Patriotism, Cosmopolitanism, Consumer Ethnocentrism and Purchase Behavior in Kazakhstan

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of consumer ethnocentrism and its antecedents - patriotism and cosmopolitanism on consumer domestic and foreign buying behavior in the emerging economy of Kazakhstan. This country poses an interesting question as to how the effects of attitudes and purchase behavior differ in the once controlled regime after receiving independence from a dominant regime. These different attitudes likely affect international integration of Kazakhstan into the global economy. As expected, consumer ethnocentrism leads to high consumption of domestically produced goods and to the lower level of consumption of imported products. Patriotism has a significant positive effect and cosmopolitanism has a significant negative effect on ethnocentric attitudes of consumers in the country studied. The findings of the present study suggest that Kazakhstan seems to have a strong negative link of cosmopolitanism on ethnocentric attitudes and overall, this country seems to have the promise of becoming integrated into the global economy. Managerial implications of the findings are considered and directions for the future research are identified

Perception of Country of Brand Origin and Country of Product Manufacturing Among Lithuanians and Emigrants From Lithuania

Though the issue of product country of origin has been researched by numerous researchers, due to globalization, currently consumers have more problems perceiving the country of origin than ever before. This brings marketing specialists back to the discussion of the topic once again, with emphasis on a distinction between the country of manufacturing origin and the country of brand origin. The impact of country of manufacturing and country of brand image varies from country to country under the influence of numerous impact factors, often summarized within a culture or subcultures. One type of such subcultures could be formed by immigrants, whose perceptions might include aspects of their home country combined with those of the host country. The main purpose of this paper was to evaluate the attitudes of Lithuanians who live in Lithuania (as a country of an emerging economy) and those of emigrants living in selected countries (Ireland, the United Kingdom and Finland) with regard to the importance of country of origin. Three brands were selected for the research – Panasonic, LG and BEKO, and three different cases were presented to the respondents. First, both the brand name (Panasonic) and the manufacturing country (the United Kingdom) were associated with a developed country. In the second case, country of brand origin (LG) was identified as a developed country while country of manufacture represented an emerging economy (Poland). Finally, an emerging economy of the country of brand origin (BEKO) and an emerging economy of the country of manufacturing (Turkey) were dealt with.Findings provide evidence that, in general, more developed countries had a better image as countries – manufacturers of TV sets than less developed countries (emerging economies). Analysis of opinions about country of brand origin revealed that brands from developed countries were evaluated better than those from emerging economies. In addition, analysis showed that respondents who live in an emerging economy have more positive attitude towards the surveyed brands compared with Lithuanian emigrants to developed countries. Finally, strong correlation was found between the evaluation of a brand and evaluation of the country of brand origin, while there was no correlation between evaluation of a brand and evaluation of country of manufacturing

Which Market Entry and Product Line Strategies Ought Organisations to Adopt for Emerging Economies?

    Get PDF
Emerging economies offer tremendous potential for organisations seeking to expand globally and to attain the associated rewards. However, organisations differ in their entrepreneurial tendencies to enter new markets and to introduce new products in emerging economies. Organisations also differ in their abilities to manage their development programs, that is, their execution of different types of projects that lead to success in emerging markets. Finally, organisations differ in which overall measures of program performance are consistent with their strategic objectives. This study provides a literature foundation and conceptual framework designed to understand which market entry and product line strategies and performance measures are appropriate for organisations pursuing strategic success in emerging markets. This study sets forward grounded propositions that different strategic types will vary in their market entry and product line strategies, in the project composition of their development programs, and in the orientations of performance measures used to evaluate their development programs. Prospectors, according to type, will enter emerging economies by introducing new product lines to new customer types, and by emphasizing new-to-the-world products. They will evaluate their development programs with Growth-oriented performance measures. Defenders will more typically occupy secure niches within emerging economies by emphasizing product improvement and cost reduction projects for current types of customers. They will evaluate their development programs with Efficiency-oriented performance measures. Analyzers will either target new customer types with proven products, or serve an existing market niche with new product lines. They will evaluate their development program performance with Strategy-oriented measures

Communications Between Organizations and Their Markets in Emerging Economies: a Research Agenda

