Time-lagged recurrence: A data-driven method to estimate the predictability of dynamical systems
International audienceNonlinear dynamical systems are ubiquitous in nature and they are hard to forecast. Not only they may be sensitive to small perturbations in their initial conditions, but they are often composed of processes acting at multiple scales. Classical approaches based on the Lyapunov spectrum rely on the knowledge of the dynamic forward operator, or of a data-derived approximation of it. This operator is typically unknown, or the data are too noisy to derive its faithful representation. Here, we propose a data-driven approach to analyze the local predictability of dynamical systems. This method, based on the concept of recurrence, is closely linked to the well-established framework of local dynamical indices. When applied to both idealized systems and real-world datasets arising from large-scale atmospheric fields, our approach proves its effectiveness in estimating local predictability. Additionally, we discuss its relationship with other local dynamical indices, and how it reveals the scale-dependent nature of predictability. Furthermore, we explore its link to information theory, its extension that includes a weighting strategy, and its real-time application. We believe these aspects collectively demonstrate its potential as a powerful diagnostic tool for complex systems
Longitudinal and Vertical Distribution of Tire & Road Wear Particles in an Urban Bioswale
International audienceTire & Road Wear Particles (TRWPs) are generated by the abrasion of tire tread in contact with the road surface. These particles are a major source of microplastics in the environment and can permanently permeate ecosystems through stormwater runoff. This is concerning because TRWPs contain various chemicals and additives, which represent a proven risk for environmental compartments receiving stormwater runoff from road surfaces. Bioswales are crucial green infrastructure for managing runoff by reducing its pollutant load. The objective of the study was to quantify and characterize the longitudinal and vertical distributions of TRWPs in the soil matrix of a bioswale. The bioswale studied is the last of a series of bioswales and receives stormwater runoff from the road as well as from preceding bioswales. Soil samples were collected from the topsoil and at different core layers in the bioswale. The samples were analyzed by pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) targeting the synthetic and natural rubbers constituting the tires. The results indicate high levels of TRWP contamination for the soil near the road. A decreasing contamination profile between the inlet and outlet for the soils located in the heart of the bioswale is highlighted, which suggests a preferential zone of input and accumulation at the inlet. In the core layers, we found tire and road wear concentration decreasing with increasing soil depth. The present work aims at contributing to present literature on bioswale performance and towards informing the best management practices of such infiltration-based systems

The Old Folks at Home: Parental Retirement and Adult Children'sWell-being
We here use UK data and exploit the State Pension eligibility age to establish the causal effect of parental retirement on adult children's well-being in a Fuzzy Regression Discontinuity Design analysis. Maternal retirement increases adult children's life and income satisfaction by 0.20 standard deviations in the short run. These impacts are stronger for adult children with lower incomes, with young children of their own, and who live close to their retired parents. We emphasise the critical role of intergenerational time transfers from retired mothers in enhancing their adult children's well-being

From Housing Gains to Pension Losses: New Methods to Reveal Wealth Inequality Dynamics in Chile
This paper examines wealth inequality dynamics in Chile from 2007 to 2021, focusing on two key macroeconomic events: the sharp rise in housing prices after the introduction of a real estate value-added tax in 2016 and the substantial liquidation of pension assets through early withdrawals during the pandemic. We introduce a methodological innovation that aims to improve the measurement of wealth inequality by integrating administrative pension fund records into household wealth surveys using machine learning techniques. Our results reveal extreme levels of wealth concentration, with the top 10% holding approximately two-thirds of national private wealth. However, inequality slightly declined over the period, particularly after 2016, as the outcome of two opposing forces: housing appreciation, which benefited middle-class households, and pension fund withdrawals, which disproportionately reduced wealth at the lower end of the distribution
