Fatigue evaluation of metallic components based on chaotic characteristics of second harmonic generation signal

    Get PDF
In the nonlinear ultrasonic technique, the nonlinear received signal, such as second harmonic generation (SHG) signal in higher harmonic experiments, is complicated and non-stationary time series which reflects the fatigue damage of metal components. To effectively evaluate the fatigue damage of metal components, especially the earlier fatigue damage, the chaos and fractal theory are proposed to analyze the received signal of higher harmonic experiments. Chaotic characteristics, for example Lyapunov exponent, correlation dimension and Kolmogorov entropy, are extracted to evaluate the fatigue damage. Experiments results indicate that chaotic characteristics can reasonably characterize and evaluate the fatigue state of beams, which the variation trend of chaotic characteristics has a close relationship with fatigue crack propagation. Furthermore, chaotic characteristics are very sensitive to earlier fatigue damage of used connecting rods, especially the Lyapunov exponent. Therefore, chaos and fractal theory could effectively extract the nonlinear received signals, and chaotic characteristics could reasonably evaluate the fatigue damage state of metal components

Research on singular spectrum decomposition and its application to rotor failure detection

    Get PDF
As an important part of rotating machinery, a healthy rotor is critical to ensuring optimal working conditions of the entire system. Considering that the vibration signal of rotor consists of different frequency components when the failure arises, a novel rotor failure detection method based on singular spectrum decomposition (SSD) is presented. The original vibration signal is adaptively decomposed into a number of singular spectrum components (SSCs) by the SSD method. Then, energy separation algorithm (ESA) is adopted to demodulate each singular spectrum component. Finally, the SSD-ESA time-frequency spectrum can be obtained and the fault features contained in the SSD-ESA time-frequency spectrum can be identified to determine the fault types. The effectiveness of SSD for harmonic separation was assessed through tones separation analyses, the results show that SSD is able to separate more harmonic pairs of different amplitude ratios than empirical mode decomposition (EMD). Furthermore, three simulations of multi-component signals were designed to investigate the use of SSD for signal decomposition. The SSD method was then applied to detect signatures caused by rotor oil film whirl in experimental signals and compared to both EMD and ensemble EMD (EEMD). The simulated analysis results reflect that SSD shows superiority to EMD and EEMD in inhibiting mode mixing and extracting the time-varying frequency components. The experimental analysis results demonstrate that the SSD based rotor failure detection method is an alternative method under both constant and variable speed conditions

The effects of structural parameters on excitation force of airflow vibration piezoelectric generator

    Get PDF
In order to meet the requirements of airflow vibration piezoelectric generator, and solve the critical issue of stable excitation force, the key is to effectively control structure sensitive parameters. The range of structural parameters of airflow excitation device are optimized by simplified orthogonal test. The result shows that corresponding to different resonator lengths, it approximates a linear increasing trend between the amplitude of excitation force and airflow velocity, and the greater length owns the smaller slope, and vice versa. It is relatively complex for the space and ring gaps, too big or too small gap would make the amplitude smaller or even no waveform formed. The length of resonator is the main factor impacting on the frequency of excitation sound pressure, and the frequency decreases with the increase of the length, presenting an inverse relationship, and the space and ring gaps have less effect on the frequency. Therefore, for high airflow velocity, the stable excitation force of high amplitude and frequency can be obtained by short resonator. In addition, reasonable space and ring gaps are also important for ensuring bigger amplitude of excitation sound pressure. The resulting sensitive parameter values of sound excitation device can be used as references for engineering design

    Get PDF
Robotic drilling technology for aircraft flexible assembly has challenges and is under active investigation. In this work, a robotic drilling end-effector is designed and its normal adjustment system is dynamically modeled for comparison of advanced control strategies in terms of position tracking precision and dynamic quality. Three control algorithms with different computational complexity are proposed and compared: Based on computation torque control method first, a proportional and differential controller (PDC) and a sliding mode controller (SMC) are proposed respectively, and then is a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC). Simulation results show that the SMC has higher precision and a more excellent tracking property than the PDC of which the proportional and derivative gains have been optimally tuned using a modified Ziegler-Nichols’ (Z-N) tuning methods. An experiment platform is established in MatLab xPC environment to validate the effect of the SMC and MRAC. The experiment results show that the MRAC delivers a better robust performance that allows adaptiveness to the nonlinear factors such as disturbance and parameter variations than the SMC

Vibration analysis using wavelet transform and fuzzy logic for shaft misalignment

