Damage identification research on beam structures by integrating multiple modal parameters

    Get PDF
A new damage identification method with a fusion index to locate the damage position and identify the damage extent of beam structures is presented by integrating the modal strain energy and natural frequency sensitivity. The modal strain energy, which is with the limitation on obtaining the damage extent, is adopted to locate the damage position with avoiding the interference of structure itself. The natural frequency sensitivity, which is with false detection and interference happening when solely used, is adopted for identifying the damage extent. In order to further improve the precision of the damage quantification, additional masses are added on the beam structure to obtain more information about the natural frequency sensitivity. Then, the fusion index for damage identification is established through combining the modal strain energy and the natural frequency sensitivity before and after adding masses on beam structures. The results obtained by finite element analysis and experimental tests show that the presented method can locate and quantify damages on beam structures in an accurate and convenient way

Automatic condition monitoring of electromechanical system based on MCSA, spectral kurtosis and SOM neural network

Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis play the most important role in industrial applications. The gearbox system is an essential component of mechanical system in fault identification and classification domains. In this paper, we propose a new technique which is based on the Fast-Kurtogram method and Self Organizing Map (SOM) neural network to automatically diagnose two localized gear tooth faults: a pitting and a crack. These faults could have very different diagnostics; however, the existing diagnostic techniques only indicate the presence of local tooth faults without being able to differentiate between a pitting and a crack. With the aim to automatically diagnose these two faults, a dynamic model of an electromechanical system which is a simple stage gearbox with and without defect driven by a three phase induction machine is proposed, which makes it possible to simulate the effect of pitting and crack faults on the induction stator current signal. The simulated motor current signal is then analyzed by using a Fast-Kurtogram method. Self-organizing map (SOM) neural network is subsequently used to develop an automatic diagnostic system. This method is suitable for differentiating between a pitting and a crack fault

    Get PDF
Accurate calculation on circumferential natural frequencies of stator structure in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is very important for predicting the vibration and noise of PMSM. The analytical modal formula for the stator structure in PMSM is proposed, starting from the mathematical displacement model of cylindrical shell, then deriving the analytical formula for the stator structure. Firstly, finite element method (FEM) is applied to analyze the circumferential natural frequencies of cylindrical shells with different length, wall thickness, mean diameter, diameter-thickness ratio, size and installation position of terminal box. The influences on circumferential natural frequencies of cylindrical shells are studied. Furthermore, a new analytical formula considering diameter-thickness ratio for calculating circumferential natural frequencies of cylindrical shells is developed. Compared with the results of FEM, the correctness of the analytical formula is verified. Then, novel analytical formulas considering stiffness errors are proposed to calculate the circumferential natural frequencies of stator core and motor case. Compared with the results of FEM, the effectiveness of analytical method is validated. Finally, a new analytical formula considering diameter-thickness ratio, stiffness errors, existence of terminal box and mutual constraints is presented to calculate the circumferential natural frequencies of stator structure. Compared with the results of FEM and experimental method, the relative errors are respective within |4.43 %| and |3.38 %|. The validity of analytical formula is confirmed

A weak fault diagnosis method for rotating machinery based on compressed sensing and stochastic resonance

    Get PDF
Vibration signals used for rotating machinery fault diagnosis often constitute large amount of data. It is a big challenge to extract faults feature information from these data. Recently, a new sampling framework called compressed sensing has been proposed, which enables the recovery from a small set of measured data if the signals are sparse or compressible. In reality, the sparseness of the signals is not very well due to noise, so it is difficult and unavailing to recover the whole signal. Thus, a new mechanical fault diagnosis method is proposed in this paper. First, the machine fault vibration signals are pretreated by stochastic resonance. By this way, the fault signal drowned by noise is amplified and the sparseness of the signals is enhanced, which make it possible to apply compressed sensing. Second, fault features are extracted directly from the compressed data without recovering completely, which reduces the dimensionality of the measurement data and the complexity of algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by the experiments

Numerical analysis of hard rock tunnel excavated by double shield TBM based on CWFS model

    Get PDF
In order to study the mechanical response of a hard rock tunnel excavated by double shield tunnel boring machine (DS-TBM), a numerical method was introduced to simulate the TBM excavating process. The failure modes of surrounding rock mass described based on the cohesion weakening and frictional strengthening (CWFS) Mohr-Coulomb strain-softening criterion. The characteristics of stress field and plastic zone on the cross and longitudinal section of the tunnel were analyzed in detail, and the results were compared with those in the intrinsic condition (when TBM model is not activated). The simulation results indicate that the stress paths at the vault are relatively simple, and the stress concentration caused by excavation unloading is obviously reduced by lining and backfill grouting, while the sidewall is less disturbed by the excavation of TBM. The invert experiences three unloading processes, due to excavation, the contact between the rear shield and the bottom of surrounding rock, as well as backfill grouting at gap between the lining and the rock mass. The vault has a larger plastic zone than the invert, attributing to the geometrical difference between the cutter-head and the front shield, as well as the conicity of the front and rear shields. The area of plastic zones gradually increases along the tunnel route, but it becomes stable after the rear shield

Numerical simulation of hydraulic fracturing in transversely isotropic rock masses based on PFC-2D

