Distributed scatter search for the examination timetabling problem

importance. It belongs to the general class of educational timetabling problems and has been
exposed to numerous approaches for solving it. We propose a parallel/distributed solution which is
based on the metaheuristic method Scatter Search combined with Path Relinking in an attempt to
diversify the search procedure by producing promising new timetables. Our approach improves on
the best publicly available results for the datasets of ITC2007 (International Timetabling
Competition 2007-2008). The constraint of limited execution time that was imposed by ITC2007
was disregarded in an effort to pursue the best values our approach could reach. We consider this
specific examination timetabling problem as a “test bed” for timetabling problems in general and
we expect to provide insight for developing effective solution processes for other practical
scheduling problems

An attempt is made in this paper to describe the development of dietary consumption in Greece during the period 1957 to 2005. All dimensions of alimentary consumption patterns are examined here with a specific focus on: a) their natural characteristics (i.e. plant and animal components); b) technical features of the production process (primary, secondary and tertiary transformation processes); c) their biological and nutritious dimensions (as well as related health and safety issues); and d) socio-economic attributes of these patterns of consumption (i.e. consumption features of the different social, economic, demographic, geographic and professional layers of the population)

Στην εργασία αυτή περιγράφονται και αναλύονται τα αστικά και τα αγροτικά διατροφικά πρότυπα στην Ελλάδα για τη χρονική περίοδο 1957-2005. Στην αρχή της περιόδου αυτής οι διαφορές στη διατροφή μεταξύ των κατοίκων των αστικών και των αγροτικών περιοχών ήσαν σημαντικές αλλά συν τω χρόνω άρχισαν να αμβλύνονται και να παρατηρείται το φαινόμενο της «σύγκλισης των προτύπων». Τα στατιστικά στοιχεία που χρησιμοποιούνται προέρχονται από τις Έρευνες Οικογενειακών Προϋπολογισμών (Ε.Ο.Π.) της Ελλάδας για το χρονικό διάστημα 1957-2005. Για την επεξεργασία των στοιχείων χρησιμοποιείται η συνάρτηση «χαρακτηρισμού των προτύπων» που συγκροτείται από αριθμοδείκτες, οι οποίοι ανα-ταξινομούν τα συστατικά των βασικών κατηγοριών κατανάλωσης σε α) φυτικά ή ζωικά και β) αγροτικά ή βιομηχανικά. Τα αποτελέσματα των επεξεργασιών αυτών οδηγούν στην κατασκευή πινάκων που διευκολύνουν την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων και τον ποιοτικό χαρακτηρισμό της εξέλιξης της κατανάλωσης (παραδοσιακή Μεσογειακή διατροφή ή σύγχρονη βιομηχανική διεθνοποιημένη, αγροτικά ή βιομηχανικά διατροφικά πρότυπα)
Competitive dynamics in Greek telecommunications: The effects of telecommunications reform on market structure
No full textThis paper analyses the implications of liberalization on market
structure in the Greek telecommunication market from 1992 to 2005. In
particular, we investigate the influence of the sector’s reform on
market structure and the possible explanatory factors of these
dependent variable. The data refers to 44 of the most prominent
companies of fixed telephony, mobile telephony and internet services
and was compiled by means of interviews with the help of a
questionnaire. The data was evaluated both descriptively and
econometrically (Panel Feasible Generalised Least Squares – FGLS). Our
descriptive analysis concluded that liberalization of the
telecommunication market reduced its concentration degree and
increased competition. This conclusion is supported by other research
studies. The econometric research showed that both private ownership
and specialized personnel in the commercial and technical sector seem
to positively influence the companies’ market share. In this way, the
present article offers useful information about a field that continues
to be characterized by a vast researching deficit