    Get PDF
Most marketing, and particularly marketing communications concepts and approaches, have been developed and codified in western economies. Academicians and professionals have then tried to export those concepts to emerging markets, often with little success. In this paper, we argue many of those concepts are not applicable or relevant for the emerging economies around the world. Yet, due to the constrained and controlled nature of academic publishing, little new information has been developed or distributed on the differences and needs of scholars and professionals in emerging economies. This paper suggests a new marketing communications research agenda for emerging economies based on four specific areas: (1) consumers and consumer behaviors, (2) brands and branding, (3) communication content and context and (4) emerging communication delivery systems. The authors encourage editors of academic journals to recognize the need and be more open to emerging economy research and papers

    Get PDF
Being a significant component of the contemporary business world, female entrepreneurial activity is considered a key element of economic growth worldwide, and especially in emerging markets. The present study explores gender differences in efficiency-driven countries based on the GEM data through correlation and regression analyses. An important finding of the paper is that training on starting a new business as a common factor, has a greater influence on female entrepreneurial activity. Therefore, training should be considered an essential issue when designing government policies and stimulating entrepreneurial activity in general, of both female and male entrepreneurs

    Get PDF
To keep pace with the rapid changes in the environment, organizations must keep pace, otherwise they are likely to perish. They have to remain flexible and continually improve to gain competitive advantage and must be able to adapt and strive to take the lead, otherwise their survival will be at stake. To meet the challenges posed by this rapidly changing environment, an organization must create and assimilate new knowledge at an increasing pace, encourage innovation and learn to compete in new ways. The culture of the organization plays a very significant role in keeping the process of learning vibrant in the organization leading it to become a learning organization. The present paper identifies the relationship between the organization culture and the learning organization in Indian business organizations and concludes that the organization culture plays a vital role in the development of a learning organization. It further contends that three major constructs of organization culture, i.e., openness, proaction and experimentation tend to provide the members of an organization with a sense of direction and creative thinking which in turn enhance organizational learning in turbulent environment

Carreer Aspirations of R&D Professionals in Government Research Institutes and Multinational Corporations in Malaysia

    No full text
The research compares the influence of self-efficacy, organizational socialization and continuous improvement practices on career aspirations of research and development (R&D) professionals of government research institutes (GRIs) and multinational corporations (MNCs) in Malaysia. This study used Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) to examine the influence of the selected variables on career aspirations of the R&D professionals. Data were collected from 164 respondents from GRIs and 120 respondents from MNCs in the country. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regressions. The two groups differed significantly in terms of their levels of self-efficacy and organizational socialization, and were not significantly different in continuous improvement practices and career aspirations. Self-efficacy and organizational socialization levels of R&D professionals in GRIs were found to be slightly higher than those of MNCs. Regression results showed MNCs reported higher explanatory power compared to that of the GRIs in terms of variance in career aspiration. This study suggests that continuous improvement practices and self-efficacy are relevant to the model of SCCT. Managers and human resource development (HRD) practitioners in both types of organizations need to restructure the work practices of R&D professionals by strengthening the quality improvement work procedures and cognitive-behaviour initiatives

Strategic Asset-seeking Activities of Emerging Multinationals: Perspectives of Foreign Acquisitions by Indian Pharmaceutical MNEs

    Get PDF
While in general, studies on foreign acquisitions by emerging multinationals (EMNEs) have predicted these acquisitions to be driven by both market-seeking and strategic resource-seeking motivations, more concrete analyses on this topic are limited. This paper contributes to the existing literature by analyzing the overseas acquisition activities of EMNEs from Indian pharmaceutical sector. Using the general framework of technological change in emerging economies, Indian pharmaceutical firms are identified to have delicate weakness in their product development capabilities to face intensifying competition in the globalized policy regime. It makes sense for these firms to internationalize through acquisitions of foreign assets that help them not only access new markets but also new products and technologies to overcome their limited product development competencies. The empirical findings highlight the role of host market size, intensity of patenting, skill and liberal FDI policy regime as the key determinants of the geographical distributions of Indian pharmaceutical acquisitions. This implies that EMNEs from Indian pharmaceutical industry are using acquisition as a mixed strategy of accessing markets as well as strategic assets/resources
