Gʻalvirchilik bilan shugʻullangan, ayni paytda tabiblik ham qilgan. U kuchli nufuzga ega, tasavvuf gʻoyalari bilan tanish shaxs boʻlgan. Buxoroda moʻgʻullarga qarshi boshlangan qoʻzgʻolonga mashhur ulamo Shamsuddin Mahbubiyning taklifi bilan rahbarlik kilgan. Buxoro atrofida moʻgʻullarga qarshi boʻlgan jangda halok boʻlgan. Qabri ustiga 13-asrda qurilgan daxma O‘zbekiston mustaqillikka erishgach, qayta taʼmirlandi. Mahmud Torobiy haqida Oybek "Mahmud Torobiy" (1944) opera librettosi va dostonini, Asad Dilmurod "Mahmud Torobiy" (1998) tarixiy romanini yozgan.
