iCO-Eval2: Cognitive Features of Indirect Speech Acts
The offer of some cake can be declined by saying “I amon a diet” – an indirect reply. Here, we asked
whether certain well-established psychological and conceptual features are linked to the
(in)directness of speech acts – an issue unexplored so far. Subjects rated direct and indirect
speech acts performed by the same critical linguistic forms in different dialogic contexts. We
find that indirect replies were understood with less certainty, were less predictable by, less
coherent with and less semantically similar to their context question. These effects were smaller
when direct and indirect replies were matched for the speech act type they performed,
compared to when they were unmatched. Crucially, all measured dimensions were strongly
associated with each other. These findings suggest that indirectness goes hand-in-hand with a
set of cognitive properties, which should be taken into account when interpreting the findings
of experimental, including neuroimaging studies of indirectness

This dataset contains motion analysis data from five female persons (age: 24.8 ± 1.9 y, height: 168.6 ± 6.8 cm, body mass: 66.4 ± 10.3 kg, body mass index: 23.2 ± 2.4 kg∙m-2) and 13 male persons (age: 31.3 ± 7.3 y, height: 182.6 ± 6.7 cm, body mass: 78.0 ± 11.7 kg, body mass index: 23.3 ± 2.3 kg∙m-2) using a motion capture system. Participants completed a total of three measurements with alternating three-minute motion activities (walking at 4 km/h, hiking at 6 km/h, running at 9 km/h, running at 12 km/h) in different orders on a treadmill lasting between 11 and 16 minutes. A total of 40 minutes was recorded for each participant. In addition to the camera system, two force plates, two pressure measurement insoles, and three IMUs were also used for data acquisition.

This study examined whether 13-16-month-old infants’ communicative behaviors during a central-fixation task reveal referential understanding of sound symbolism (i.e., the non-arbitrary link between sounds and meanings). We manipulated two variables: congruency (congruent vs. incongruent) between the auditory word and the paired image (e.g., “ball” paired congruently with a ball or incongruently with a sock), and word type (familiar words, e.g., “ball” versus sound-symbolic words, e.g., “lumu”). We hypothesized that infants would demonstrate a congruency effect—characterized by longer stimulus looking in congruent trials and increased social referencing in incongruent trials—regardless of word type. Results showed this predicted pattern for familiar word-object pairs across all measures. In contrast, for sound-symbolic pairs, this effect was absent in stimulus look duration and social looking. Crucially, however, infants’ communicative gestures toward the caregiver showed the predicted congruency effect for both word types, with infants producing more gestures during incongruent trials. This consistent directional effect in gesturing provides initial evidence that sound-symbolic words trigger referential expectations similar to those of familiar words. These findings support sound symbolism’s scaffolding role in early word learning and suggest that measuring explicit communicative behaviors provides a more sensitive index of infants’ referential expectations than stimulus looking-time measures alone
