This study aims to present the articulation between a proposed phygital taxonomy and the a/r/cographic methodology, thereby offering an integrated methodological framework for analysing and guiding contemporary hybrid artistic practices. In recent years, contemporary artistic creation has been characterised by the fusion of the tangible and the virtual — a phenomenon referred to as "phygital". This concept describes the interconnection between physical and digital elements, which is redefining processes of production, appreciation, and interaction with art. The phygital taxonomy presented here enables the mapping of new hybrid territories. It facilitates a detailed evaluation of the symbiosis between the material dimension, including technological devices, and the virtual or digital dimension, resulting from the execution of code or the reproduction of digital media. The a/r/cographic methodology, in turn, structures the creative process around three essential axes: aesthetics (the cognition, emotions, and sensations elicited by the work), aptitude (the technical and conceptual skills demonstrated), and function (the socio-cultural and communicative impact of the work). The artwork Texel2048Loom, developed by the first author of this study, illustrates the proposed approach. This text also underscores the need for further refinement, particularly in ethical, cultural, and multisensory dimensions, offering clear contributions to future research and practice in post-digital art
Arquitetura do Desaparecimento: Autorretratos Negros e a Contravisualidade Como Estética Reparativa
This article analyses the self-portrait series Arquitetura do Desaparecimento (Architecture of Disappearance) by Brazilian photographer Roger Silva. Silva’s photographs are presented as an aesthetic and political expression of decolonial counter-visuality produced by Black photographers from peripheral contexts. Through self-portraiture, the artist articulates a gesture of re-existence that challenges normative regimes of visibility, identity, and representation. The study draws on decolonial theory (Azoulay, 2021; Fanon, 1952/2008; Maldonado-Torres, 2020), image studies (Campt, 2021), representation (Hall, 2006, 2013/2016) and reparative aesthetics (Best, 2016) to interpret Silva’s images as symbolic devices of resistance to racism and of the reconstruction of subjectivities. The captions accompanying the photographs are incorporated into the analysis as discursive extensions of the visual work, revealing invisible layers of the experiences portrayed. The article demonstrates that contemporary Black self-portraiture, particularly that developed by Black photographers from the peripheries, constitutes an artivist practice of meaning-making, fabulation and symbolic healing, creating new visual grammars that subvert the logic of the coloniality of seeing and knowing. This article argues that these images contribute to strengthening a counter-visuality established through the language of Black peripheral photography
The objective of this investigation was to discuss how in Incidente em Antares (2013), by Erico Verissimo, the humor moves in a fantastic, ambivalent, apocalyptic atmosphere, to transgress the limits of the possible and the impossible, leading us to reflection and criticism of the political and social upheavals, in a country on the eve of a dictatorship. We analyze how the mysteries of the fantastic invade not only the daily lives of the living, but also of the dead, who cannot accept the laceration of the normal course of the post-mortem process and want the reinstatement of normality. To construct the analyses, this work is anchored in the theoretical corpus based on Furtado (1980), Reisz (2001), Propp (1992), Bergson (1983), Campra (2008), Eagleton (2020), Roas (2022) and Boccuti (2018). We observe that, as the bodies rot, the hypocrisy and crimes of some authorities are exposed
Between the fantastic and the wonderful real: The abyssal lines and the laughter of arrogance in the amazonian narrative of the boto
The paper aims to discuss the discursive and aesthetic relationship established between fantasy and humor, taking as corpus an oral narrative about the boto, collected in the Guaporé Valley, in Rondônia, in the Amazon. The narrative, which aligns with the wonderful real aspect, brings into play a game of desires for truth and laughter
Gnostic Secularocene: An Eco-Historical Reading of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness
This essay proposes an eco-historical reading of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, examining its depiction of colonial imperiality and its entanglement with the ecological and racial dimensions of secular modernity. Framing Conrad’s novella within the concept of the Secularocene, as theorized by Mohamed Amer Meziane, and drawing on Bruno Latour’s reinterpretation of Eric Voegelin’s perspective of modernity as Gnostic, the study examines how the secular imperial project immanentizes a Gnostic-like dualism, thereby creating a world geography that is based on both the desirability and contempt for matter. In Europe, matter is supposed to be subjected to the realization of a “kingdom of perfection”, while in Africa it embodies the “evil” that resists the secular ideal. The essay exposes how Conrad’s novella unveils the nihilistic impasse that underlies this imperial geography, and thus the Secularocene. The transformation of a specific continent, in this case, Africa, into a symbol of evil, results in the pervasive devaluation of the human experience of earthiness.
