The article is a speculation on whether the category of women’s writing continues to be applicable and/or indeed operative. It is argued that the effectiveness of women’s writing lies in identifiable trends, mutual influences and its particular heritage. A brief historical outline of women’s writing and criticism defines feminist literature as articulated by feminist criticism, whereas women’s writing is seen as a broad field of literary studies hardly restricted by any framework of interpretations. Women’s writing is said to be a part of and active participant in the literary process as a whole, and as such offers particular explorations in literature that have been overlooked, ventures into new ways of treating common topics, notably identity. Through the analysis of examples from contemporary French and British women’s prose, the article claims that although complex and ambiguous, the category of women’s writing remains a valuable lens through which to look at literary narratives written by women

Be to, skiriamas dėmesys angelo temai, nagrinėjamos poeto likimo ir angelo siužetinės linijos gretinimo pagrindu

Intertekstinis Margaretos Atwood romano Tarnaitės pasakojimas skaitymas

Since its publication in 1985, Margaret Atwood’s dystopia The Handmaid’s Tale has prominently secured its place among the most widely read novels of Canadian literature. The present article offers a reading of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale as a narrative built on intertextual relationships with other texts, which are directly or implicitly referred to in the novel. This analysis of the novel emphasizes reading as a dynamic semiotic process and employs Gérard Genette’s notion of transtextuality to look into the narrative’s semantic field from the perspective of its paratextual, intertextual and metatextualrelationships. While focusing on the Bible as the major intertext that structures the semantic space of Atwood’s narrative, this intertextual reading of The Handmaid’s Tale also looks at the ways in which the biblical context of Atwood’s novel correlates with the paratexts of Jonathan Swift’s essay A Modest Proposal and sufi philosophy to delineate the dominant strategies of the reading and interpreting of Atwood’s text. Finally, the article analyzes the metatextual level of Atwood’s novel and points out the ways in which the writer ironizes the intertextual nature of her own text and fictionalizes its intertexts, thereby suggesting the impossibility of narrative and interpretative closure

Teatras popieriaus lape: Egono Schiele’s ekspresionistiniai autoportretai

Phaedrus’ speech in Plato’s Symposium was often ignored by Platonic scholars as unphilosophical, and has been analysed mostly in its rhetorical aspects. This narrowed the intentions of the dialogue down to theoretical speculations, neglecting a practical problem – namely, which values of the Greek polis remained relevant in the epoch of radical cultural transformation through which Plato lived. The detailed analysis of Phaedrus’ speech reveals some of its aspects that remained latent until now, establishing that the system of concepts of ‘shame’ and ‘aspiration to glory’ derives from the traditional system of values of Greek military community, and thus has a concrete historical and social content. It was precisely Socrates and later Plato who embarked on the revision of the Greek concept of ‘shame’ (as Plato’s Apology attests). The paper employs additional sources that help to recreate the historical context of the speech and to inscribe it into its authentic Sitz im Leben.Furthermore, Lysias’ speech against Alcibiades is linked with Phaedrus’ speech and the whole context of the Symposium
