    A Novel Document Ranking Algorithm That Supports Mobile Healthcare Information Access Effectiveness

    This study presented DROPT; an acronym for Document ranking Optmization algorithm approach, a new idea for the effectiveness of meaningful retrieval results from the information source. Proposed method extracted the frequency of query keyword terms that appears within the user context of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) systems on HIV/AIDS content related-documents. The SMS messages were analyzed and then classified, with the aim of constructing a corpus of SMS related to HIV/AIDS. This study presented a novel framework of Information Retrieval Systems (IRS) based on the proposed algorithm. The developed DROPT procedure was used as an evaluation measure. This “Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TFIDF)” method was applied to obtain the experimental result that was found promising in ranking documents not only the order in which the relevant documents were retrieved, but also both the terms of the relevant documents in feedback and the terms of the irrelevant documents in feedback might be useful for relevance feedback, especially to define its fitness function (mean weight)

    Analysis of the ECG signal using SVD-based parametric modelling technique

    A new parametric modeling technique for the analysis of the ECG signal is presented in this paper. This approach involves the projection of the excitation signal on the right eigenvectors of the impulse response matrix of the LPC filter. Each projected value is then weighted by the corresponding singular value, leading to an approximated sum of exponentially damped sinusoids (EDS). A two-stage procedure is then used to estimate the EDS model parameters. Prony's algorithm is first used to obtain initial estimates of the model, while the Gauss-Newton method is applied to solve the non-linear least-square optimisation problem. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated on abnormal clinical ECG data selected from the MIT-BIH database using objective measures of distortion. A good compression ratio per beat has been obtained using the proposed algorithm which is quite satisfactory when compared to other techniques

The privacy, integrity and confidentiality of a patient’s data are key factors to be considered in the transmission of medical information for use by authorised health-care personnel. Mobile communication has enabled medical consultancy, treatment, drug administration and the provision of laboratory results to take place outside the hospital. With the implementation of electronic patient records and the Internet and Intranets, medical information sharing amongst relevant health-care providers was made possible. But the vital issue in this method of information sharing is security: the patient’s privacy, as well as the confidentiality and integrity of the health-care information system, should not be compromised. We examine various ways of ensuring the security and privacy of a patient’s electronic medical information in order to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of the information

    Design and evaluation of a pressure based typing biometric authentication system

    Although a variety of authentication devices to verify a user’s identity are in use today for computer access control, passwords have been and probably would remain the preferred method. Password authentication is an inexpensive and familiar paradigm that most operating systems support. However, this method is vulnerable to intruder access. This is largely due to the wrongful use of passwords by many users and to the unabated simplicity of the mechanism which makes such system susceptible to unsubstantiated intruder attacks. Methods are needed, therefore, to either enhance or reinforce existing password authentication techniques. There are two possible approaches to achieve this, namely by measuring the time between consecutive keystrokes “latency” or measuring the force applied on each keystroke. The pressure-based biometric authentication system (PBAS) has been designed to combine these two approaches so as to enhance computer security. PBAS employs force sensors to measure the exact amount of force a user exerts while typing. Signal processing is then carried out to construct a waveform pattern for the password entered. In addition to the force, PBAS measures the actual timing traces, which are often referred to as “latency”. Two approaches to construct user typing pattern have been implemented with PBAS. First approach utilizes a waveform acquired for user keystroke pressure along with time between each keystroke “latency“ to create a unique user password typing pattern for authentication. An auto-regressive (AR) classifier is used for the pressure pattern, while a latency classifier is used for the time between keystrokes. The results of both classifiers are combined to authenticate the user typing pattern. The second approach combines the pressure and latency by creating a pattern of peak keystroke force and latency. By combining the force and time features other classifiers have been tested with PBAS, namely support vector machines (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). Figure 1 illustrates how these classifiers are integrated to develop the system. As compared to conventional keystroke biometric authentication systems, PBAS has employed a new approach by constructing a waveform pattern for the keystroke password. This pattern provides a more dynamic and consistent biometric characteristics of the user. It also eliminates the security threat posed by breaching the system through online network as the access to the system is only possible through the pressure sensor reinforced keyboard “biokeyboard”

    Studies on the life cycle and morphometrics of honeybees, Apis Mellifera adansonii (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in a Mangrove Area of Lagos, Nigeria