Examining the influence of law 4538/2018 on foster care and child mental health outcomes within the greek child protection framework
The implementation of the Greek Law 4538/2018 concerning the social institution of children's fostering is examined. It is based on a doctoral thesis aimed at identifying the best practices in promoting the de-institutionalization of minors to improve their mental health. A mixed-method approach was used, beginning with a quantitative survey to the 59 Directors in Children’s Homes across Greece. 4 Children's Homes were found to be the exemplary child protection agencies in terms of fostering. The second phase of the quantitative research was carried out on their ongoing foster care cases. Semi-structured interviews conducted with 9 social workers who had undertaken these 16 children’s fosters care cases. The research revealed that long-term foster care for children between the ages of 4-6 is widespread and often foster care leads to adoption and contact with biological family remains rare. Overall, the research argues for the urgent need for designing a unified foster care protocol across Greece to ensure consistency and effectiveness in child protection services
Interaction between teacher and deaf student: a case study in the Brazilian inclusive context
The aim of this research is to understand how the interaction between a teacher and a deaf student takes place in a class in the early years of elementary school in a Brazilian school. To achieve this goal, a semi-structured interview and observation with a field diary were used. This is a qualitative, descriptive case study that analyses the subjects in their social context and the interactions that take place between them. The analyzed data showed that a good interaction between the teacher and the deaf student encourages and favours the deaf student's participation in classroom activities. It was found that the student participated in class, interacted with classmates and the teacher, and that Libras were used at certain times in class to expand the vocabulary of the listeners. Despite the challenges inherent in the Brazilian educational context, we have seen positive strategies being developed in a public school from an inclusive perspective.O objetivo desta investigação é compreender como ocorre a interação entre um professor e um aluno surdo numa turma dos primeiros anos do ensino fundamental numa escola brasileira.
Life’s Journeys: MacIntyre’s Idea of Life as Enacted Narrative
The starting point for this work is MacIntyre’s idea of life as an enacted narrative. MacIntyre introduces the idea of narrative in After Virtue, as part of his theory of virtue, after the concept of practice and before the concept of tradition. The representation of human life in narrative terms brings to the fore the longstanding relationship between philosophy and literature. In the following text I will try to examine the concept of the narrative structure of human life as it was first presented in After Virtue and demonstrate its continuity in MacIntyre’s later work. In this context, I will attempt, first, to examine whether MacIntyre’s idea of narrative can provide a basis for the unity of human life and action and, second, to identify its main differences from theories that emphasize fragmentation and see life as a series of disconnected events and interpretations challenging the notions of coherence and unity
Who Owns Renewable Energy? The Advantages of Aristotelian-Influenced Ownership
As renewable energy becomes increasingly important, we may ask philosophical questions such as who owns renewable energy? Due to renewable energy’s widespread nature and its potential for domestic harnessing, it suits an Aristotelian-influenced ownership type where the energy is largely harnessed by individual, self-reliant households. Such an ownership type also is advantageous, in that it would encourage sustainability, support the rights of small groups and provide a form of social justice. Hence, it offers a route for developing future energy policy, and may be favoured by societies largely composed of self-contained homes but could also cater for small communities
Representing the Future: Amid Present Contingencies and Future Aspirations
Alessandro Ferrara’s Sovereignty Across Generations is a compelling work that engages with the contemporary debate on intergenerational justice. Ferrara intervenes in this debate, tackling not only questions of ethical and political obligations between different generations in terms of distributive justice or environmental sustainability, but also of institutional continuity and political possibilities. He develops his argument with the usual acumen and systematicity, identifying the main problems, deconstructing their various dimensions and then addressing each of them to construct a solid answer. The core of the argument concerns democratic sovereignty, specifically the locus of constituent power: whether this power resides with the people in a cross-generational sense—incorporating past, present, and future generations—or the people in its pro-tempore living segment. The former perspective leads to what Ferrara terms ‘sequential sovereignty,’ which he advocates and which he considers attuned to Rawls’ political liberalism; while the latter results in what he calls ‘serial sovereignty,’ a view he criticises and associates with contemporary populist movements and thinkers like Rousseau, Locke, Sieyès, and Jefferson.
