literary landscape within the novels, addressing concepts of the pre-past, past, present, and future via the past. A rhizomatic way of creating fiction texts actualises the idea of interdisciplinarity as the topical project in the humanities. By employing the concept of the rhizome, the article engages with the deconstructive potential of postmodern literature and the dispositional mode of its representation