    The life cycle of the honeybee, Apis mellifera adansonii, was studied in mangrove area by monitoring the developmental stages and morphology of the castes. It was observed that the fate of the eggs were predetermined at the onset leading to drones, queens or workers. It was also established that the three different castes (drone, queen and worker) exhibit similar patterns of complete metamorphoses. The mean developmental period of the drone from egg to adult stage was the longest (24.97±1.77 days, n = 60) followed by that of worker (20.22 ± 2.20 days, n = 60) and the queen (15.5 ± 2.08 days, n = 60) in that order. The body length and head capsule width varied within the different castes. The general pattern of the studied life cycle of A.mellifera adansonii in Mangrove area of Lagos is similar to A. mellifera scutellata and Africanized A. mellifera studied in other regions. It was concluded that the knowledge of the life cycle of A. mellifera adansonii by bee farmers in their locality may enhance their apicultural practices for better productivity

    AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF DECORATION ON PATRONAGE OF HOTELS IN ABEOKUTA METROPOLIS, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

    The study evaluated the effects of decoration on patronage of hotels in the Abeokuta metropolis. The specific objectives are to assess in economic characteristics of the hotel staff in the area of study. The types of interior and exterior decoration used by the als as well as the services provided, infrastructure and furnishing materials, including the maintenance capability and the attitude of staff respondent) towards the pattern of decoration of the hotels were also examined. A total of 200 questionnaires were administered 18 hotels purposively selected for the study. Findings revealed that majority of the hotel customer were within the active age of between 31-50 years. The findings also showed that most of the respondents were male (65%) and had formal education (100%). Chi square tests showed significant relationship between the effects of hotel decoration and socio-economic characteristics of the respondents. Xcal = 81.189 was greater than X' tab = 9.488 at the 5% significant level and df = 4, suggesting that patronage had a significant relationship with the effect of hotel decoration. There was also a significant relationship between the effects of decoration and services provided by the hotels as X2 calculate was 289.72 which was greater than Xfrom the table X2 = 3.841 at 5% level of significant and df = 1. Correlational analysis showed that there were positive correlation (r = 0.1416) between hotel decoration and patronage; this implies that a better decoration will bring higher patronage. This project concludes that the use of good interior decoration, sound renovations and general cleaning of the hotel surroundings encouraged patronage and contributed well to the success and development of the hotels, thereby increasing patronage and income

    Extensive biodegradation of Nigerian crude oil (Escravos light) by newly characterized yeast strains

    Because microbial degradation is known to be an efficient process in the in situ decontamination of oil-bearing environments, it is believed that development of effective bioremediation strategies will be aided by microbial sourcing of novel and competent hydrocarbon degraders with a broad and unusual substrate spectrum. Thus, in keeping with this objective, two Candida strains (MNI and MCI) isolated after a repeated batch enrichment technique were tested for their biodegradation potentials on Nigerian crude oil, Escravos light. Axenic cultures of strains MNI and MCI grew at a rate of 1.623 and 0.586 d-1, respectively, in mineral salts medium supplemented with 8.4 g L-1 of crude oil. Whereas strain MNI degraded aliphatic fractions by 97.6% and the aromatics by 74.61%, the corresponding values obtained for MCI were 97.2% and 67.29% during the 14-day incubation period. The gas chromatography (GC) fingerprinting of aliphatic fractions showed major degradation of heptadecane (C17), octadecane (C18), nonadecane (C19), eicosane (C20), undodecane (C21), tricosane (C23), hexacosane (C26), octacosane (C28), and nonacosane (C29) in less than 6 days, whereas nearly 100% of these fractions including the isoprenoid molecules was metabolized in 14 days. Among the aromatic fractions that were nearly eliminated during the cultivation period were naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthrene, chrysene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthrene, and benzo(a)pyrene. Intrestingly, substrate uptake studies showed that both strains grew very well on petroleum cuts, biphenyl, phenol, xylene, and quite a number of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including pyrene, phenanthrene, and anthracene

    Modeling of Human Upper Body for Sign Language Recognition

    Sign Language Recognition systems require not only the hand motion trajectory to be classified but also facial features, Human Upper Body (HUB) and hand position with respect to other HUB parts. Head, face, forehead, shoulders and chest are very crucial parts that can carry a lot of positioning information of hand gestures in gesture classification. In this paper as the main contribution, a fast and robust search algorithm for HUB parts based on head size has been introduced for real time implementations. Scaling the extracted parts during body orientation was attained using partial estimation of face size. Tracking the extracted parts for front and side view was achieved using CAMSHIFT [24]. The outcome of the system makes it applicable for real-time applications such as Sign Languages Recognition (SLR) systems
