Thyroid Hormone Receptors Approach Their 40th Birthday
International audienceTaking advantage of the approaching 40th birthday of seminal articles describing the cloning of the genes that encode the nuclear receptors of thyroid hormone, Endocrinology publishes a collection of review articles dedicated to these receptors. The collection highlights the advances in the understanding of the structure, ligand interactions, and crosstalk with other signaling pathways. It reports ongoing research, which continues to reveal the complexity and physiological relevance of nuclear thyroid hormone receptor (TR) functions in tissues. Despite progress, key questions remain about cell-specific gene regulation, negative feedback mechanisms, and TR involvement in cancer. The new collection of review articles published in Endocrinology represents a milestone in a long-term project that illustrates the diversity of information that TR-centered research brings to basic science. They also outline that there is plenty of room for new and exciting investigations

International audienceThe sermon on the women bearing myrrh, catalogued as pseudochrysostomian (CPG 4940) and belonging to the patriarchal homilary of Constantinople, has two recensions: a long one in homilary I and a shorter one in homilary II. The identification of patristic sources – John Chrysostom, often through Theophylact of Ohrid, but also Eusebius, Athanasius, Basil, Gregory the Theologian, Cyril of Alexandria, Gregory of Antioch, Mark the Monk and the catenae on the Gospels – allows for a detailed comparison of the two recensions, which undoubtedly go back to a common basis: each, in fact, has its own originality. The investigation is followed by a French translation of the second recension
Algebraically special perturbations of the Kerr black hole: a metric formulation
International audiencePerturbations of the Kerr black hole are notoriously difficult to describe in the metric formalism and are usually studied in terms of perturbations of the Weyl scalars. In this work, we focus on the algebraically special linear perturbations (ASLP) of the Kerr geometry and show how one can describe this subsector of the perturbations solely using the metric formulation. To that end, we consider the most general twisting algebraically special solution space of vacuum General Relativity. By linearizing around the Kerr solution, we obtain two coupled partial differential wave equations describing the dynamics of the Kerr ASLP. We provide an algorithm to solve them analytically in the small spin approximation up to third order, providing the first exact solution of this kind in the metric formulation. Then, we use this framework to study the stationary zero modes of the Kerr geometry. We present the exact analytical form of the shifts in mass and spin together with the required change of coordinates needed to identify them. Finally, we also provide for the first time closed expressions for the solution-generating perturbations generating the NUT and acceleration charges, thus deforming the Kerr solution to the linearized Kerr-NUT and spinning C-metric. These results provide a first concrete and rare example of perturbations of the Kerr black hole which can be treated entirely in the metric formulation. They can serve as a useful testbed to search for hidden symmetries of the Kerr perturbations
Revealing the diversity and uses of Vitis vinifera and Olea europaea in medieval Morocco: archaeobotanical, morphometric and textual cross-approach
International audienceAlthough the importance of vines and olives is well established in the medieval western Mediterranean, in Morocco, it has rarely been investigated other than through textual sources alone, due to the low number of archaeobotanical studies. The rapid development of archaeobotany in the past decade allows us to propose a first review on Vitis vinifera and Olea europaea medieval history, using a cross-disciplinary approach (carpology, anthracology, textual sources, geometric morphometrics), to document their past diversity, their use and their presence in the agricultural landscape. The archaeobotanical studies highlight the prominent role played by these two species during the Middle Ages, placing them alongside naked wheat and hulled barley among the most commonly consumed/used plants. Archaeological pips and stones clearly indicate the consumption of these fruits in a great part of the country, at least as far as the foot of the High Atlas and the beginning of the argan zone. The ancient exploited diversity is characterized by the morphometric approach, as well as by textual sources which specify the existence of dozens of grape and olive varieties as well as different types of products (wines, vinegars, verjuice, olive oil). Although the archaeobotanical data suffer from a certain geographical imbalance, with a greater number of sites studied in the north of the country, the discovery of crushing/pressing by-products remains and the importance of Olea in anthracological assemblages suggest the important role it played in the Haouz region, south of Marrakech, by the end of the Middle Ages
International audienceIn order to understand the evolution of metallic contaminant flux in the Saone River towards Lyon over time, two sediment cores were studied. These cores provide records spanning over 80 years with relatively continuous and homogeneous deposition. Age models were established based on radionuclide profiles (137Cs and 210Pb), defining high deposition rates (1–2 cm. yr⁻¹) that enable to study contaminant trends at high temporal resolution. These analyses reveal distinct contamination phases linked to the industrial history of the basin. Based on the chronology covered by these sediment archives, copper, lead, and cadmium contamination can be identified as early as the 1950s, with peaks extending during the 1970s. Later, while contamination levels of these metals, silver reaches maximal concentrations at two periods, in the 1970s and 1980s, and then during the 1990s. Within the industrial context of the basin, silver contamination can be associated with the photographic industry. These findings show that secondary channels of the Saone River have been affected by multi-metallic contamination accumulated since the 1950s. They act as pollution archives, enabling the reconstruction of the consequences of anthropogenic activities on river ecosystems. Moreover, this stock of metallic contaminants requires integrated management within the framework of secondary channel restoration efforts.
A detour against the highway: observing competing forms of justice into everyday mobility
International audienceThis paper investigates the notion of detours in everyday life—both as a form of resistance to a mega-highway project in south-eastern France and as a broader practice. Using qualitative methods such as interviews, participant observation and a participative workshop with residents of a planned-to-be-crossed municipality, this article shows how the practice of detour is mobilised both as part of a strategy of struggle and as part of everyday practices by residents to denounce the dysfunctions of the metropolisation process and its impacts on the region. Drawing on debates around mobility justice and methods adapted to the study of protests, we discuss the notion of detour as a way of inhabiting a place. This paper examines how detours can formpart of a political reading of mobility in a context of metropolisation, illustrating how such detour practices are conceived as foundational to alternative ways of being and living. Finally, the paper aims to put into perspective the real capability of detouring in a constrained everyday context; this capability of detours may contribute to reshaping local social class relations, evaluated through the lens of mobility justice
