Examining Institutional Content of the Balanced Scorecard: Logics and Translations in Ukrainian Business Environment

    Get PDF
This study examines institutional definitions and meanings Ukrainian managers attach to one of the most popular management concepts – the Balanced Scorecard. Socially constructed discourses, that is, beliefs, understandings, expectations, interpretations, collective cognitions and meanings beyond initial technical purposes of the BSC are treated as an institutional content that infuses and distorts technical aspects of the practice. Results confirm that technical foundations of this practice have been infused with institutionally constructed meanings and understandings generated from the local dominant institutional order, constructing the meaning of the BSC as a coercive, command-and control management system. Gathering information from local sources of information and strengthening them with collective understandings, the BSC has been infused with new meanings and beliefs, dramatically changing the original technical core of the concept. The study shows how the meaning of the management concept changed in the new institutional context under the dominance of the local logic. Specifically, the study contributes to the individual-level research on the impact of institutional logics on actors’ actions by showing the process of individuals’ responses to two macro-level meaning systems materialized in the BSC – prototypical and home institutional logics. &nbsp

Determinants of Bank Performance in a Developing Country: Evidence From Morocco

    Get PDF
This paper aims to define long-term determinants of Moroccan commercial banks performance, for the period 2005-2015, using the Johansen cointegration test. For this purpose, we use bank performance ratios (ROA, ROE and NIM) as dependent variables, and deposits, liquidity ratios, bank-specific and macroeconomic variables as explicative variables. Results obtained show that long-term performance of Moroccan commercial banks depends on deposits, short-term, long-term and funding liquidity, the size of the bank and its square, internal and external funding, deposits interest rates and foreign direct investments. These results show the significance of bank-specific variables as long-term determinants of the performance of Moroccan commercial banks. &nbsp

Nostalgia May Not Work for Everyone: the Case of Innovative Consumers

    Get PDF
In recent years, marketers have widely used nostalgia in their marketing strategies. However, little research has focused on understanding whether consumer responses to nostalgic communication are always positive. Seeking to fill this gap and referring to social identity theoretical framework, current research examines the relationship between nostalgia, innovativeness and consumer purchasing decisions. Empirical results demonstrate that innovativeness and nostalgia might indeed act in opposite directions. Managerial implications of the findings are considered and directions for future research suggested. &nbsp

    Get PDF
This study focuses on the role of delivery services in online purchases and their impact on customer satisfaction. Delivery service is one of the most important tasks of online purchase related to logistics, its performance directly influences the level of satisfaction. We aim to research what the online webshops and e-commerce businesses can or should do to have a positive impact on the customer satisfaction level. The research showed that delivery process in online purchases plays a significant role in customer satisfaction and in the decision making of whether or not one should purchase goods from a webshop. We contribute to the existing literature by widening it towards Eastern Europe and Turkey with our own conducted quantitative research. We released our questionnaire to an Eastern European and Turkish community as we were aiming to gather information on the emerging markets of Europe. We have utilized the following methods: frequency distribution, reliability testing, correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, normality test and one-way ANOVA to test our hypotheses. We found that delivery services and privacy policies play the most important part in ordering online in these communities, however, the income level of a person shows no significant relation towards customer satisfaction. We agree that any difficulties with the delivery process can have a negative effect on the purchase and the consumers, and that it influences how one can satisfy his or her needs.&nbsp

    Get PDF
Drawing on the study of micro and small family businesses in a transition economy, this research explores the effects of trust transferred from the family to the business system. Specifically, it examines how the leader’s interpersonal trust in the member affects the quality of the leader-member exchange (LMX) in familial dyads. The results reveal that interpersonal trust has a positive effect on LMX and the degree of this association depends on the leader’s orientation. This relationship is strengthened by the leader’s orientation, however, only in the case when the orientation is family-centric. The moderating effect is not statistically significant when the leader adopts business-centric orientation

The Impact of Investment Horizon on the Return and Risk of Investments in Securities in Lithuania

    Get PDF
The paper focuses on the impact of time horizon on risk and return, which usually is the object of discussions about “stock versus bond”. The aim of this paper is to investigate the transformation of risk and return when increasing the investment term, and to determine the impact of the investment horizon on investment results when investing in shares and bonds in Lithuania. The authors are proposing a hypothesis that a long-term investment in shares is not only more profitable, but also less risky than investment in bonds. Research of developed markets indicated that long-term investments in shares were more attractive than in bonds: the risk of shares fell to the risk of bonds, but at the same time, the return of shares remained high. However, there are just a few surveys in this field involving developing markets. Empirical results of this research are based on OMXV index and 10-year government bond data from Lithuania. Our results are different from the research results carried out by authors in developed countries and show that even with an increase in the investment horizon up to 60 months, the risk of shares in Lithuania still remains higher than the risk of bonds, and return of shares is lower than that of bonds. Risk premium for shares is negative during all the periods exceeding 12 months. The results suggest that investors with long-run investment horizons must consider the impact of horizon as well as the development of securities market they invest in
