This thesis dissertation aims to produce knowledge on the supply and demand of products sold in short food supply chains (SFSC) in metropolitan France, studying more precisely the location of farmers and consumers. Defined by the Plan Barnier in 2009, SFSCs are food supply chains with one intermediary at most between farmers and consumers. This limitation of the number of commercial intermediaries may cause farmers to carry out more logistical and commercial tasks such as delivery, order preparation, etc. We hypothesize that the geographical proximity between the farms and the consumption basins can make it possible to remove some of these constraints and therefore encourage the meeting between supply and demand for SFSC products. We thus target the study on peri-urban areas, where there is a geographical proximity between farmers and consumers, and where the challenges of developing sustainable food systems are significant. The work is organized in two parts: the study of the spatial distribution of SFSCs farms in France using data from the 2010 Agricultural Census and spatial econometric modeling; followed by a study of demand according to the location of consumers using econometric modeling, using data from the CODIA project dating from 2013. The results show that geographical proximity has an effect on supply and demand for SFSC products, farmers and consumers located in dense peri-urban areas having statistically more chances of buying or selling in SFSCs. However, other mechanisms are involved. Farms selling in SFSCs are located mainly in areas where agriculture is marginal, in the sense that the share of Utilized Agriculture Area land use is low: dense peri-urban territories but also landlocked rural territories, often in mountainous areas, where the accessibility of farms to consumption basins is very low. This may be linked to other forms of proximity between farmers and consumers (like relational proximity) but also to the fact that long food supply chains are less present in these territories. In order to see if these mechanisms, revealed by data from 2010, are still present, and in order to approach more closely the meeting between supply and demand for SFSC products, we also carried out two stated preference surveys (2022), studying the criteria for choosing an outlet in SFSC for market gardeners, and those for a point of sale in SFSC for consumers, systematically taking into account the location of the respondents. The variables studied are similar in the two surveys, namely the prices, travel times to deliver or go to the point of sale, and other forms of proximity (relational proximity between consumers and market gardeners, consideration of mutual aid for market gardeners). Using the choices made, we determine the travel times and prices that consumers and market gardeners would be willing to accept, depending on the points of sale and their location. These results show the importance of taking travel time into account to better understand the choices of buying/selling in SFSCs. They also show dynamics that seem partly similar to those observed in 2010. The travel times and prices accepted seem lower in the sparsely populated peri-urban areas. On the other hand, mutual aid is particularly valued in all types of areas, in particular in those of sparsely populated peri-urban areas.
Role of Cold Storage in Rooting of Stem Cuttings: A Review
International audienceCold storage is a strategy mainly used for ornamental cuttings for the purpose of prolonging production duration that provide the cuttings with the best condition at the time of planting. The results have been obtained from cold storage of carnations and chrysanthemums confirmed the fact that the herbaceous cuttings could be stored for about two months at not lower than 0ºC and more than 4ºC, with similar results of the cuttings directly planted without storage. On the other hand, hardwood cuttings are stored at low temperature in order to improve rooting ability via reducing rooting inhibitors that occur in dormant cuttings which were taken during dormant seasons (late fall or early winter). So, declining in rooting inhibitors has been observed in the hardwood cuttings of deciduous trees and Vitis spp which were subjected to low temperature for around 2-6 months. Consequently, rooting was improved in these species. Also, cold storage of cuttings of some coniferous trees increased rooting at a high rate. Other factors like cultivar and storage method may interact with cold storage duration and temperature degree as well. This review article outlines the information of the studies that have been obtained as a result of cold storage of the cuttings of different species
International audienceGetting feedback from real users in the early prototyping stage plays an important role in risk management for the development of an AI satellite supervision system. In this work, we apply the WOz approach to simulate the role of AI in the system, which allows the application designer to evaluate the prototype before the development is finished. In this paper, we first detail three different use cases and explain how the WOz can be used to validate user workflow and address specific evaluation needs in the AI system design. In addition, we propose a web-based platform to enable the generic use of WOz in different scenarios. Our platform allows for remote monitoring and control of the user interface. More importantly, instead of hard-coding each use case independently, our platform is reusable in different scenarios by allowing the application designer to easily set up the required configurations.
The unit value of a commodity that Michio Morishima's method and its variations enable to determine correctly, is the sum of the value of the commodities it contains (inputs) and the quantity of labor required for its production. However, goods are sold at their market production price only when they meet a solvent social need that involves the entire economy with its interconnections between the different industrial sectors. This condition gives full meaning to Marx's fundamental equalities, which derive from the law of value and constitute invariants that apply to the economy as a whole. These equalities are necessary to determine market production prices. We demonstrate that they also enable to solve the transformation problem for a simple reproduction system without fixed capital by starting from Morishima's formalism and returning to a formalism closer to that used by Marx.
Modulating the Surface Properties of Lithium Niobate Nanoparticles by Multifunctional Coatings Using Water-in-Oil Microemulsions
International audienceInorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as promising tools in biomedical applications, owing to their inherent physicochemical properties and their ease of functionalization. In all potential applications, the surface functionalization strategy is a key step to ensure that NPs are able to overcome the barriers encountered in physiological media, while introducing specific reactive moieties to enable post-functionalization. Silanization appears as a versatile NP-coating strategy, due to the biocompatibility and stability of silica, thus justifying the need for robust and well controlled silanization protocols. Herein, we describe a procedure for the silica coating of harmonic metal oxide NPs (LiNbO3, LNO) using a water-in-oil microemulsion (W/O ME) approach. Through optimized ME conditions, the silanization of LNO NPs was achieved by the condensation of silica precursors (TEOS, APTES derivatives) on the oxide surface, resulting in the formation of coated NPs displaying carboxyl (LNO@COOH) or azide (LNO@N3) reactive moieties. LNO@COOH NPs were further conjugated to an unnatural azido-containing small peptide to obtain silica-coated LNO NPs (LNO@Talys), displaying both azide and carboxyl moieties, which are well suited for biomedical applications due to the orthogonality of their surface functional groups, their colloidal stability in aqueous medium, and their anti-fouling properties
Voltaire on Liberty
International audienceThis article sets forth Voltaire's philosophy of liberty. Contrary to generally accepted readings, which take Voltaire at face value rather than considering the environment in which he wrote, Voltaire had a clear normative political thought. He was an early proponent of rule of law, ordered liberty, freedom of conscience and expression, and the right to prudent rebellion against tyranny. At the root of his political theory lay a rejection of slavery, and hence of all forms of subjugation
International audienceThe increase in socio-educational problems has led the school authorities in the canton of Fribourg (Switzerland) to promote a law that formally institutes the presence of social workers in compulsory schools. This article describes their profile, examines their responsibilities, their activities and the relationships they have with actors inside and outside schools. The data collected are analysed in the light of Donnay and Charlier’s (2008) model of professional identity and highlight the diversity of profiles, contexts and situations in which professionals are involved. They underline the need to see social workers as people who are able to adjust to the diversity of needs of each other.L’augmentation des problèmes socio-éducatifs a conduit les autorités scolaires du canton de Fribourg (Suisse) à promouvoir une loi qui institue la présence de travailleurs sociaux dans les écoles obligatoires.
