Bayesian Theory of Mind for Strategic Adaptation in Social Interactions

    No full text
People frequently cooperate with others despite uncertainty and potential risks of exploitation. While many cognitive mechanisms underlying cooperation have been identified, how people infer and adapt to others' cooperative dispositions remains unclear. This study investigates how people use Bayesian Theory of Mind (BToM) to infer others' social preferences and adapt their strategic decisions in repeated social interactions. Using an iterated prisoner's dilemma paradigm, we examine whether people go beyond simple behavioral patterns and engage in sophisticated mental state inference to predict and respond to their partners' future actions. Our computational modeling approach combines BToM with utility functions parameterized by social preference variables, allowing us to formally test how people integrate observed behaviors with inferred mental states to make strategic decisions. The results will advance our understanding of the cognitive mechanisms underlying human cooperation and strategic social adaptation