    Get PDF
In most of rotating kind of machinery, misalignment is commonly observed defect. Though machines are installed to zero-zero aligned condition in initial stage, in due course of run time operation misalignment get introduced due thermal distortion, asymmetry of forces exerted and inadequate assembly of parts. This paper presents a method of misalignment prediction from output vibration signal which is based on combined DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) and Fuzzy Logic approach. DWT helps in multilevel decomposition of vibration signal to understand where and at what instant misalignment occurs. This involves selection of mother wavelet. The FIS (Fuzzy Inference System) is combined with DWT to predict degree of misalignment present. An inclusion of FIS has improved prediction accuracy of Degree of Misalignment (DoM) which has claimed error less than one percent (1 %)

Differential quadrature method (DQM) for studying initial imperfection effects and pre- and post-buckling vibration of plates

    Get PDF
The effects of initial geometric imperfection and pre- and post-buckling deformations on vibration of isotropic rectangular plates under uniaxial compressive in-plane load have been studied. The differential equations of plate motions, using the Mindlin theory and Von-Karman stress-strain relations for large deformations, were extracted. The solution of nonlinear differential equations was assumed as the summation of dynamic and static solutions. Due to a large static plate deflection as compared with its vibration amplitude, the differential equations were solved in two steps. First, the static equations were solved using the differential quadrature method and the arc-length strategy. Next, considering small vibration amplitude about the deformed shape and eliminating nonlinear terms, the natural frequencies were extracted using the differential quadrature method. The results for different initial geometric imperfection and different boundary conditions reflect the impact of the mentioned factors on the natural frequencies of plates

Study on the dynamics of two-degree-of-freedom system with variable stiffness magnetic isolator

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel variable stiffness isolator designed by magnetic springs in parallel with linear positive stiffness spring. Firstly, the two-degree-of-freedom vibration system model with variable stiffness magnetic isolator is established. The amplitude frequency characteristic equation of the system is derived based on the multi-harmonic method, and the corresponding curve of the relationship between the amplitude and frequency is given. The influence of the current on the curve is researched. Results showed that there are two pseudo-resonant peaks in the amplitude–frequency curve, and one is in the low frequency band, the other exists in higher frequency band. The first peak does not exhibit the frequency shift, but the second one bends to the natural frequency obviously. With the increasing of the current, the peaks decrease and the backbone curve changes greatly for the second resonant crest. The Lyapunov exponent curve around the resonant frequency is calculated. It is shown that there is chaotic parameter region for the system, and chaos can be controlled with the variable stiffness magnetic vibration isolator according to this research, which is beneficial to the design of nonlinear vibration isolation system

    Get PDF
In a liquefied nature gas (LNG) plant, a large concrete framed structure supporting multi-units of heavy compressors was designed in accordance with ACI 318-08 code requirements and ASCE 7-05seismic loads. When applied to new structures, provisions of ACI 318 are intended to provide Life Safety (LS) performance for the Design Basis Earthquake (DBE). Due to the important function of the compressors, this study will perform a seismic assessment of the Table Top Pedestal to assure adequate capacity of preventing collapse from Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE) and only having limited structural damage under a moderate (MOD) 20%@50 years earthquake event. In this study, the Linear Dynamic Procedure (LDP) of ASCE 41-13 is used for the seismic performance evaluation of the table top structure. The structural modeling parameters and acceptance criteria of structural performances are based on Chapter 10 of ASCE 41-13. Soil-structural interaction and P-Delta effects are considered in the analysis process. The response spectra of the three levels of seismic hazards of DBE, MCE and MOD earthquake were developed for response spectra analysis. The procedures presented in this study can be used as a general guideline for Performance-Based Design of most reinforced concrete structures located in industrial plants

    Get PDF
Fractional order control schemes are being actively investigated for various systems. Fractional order concept is incorporated in integral (I), proportional integral (PI), proportional derivative (PD) or proportional integral derivative (PID) controller to investigate the performance of different state variables of the system. These techniques are often used for the purpose of technology transfer but very scanty research has so far been conducted using state space approach. The current investigation is initiated to observe the effect of fractional order controller using state space approach for the system's performance while tracking the position and regulating the speed of a linear servo cart system. Integer order controller based on proportional derivative (PD) approach is also shown for comparison. Simulation responses are presented and analyzed, in this investigation. The superiority of state space approach based fractional order controller is shown in the results. The paper contains a literature review on several control techniques used to control position and speed of a servo-cart system. An over view of mathematical modeling of servo cart system and a description of a proposed fractional controller is presented in this paper. A brief description of integer order control scheme is also presented. Simulated results are compared and discussed for both fractional order controller and integer order controller at the end of this paper
