The solution to the 3RD Clay Millennium Problem. A short proof that P not equal to NP and NP = Exptime in the context of Zermelo-Frankel set theory

    No full text
In this paper I provide a very short but decisive proof that P not equal to NP, and NP = EXPTIME in the context of the Zermelo-Frankel set theory and deterministic Turing machines. We discuss also the subtle implications of considering the P versus NP problem, in different axiomatic theories. The results of the current paper definitely solve the 3rd Clay Millennium problem P versus NP, in a simple and transparent away that the general scientific community, but also the experts of the area, can follow, understand and therefore become able to accept

The economic crisis of 2008 and the financial system supervision: towards a European Banking Union

    No full text
The significant repercussions of the recent crisis in the financial sector and the real economy have led to the development of policies aimed at strengthening the stability of the international banking system. Banking regulatory reforms (Basel III) improve micro-prudential supervision and involve macro-prudential supervision to avoid systemic risk. Capital requirements are tightening up and the quality of core capital is upgraded in order to provide greater coverage of losses and better risk management. In addition, a new framework for liquidity risk is introduced, as well as a complementary tool for limiting leverage. Recently, an agreement was reached in the EU to establish a Banking Union in the Eurozone, based on uniform regulation, supervision, bank clearing and deposit protection mechanisms. This framework includes a common banking capital for bank consolidation, which aims to reduce the impact on savers. This study aims to analyse the banking sector's activities and the constituent elements of the existing regulatory framework, particularly those involved in the causes of the financial crisis. It also aims to present the dimensions of the new regulatory framework for joint supervision leading to the European Banking Union and to analyse the pillars that form it, even though they are still in progress. The analysis will also build on the experiences from the recent crisis, in order to reach clear conclusions about the necessity and role of the Banking Union

Greek labour market: The evaluation of minimum wage and unemployment during the period 2000-2017

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the minimum wage level and the rates of unemployment and employment at Greek labour market, 2000 to 2017. According to theoretical and empirical studies, the relationship between labour market and the minimum wage rate is either positive, or negative, or even not related at all, depending on the assumptions about the characteristics of the labour market. Our study concludes that there is no clear correlation between the level of minimum wage and unemployment in the case of Greek labour market. Evidence is presented that employment and unemployment rates at Greek labour market during this period are due primarily to the factors other than increases or decreases in the minimum wage. This conclusion is supported by the research studies conducted in other countries

Prediction ability of Altman model for bankruptcy in Greek enterprises

This study initially decodes and analyzes the financial robustness of companies that bankrupt in 2012, aiming to determine with the use of historical data the factors that could forecast the bankruptcy of these enterprises. The year 2012 was selected because Greece was the unique country from the GIIPS states (Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain) in which paradoxically 2012 is the year with inversion of the tendency and reduction (6.74%) in the number of recorded corporate bankruptcies. For the research purpose the second- revised Altman Z-score model is used, which was applied in a ten sample of bankrupted enterprises from various branches. The rate of success of the model in the final sample of enterprises one year before the bankruptcy is 100%, which means higher predictability than the percentage of 94% exported by Altman in 1968. As long as it concerns the rate of success 2 years before bankruptcy it was presented smaller compared to the -1 year (80%), however comparing the result with the application of Altman (72%), the model in the present research presented also higher prediction ability. The reversal of the trend of the legally recorded bankruptcies in Greece seems to be due to statistical rather than economic reasons. Many small and medium size firms as well as sole traders led to closure, but their bankruptcy was not recorded as judicial bankrup

The evolution of alternative forms of tourism: a theoretical background

Between the 1970s and early 1980s new forms of tourism emerged in developing countries as an alternative solution to the “undesired” type of tourism “the mass tourism” or “the conventional/commercial tourism” or “the traditional tourism”. These forms of tourism appearing in different names and various models, served a more sensitive approach giving priority to natural and cultural resources at the front line of planning and development. The purpose of this paper is to describe the theoretical background of alternative tourism in which origins and main definitions are presented followed by an analysis of the complexity of classifying the alternative forms of tourism. Three of the many forms, seemed to be the core of alternative tourism, are distinguished and analyzed. The ecotourism, the cultural tourism and the creative tourism. Ecotourism in recent years, encloses many tourist forms focused on natural environment. Although these forms are closely related to ecotourism need to be distinguished from it as ecotourism presents many dimensions. In the concept of alternative tourism, the dynamic growth of cultural tourism can be explained by the fast growth of demand for trips to various cultural attractions and amenities. A rise in interest of tourists both to distant cultures and to the local heritage occurred through the increase of educated people around the world and the globalization. Moreover, technology supported this growth. The cultural tourist, from consumer is transforming to producer of the cultural products and experiences. As culture tourist become more interactive and creative, the cultural tourism need to be repositioned and to become more “creative”. In “creative tourism” there is a co-creation of creative experiences between visitors and hosts, usually expressed through the creation of networks, itineraries, courses and events. Finally, the paper ends with a brief mention on the current trends in alternative tourism and the concluding remarks

The role of the creative industries in regional development during the economic cycle: case of the Region of Epirus, Greece

In the era of extraordinary changes and globalisation, many researchers acknowledge that creativity and innovation are now driving the new economy. Countries and regions that embrace creativity generate higher revenue, more jobs and provide greater stability. The objective of this paper is to analyse the role of cultural and creative industries in regional development during the economic cycle. In this context, we map the current situation and needs for development of the cultural and creative industries using the case of the Region of Epirus in Greece. This research is based on literature reviews, interviews, statistical data and commercial register’s data. The data was collected between September 2014 and March 2015. The database is built according to the NACE codes used to describe the cultural and creative industries. In the paper, we analyse the trend in the development of cultural and creative industries during the last decades with emphasis on the years of the last economic crisis. We identify main opportunities and challenges for its development, necessary conditions, main constraints and we try to outline main directions for future sector’s growth taking into consideration the assumption that the development of this sector maybe the engine of the future region’s growth

On the 4th Clay millennium problem: Proof of the regularity of the solutions of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, based on the conservation of particles

    No full text
The majority of the applications of fluid dynamics refer to fluids that during the flow the particles are conserved. It is natural to have in mind such physical applications when examining the 4th Clay Millennium Problem. The assumptions of the standard formulation of the above problem, although reflecting the finiteness and conservation of the momentum and energy, as well as the smoothness of incompressible physical flows, do not reflect the conservation of particles of the fluid as local structure. By formulating the later conservation law and adding it to the hypotheses, it becomes possible to prove the regularity both for the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. From the physical point of view this may mean that: if a) the particles like neutrons, electrons and protons remain such particle during the flow or if atoms exist in the fluid that if b) the atoms remain atoms of the same atomic number during the flow or if there are molecules in the fluid, if c) the molecules remain molecules of the same chemical type during the flow, then the regularity (smoothness of flow at all times) for the 4th Clay Millennium problem is provable and holds. The methodology for such a proof is based on proving that if a Blow-up would exist then at least for a particle range, the total energy would also converge to infinite (see Propositions 5.1, 5.2) which is a contradiction to the hypothesis of finite initial energy of the standard formulation of the 4th Clay Millennium problem
