Ammonia agricultural emissions over Europe as seen by IASI and impact on PM2.5 concentrations

    No full text
Ammonia (NH3), whose main source is agriculture, is an important gaseous precursor of atmospheric particulatematter (PM). However, NH3 is the most poorly understood pollutant regulated by EU directives for air quality, asflux quantification is highly uncertain and measurement of this compound at the surface of the earth is difficult. Here, we derived daily European ammonia emissions using NH3 total columns from the Infrared AtmosphericSounding Interferometer (IASI) onboard Metop-A, at a relatively high spatial resolution (grid-cell of 0.5x0.5) for the two years 2010 and 2011. This update of NH3, in magnitude with a relatively high spatio-temporalvariability, allows for a better comparison with independent PM2.5 measurements. It shows a different seasonalcycle in 2011 with a strong peak in March 2011, rather than in April in the EMEP prior inventory. It also reveals apeak in August 2011, not described in the EMEP inventory. This preliminary study suggests that there are good promises for better quantifying NH3 emissions by at-mospheric inversions, and particularly with the the 4D Bayesian variational inverse system PYVAR-CHIMERE-based on the adjoint model of CHIMERE- being adapted to NH3</sub

STAMS : New tools for monitoring flooded and nonflooded mine shaft

International audienceIn European coalmines, there are many unequipped, abandoned shafts (in Poland, Germany, France, Spain, UK and other countries) in which the long term stability is a cause of concern. The need for continuous assessment and monitoring of the stability of abandoned shafts present a real challenge particularly for deep shafts. The European STAMS research project (Long term STability Assessment and Monitoring of flooded Shafts), subsidized by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel programme (RFCS), is addressing this issue. The objective of the STAMS project is to implement Periodic Inspection Modules, and to design permanently installed monitoring systems, to achieve periodic and long term continuous monitoring and condition assessment of flooded mine shafts. The project proposes solutions to monitor and to assess the stability and the conditions of flooded shafts, including the non flooded portions of partially flooded shafts, for long periods of time. The Multi functional Monitoring Module is able to make periodic measurements in order to assess the stability of a flooded shaft. The Ultrasonic Inspection Module allows the detection of lining deformations with high precision between periodic inspections of shafts. In addition to monitoring, a modelling approach has been developed to assess the long term stability of shafts during and after flooding by coupling the hydro mechanical behaviour with the chemical reactions which occur between the mine water and the shaft lining components. A database of the flooded shafts has been established. Laboratory and trials tests are carried out by the partners of the project to check the tools and to test them under real conditions. This paper presents and describes the developed modules and the first obtained results

Vers une utilisation de liquides ioniques basés sur le cation pyrrolidinium pour sécuriser les batteries au lithium-ion ?

International audienceA comprehensive insight into the thermal hazard and combustion behaviour in fire conditions of a series of pyrrolidinium based ionic liquids (ILs) associated with a fluorine-containing anion targeted for energy storage applications is provided. The work has been carried out in collaboration with the German institute HUI. Results constitute a solid database for sustainable use of these alternative solvents to conventional organic carbonate to build up safer electrolytes for lithium and sodium batteries, integrating tradeoff between safety and functionality in terms of conductivity and viscosity of pyrrolidinium based ILs. Safety advantages are clearly rated with their bias according to changes in alkyl chain length, anion used and use or an ether function.

Inventory of services for nanosafety assessment and management based on competences, equipment and infrastructure

    No full text
International audienceEC4SafeNano is a 2016-2019 Coordination and Support Action, funded by the European Commission (Grant Agreement No 723623), coordinated by INERIS, and operated together by major European human health and environmental risk institutes with the support of associated partners, gathering stakeholders in the field of Nanotechnologies (regulators, industry, civil society, NGOs, service providers etc.). EC4SafeNano aims to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge on hazard and risk, and ‘fit-for-purpose’ risk management tools and strategies. The main objective of EC4SafeNano will be to develop and promote a harmonized vision of expertise and services in risk assessment and management, to enable the safe development and commercialization of nanotechnology and develop a sustainable structure to deliver these services. In this respect, two work packages were dedicated to gathering information on stakeholder needs and available services, by means of an online survey. Information was collected on the ability to provide technical services for testing and measuring, and/or to perform consultancy and desk top studies. For these services, detailed information on available technical equipment, software tools, methods used and application fields was requested. Alongside specific technical details, the service providers were asked to give a general overview of their current and future offers for nanosafety services by scoring a matrix table. The online survey resulted into 82 responses from 22 countries, including 2 non-European countries. An overview of current types of services demonstrated that testing and measuring and consultancy studies represented the majority of the offered services (each >20% of total), followed by training (12%). Across all the types of services, physicochemical characterization (12.5%), emission studies (6.8%), fate (5.1%), human health hazard studies (5.7%), occupational exposure assessment (8.8%), occupational risk assessment (5.2%), occupational risk management (5.5 %) and risk prevention (5.7%) were the main application fields for nanosafety. The information from service providers will be compared to the inventory of stakeholder needs, as part of a fit and gap analysis in another work package, and provide the basis for a catalogue of services to be offered by the EC4Safenano Centre. We will present the set-up of the survey to create an inventory of the competences and infrastructure of service suppliers, as well as the obtained results
