Corrosion Inhibitive Effect of Ocimum Gratissimum Extract on Zinc-Aluminium Alloy in Hydrochloric Acid
The inhibitive effect of Ocimum gratissimum by seed extract on the corrosion of zinc-aluminium (ZA) alloy in 2 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution has been studied using gravimetric methods. Inhibition increases with concentration of extract but decreases with temperature. This observation implies that Ocimum gratissimum seed extract is an effective and non toxic inhibitor of the corrosion of zinc-aluminium alloy. Adsorption of the extract on the surface obeyed the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The calculated rate constant (k) shows a first order kinetics in the absence and presence of the inhibitor. The kinetic parameter B, measured for the reaction has a high negative value which implies that Ocimum gratissimum becomes more effective as the temperature increases. Synergistic effect of halide additives shows an increase in the efficiency of the extract. However synergism parameter shows that synergism of halide additives decreases with increased concentration of inhibitor
Geophysical and geotechnical characterisation of foundation beds at Kuchiyaku, Kuje Area, Abuja, Nigeria
The geoelectrical and geotechnical parameters of foundation soils in Kuchiyaku, Kuje area, Abuja, Nigeria were determined. The exercise was aimed at evaluating the competence of near surface geomaterials to bear civil engineering loads. The study combined 20 Schlumberger Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES), in-situ tests involving 19 Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), 15 Cone Penetration Tests (CPT), and multiple Atterberg's laboratory tests (liquid and plastic limits). The VES interpretations delineated topsoil, weathered basement and the fractured/fresh bedrock within the study area. The layer resistivity ranges from 199 to 1947 Ohm-m for topsoil, 32 to 540 Ohm-m for weathered basement and 495 to 16986 Ohm-m for fresh/fractured bedrock. High resistivity values (>500 Ohm-m) suggest geotechnical competence. Maximum depth to bedrock is about 31m. The cone penetration probed maximum depth of 6.4m at CPT 13 and 10m depth was reached by the standard penetration test via sample holes. The geophysical interpretation results correlated well with the results of CPT, SPT and laboratory Atterberg's tests in the study area. High CPT and SPT values have direct correlation with high resistivity values where there is no much differential in soil fluid content, while areas with high liquid and plastic limits correlate with resistivity low zones, apparently suggesting high groundwater saturation. The Atterberg's limits observed from borehole samples revealed useful knowledge of the soils' engineering properties. The investigation reveals that the near surface foundation materials in the area is generally geotechnically competent
EEG signal classification for real-time brain-computer interface applications: A review
Brain-computer interface (BCI) is linking the brain activity to computer, which allows a
person to control devices directly with his brain waves and without any use of his muscles.
Recent advances in real-time signal processing have made BCI a feasible alternative for
controlling robot and for communication as well. Controlling devices using BCI is a crucial
aid for people suffering from severe disabilities and more than that, BCIs can replace
human to control robots working in dangerous or uncongenial situations. Effective BCIs

Using Wearable Sensors for Remote Healthcare Monitoring System
Recent technological advances in wireless communications and wireless sensor networks have enabled the
design of low-cost, intelligent, tiny, and lightweight medical sensor nodes that can be strategically placed on
human body, create a wireless body area network (WBAN) to monitor various physiological vital signs for a
long period of time and providing real-time feedback to the user and medical staff. WBANs promise to revolutionize health monitoring. In this paper, medical sensors were used to collect physiological data from
patients and transmit it to Intelligent Personal digital Assistant (IPDA) using ZigBee/IEEE802.15.4 standard
and to medical server using 3G communications. We introduced priority scheduling and data compression
into the system to increase transmission rate of physiological critical signals which improve the bandwidth
utilization. It also extends the life time of hand-held personal server by reducing power consumption during
transmission
Vision-based hand posture detection and recognition for Sign Language—A study
Unlike general gestures, Sign Languages (SLs) are highly structured so that it provides an appealing test bed for understanding more general principles for hand shape, location and motion trajectory. Hand posture shape in other words static gestures detection and recognition is crucial in SLs and plays an important role within the duration of the motion trajectory. Vision-based hand shape recognition can be accomplished using three approaches 3D hand modelling, appearance-based methods and hand shape analysis. In this survey paper, we show that extracting features from hand shape is so essential during recognition stage for applications such as SL translators

Evaluating the effect of voice activity detection in isolated Yoruba word recognition system
This paper discusses and evaluates the effect of voice Activity Detection (VAD) in an isolated Yoruba word recognition system (IYWRS). The word database used in this paper are collected from 22 speakers by repeating the numbers 1 to 9 three times each. A hybrid configuration of Mel-Frequency Cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) have been used to extract the features of the speech samples. Artificial Neural Network algorithms are then used to classify these features. An overall accuracy of about 60% has been achieved from the two proposed feature extraction methods
Family characteristics, students' reading habits, environment and students' academic performance in Nigeria
The paper examined family background factors that affect students' academic achievement in institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. With the use of structured questionnaire, data were collected from 110 first-degree final year students using random sampling and analysed through multiple linear regression techniques. It was found that student's academic performance was positively influenced by student's parental level of education, maternal income level, age, income of the student and number of hours allocated for reading on daily basis. Those students who spent more hours reading their books daily were found performing better than those who spent lesser hours. The hypothesis that parental educational level impacted positive effects on students' academic performance was confirmed valid for the country while effects of parental occupation and parental income were mixed. The major finding of the paper was that higher educational attainment and income status of parents were essential factors contributing to high academic record of students of tertiary institutions. It was, therefore, recommended that policy that enforces higher education advancement for all parents should be enforced in Nigeria