    Get PDF
In order to make a better understanding of the hydraulic fracturing in transversely isotropic rock masses, the modified particle flow modeling method was used by embedding the smooth joint models within an area of certain thickness, and the optimized fluid-mechanical coupling mechanism was applied in hydraulic fracturing modeling. On this basis, the influence of the injection rates, in-situ stress ratios and inclination angles of the bedding planes on the breakdown pressure and propagation of the hydraulic fractures was analyzed. The simulation indicated that: 1) Excessive small or large injection rates would lead to the increase of the breakdown pressure of the hydraulic fractures. 2) Under different inclination angles of the bedding planes, the crack breakdown pressure increased linearly with the increasing of the in-situ stress ratios. And under conditions of different in-situ stress ratios, the crack breakdown pressure changed as a ‘wave’ type with the increasing inclination angles of bedding planes. 3) Both the in-situ stress ratios and the inclination angle of bedding planes affected the propagation of the hydraulic fractures. The existence of the bedding planes would induce the hydraulic fractures to propagate along the bedding planes. The large inclinations of the bedding planes would cause the hydraulic fractures to keep propagating with the direction of maximum principal stress

Macroscopic and microscopic simulation of silo granular flow based on improved multi-element model

    Get PDF
In the PFC simulation of silo granular discharge, spherical particles were used in the traditional model, which could not accurately reflect macroscopic and mesoscopic mechanism during discharge of wheat, rice and other particles with non-spherical shapes. This research provides an improved multi-element model consisting of clump elements and ball elements. The model uses clump elements to simulate non-spherical grain particles and ball elements to simulate dust particles. The numerical simulation was carried out with the improved multi-element model, and the results are compared with the traditional simulation which uses the spherical ball elements and the experiment of grain discharge. It demonstrates that: (1) In terms of the normal wall pressure, the dynamic pressure fluctuation in flow with improved multi-element model is more gradual, and the discharge process lasts longer, the normal pressure simulation results are more accurate than the traditional model. (2) In terms of the meso-structure of the granular material, compared with traditional spherical ball model, the material packing porosity of the improved multi-element model decreases and the coordination number increases, which is denser and in consistent with the actual situation. (3) Particle shape would affect the meso-mechanical behavior of particles. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared with the traditional spherical ball model, the contact forces in the improved multi-element model increases, and the distribution of contact force chains is more uniform and denser; several arching force chains could be clearly seen in the improved multi-element model, which clearly reflects the dynamic change law of the instantaneous arch. The improved multi-element model established in this paper further improves the accuracy of simulation and reflects the dynamic changes of the normal pressure on the silo wall, granular material structure and meso-mechanical parameters during grain discharge

The stability analysis of blasting excavation in short distance on water diversion tunnel underpassing Jinduicheng Molybdenum Mine

    Get PDF
To investigate effect induced by blasting in Jinduicheng molybdenum mine on the Dongchuan river diversion tunnel, the tunnel vibration has been monitored. According to the actual conditions, the corresponding numerical simulation is performed in FLAC3D, and dynamic response of the lining and surrounding rock of the diversion tunnel caused by blasting load is analyzed. The variation of vibration velocity in the later stage of tunnel under the action of existing blasting scale is predicted, when the vertical distance between blasting source and diversion tunnel is 50 m, the velocity of tunnel vibration reaches the critical value. The blasting scheme of mine production can be modified according to the practical distance between the explosion source and the diversion tunnel

Dynamic responses of base-isolated concrete liquid storage structure under two types of resonances

    Get PDF
One important characteristic of base-isolated liquid storage structure (LSS) is that the vibration periods of structure and liquid are different, namely, there are two kinds of periods in the system. As a result, structure or liquid resonance may occurs under external excitation. In order to reflect the nonlinear characteristics of liquid sloshing, subsonic potential-based element is used to simulate the liquid. The governing equations of liquid field and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) equations are established; the initial and boundary conditions of liquid sloshing in dynamic coordinate system are obtained. Harmonic functions used to conduct time history analysis are generated by the first order vibration frequencies of structure and liquid respectively. The dynamic responses of base-isolated rectangular liquid storage structure (RLSS) under two types of resonance are studied comparatively. Results show that when the external excitation frequency is equal to the first order vibration frequency of isolated structure or liquid sloshing, wall tensile stress, structure displacement, base shear force and liquid sloshing wave height will appear resonance amplification phenomenon. The dynamic responses of structure itself caused by structure resonance are greater than that of liquid resonance; while the liquid sloshing wave height caused by liquid resonance is greater than that of structure resonance. Under structure resonance, the wall is prone to be cracked; and under liquid resonance, the liquid velocity field will become unusually violent, and liquid overflow will be caused easily

Improved genetic algorithm for parameters identification of cart-double pendulum

    Get PDF
Cart-double pendulum is a typical nonlinear under-actuated mechanical device, and highly sensitive to modeling error and external disturbance. Motion control of double pendulum is a very complex and difficult task, especially when it turns to real-time situation because a minor difference between kinetic model and actual device could lead to the necessity of significant adjustments according to control laws comparing to the usage of simulation controller. The use of accurate kinetic model is the key factor for fast transition from simulation to real-time operation. An improved genetic algorithm (IGA), which includes orthogonal experiment design, feedback mutation, pairing operation based on Hamming distance, and variable precision crossover operation, is introduced to identify the physical parameters of a double pendulum. The improved genetic algorithm (IGA) can overcome the shortcomings of the traditional genetic algorithm (TGA), for instance, premature convergence, and get results closer to the global optimal solution. The results of experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method
