Performance study of spiral Darrieus water rotor with V-shaped blades
International audienceBecause of the excessive consumption of fossil fuels, the world has begun suffering from the depleting of those sources and wide environmental problems. Hydraulic energy, considered as unlimited and non-detrimental, has become the best refuge to supply world demand while protecting the planet. Above all vertical axis water turbine, for their low cost and independency on water direction, Darrieus turbine takes the advantage to be more suitable for some implementation. Thus, various studies have been carried out to improve its efficiency. This study emphasizes on the effect of the blade chord ratio on a spiral Darrieus water rotor performance which has not been two much explored. An experimental static and dynamic tests realized in an irrigation canal were performed with a 3D printed spiral Darrieus rotor. With the intention of the performances betterment, four spiral Darrieus rotors having a chord ratio equal to 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1, respectively, were tested through numerical simulations using the ANSYS FLUENT 17.0 software. Based on the numerical study, it is provided that the rotor with chord ratio of 0.5 was the optimum. In fact, it gives maximum power coefficient of 0.188 at a tip speed ratio equal to 0.71. The obtained findings present an interesting data that could provide the hydrodynamic characteristics of the water flow for the engineers and designers to improve the performance of the spiral Darrieus rotor

International audienceOpposition to offshore wind energy can cause major delays in the deployment of this technology, possibly compromising ambitious national strategies for increasing the generation of electricity to meet the net zero emissions target. However, shifting the perspective to the technology in full – from manufacturing to siting – can shed light on competing pathways where opposition coexists with acceptance, and provides a fuller understanding of place-based dependency dynamics. To apply this research agenda, this article presents a case study of France, where the first offshore wind farm is yet to be launched in 2025, in the midst of a growing controversy over the local impacts of the technology. However, France has also become a major manufacturing site for turbine and nacelle manufacturing, accounting for one-third of European industrial capacity. We use insights from social acceptance studies to offer an explanation for these contradictory paths. We study the role of scale in the social conflicts over offshore wind, showing the influence of wider place-based dependencies in the incentives hindrances to legitimacy for this technology. On the one side, local opponents to offshore wind farms deny their legitimacy on the grounds of their inadequacy within the inherited and centralized French energy system dominated by nuclear energy. Meanwhile, the development of manufacturing of offshore wind components is not questioned, and even benefits from a large support from local stakeholders.
International audienceIn this article, we want show that it is practically possible to use Industry 4.0 technologies for lean manufacturing wastes hunting. We have developed and tested a system based on a Pi 5MP 1080P camera and a Raspberry Pi card to provide information on the presence of waiting times during operation of a production system. Testing indicate that the system is able to measure waiting time with an absolute error of 2.13 seconds or 3.59 seconds depending if measurement is made with fixed or moving objects. The system is also able to detect the presence of an object with 89% accuracy and 100% precision. His architecture allows an extension of its development for pattern recognition. In view of the irreversible arrival of Industry 4.0 in production environments, we believe that the work presented in this article is also proof that Industry 4.0 and lean manufacturing are two complementary practices at the service of the productivity of manufacturing companies.

A Go/No-Go Decision-Making Model Based on Risk and Multi-Criteria Techniques for Project Selection
International audienceThe realization of infrastructures and the deployment of processes can follow project formalism. Generally, a project goes through a design and a realization phase. Between these two phases, there is a crucial milestone: Launching the project. Making this decision is not easy at all, and constitutes a real problem-- the main reasons to this are the numerous numbers of criteria (for technical, economic, social, environmental dimensions) and risks in the sense of feared events. Criteria and risks are most of the time not considered due to lack of time (for formalization) and the difficulty to handle them. The objective of this paper is to propose a relevant approach to make the decision of launching the project or not. The proposal outlined is innovative in that it can consider indicators based on several appropriate criteria, the associated risks, and their ways of management. The fact of considering several criteria and risks increases the probability of making the good decision

Desirability of Reduced mass Concept, Conflicting CODATA Values of some Constants: Variants of Fine structure constant and Rydberg constant Equations: Reduced mass, fine structure constant and Rydberg constant.
Thank you the opportunity to publish the preprint. It was very difficult in providing answer and needed actions when prompted. Background: The desirability of the use of the reduced mass concept as opposed to the rest mass seems to give conflicting results. Objectives: To derive variants of the equation of the Rydberg constant, fine structure constant, and wave number that relate with the Rydberg constant; Methods: The research is theoretical in nature. Results: The Rydberg constant (R∞) equations derived in this research are variants of each other and of those known in the literature; this is also applicable to the fine structure constant (a). The values of R∞ range between 10973731.6 and 1097373.89 /m for the rest mass case, while for the reduced mass case, the range is between 10966253.06 and 1096784.63 /m; regarding a, the derived equations gave results that are the same. The wave number was related to R∞ at the atomic level for the first time. The number showed a trend with the square of the atomic number, similar to the square of the average ionisation energy. Conclusion: The use of rest mass and reduced mass gives conflicting values for physical constants. Other variants of the equation for R∞ may be determined in the future.
