CFD based parametric analysis of gas flow in a counter-flow wet scrubber system
Environmental protection measures regarding industrial emissions and tightened regulations for air pollution led to the selection of a counter-flow wet scrubber system based on applicability and economic considerations. The flow dynamics of gas transporting particulate matter and gaseous contaminants is a key factor which should be considered in the scrubber design. In this study, gas flow field were simulated using ANSYS Fluent computational fluids dynamic (CFD) software based on the continuity, momentum and k-ε turbulence model so as to obtain optimum design of the system, improve efficiency, shorten experimental, period and avoid dead zone. The result shows that the residuals have done a very good job of converging at minimum number of iterations and error of 1E-6. The velocity flow contours and vectors at the inlet, across the scrubbing chamber and the outlet shows a distributed flow and the velocity profiles have fully conformed to the recommended profile for turbulent flows in pipes. The total pressure within the scrubber cross-section is constant while the minimum and maximum pressure drops was obtained to be 0.30 pa and 3.03 pa which has conformed to the recommended pressure drop for wet scrubbers. From the results obtained, it can be deduced that the numerical simulation using CFD is an effective method to study the flow characteristics of a counter-flow wet scrubber system
Application of intelligent technique for development of Colpitts oscillator
In this paper, new method of Colpitts oscillator designing through combination of Genetic Algorithm and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been suggested. The Thevenin's resistors for the common base Colpitts oscillator are optimized through application of GA and ANN. The developed common base Colpitts oscillator has shortest transient time response and stable Direct Current (DC) stability in the long term operation. Involvement of GA and ANN successfully optimize between transient time response and steady state response of common base oscillator. Application of these two artificial intelligent techniques assist faster selection of optimizes components values such as resistance values during circuit development rather than conventional method which used intuition techniques to develop the circuit
An Assessment of the Impact of Mass Media in the Growth and Development of Tertiary Institutions in Delta State
The mass media are indispensable in every sphere of life. The media contribute a lot to the growth and development of tertiary institutions. The researchers used the agenda setting and development media theories as theoretical relevance for this study. This paper is therefore set to assess the impact of the mass media in the growth and development of Tertiary Institution in Delta State. The survey method and questionnaire were used as research design and instrument for gathering data respectively. A total of 300 (Three Hundred) sample size was drawn randomly from these three institution, i.e. 100 respondents each from each of the institutions. The findings revealed overwhelming impact of mass media in the growth and development of the three sampled tertiary institutions. Based on the findings, It was recommended among other things that Higher Institution authorities should always use the mass media to publicize their institutions, and the media on the other hand should be morally obliged to the plight of higher institutions by publishing and disseminating information concerning them on regular basis
Characterisation of pulverised palm kernel shell for sustainable waste diversification
The paper presents a report on the physico-thermal properties and elemental composition of pulverized palm kernel shell to enhance its use in engineering applications. Clean palm kernel shell were dried, milled and screened to obtain particles 0.23 mm mean diameter. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the physical and thermal properties of the pulverized palm kernel shell and its differential thermal analysis. Its elemental composition was determined by X-Ray Fluorescent analysis. Test results showed that pulverized palm kernel shell consist mainly of non-ferrous metals. Its bulk density was 560 kg/m3; specific gravity, 1.26. Its thermal properties were characterized by thermal conductivity of 0.68 W/m K; specific heat capacity, 1.98 kj/kg K, and phase change at 101.40C. The report established significant potentials in the diversification of palm kernel shell from waste to fuel in improved combustion systems and as a future element in biomaterial composites
Investigation of the characteristics of geoelectric field signals prior to earthquakes using adaptive STFT techniques
An earthquake is one of the most destructive natural disasters that can occur, often killing many people and causing large material losses. Hence, the ability to predict earthquakes may reduce the catastrophic effects caused by this phenomenon. The geoelectric field is a feature that can be used to predict earthquakes (EQs) because of significant changes in the amplitude of the signal prior to an earthquake. This paper presents a detailed analysis of geoelectric field signals of earthquakes which occurred in 2008 in Greece. In 2008, 12 earthquakes occurred in Greece. Five of them were recorded with magnitudes greater than Ms = 5R (5R), while seven of them were recorded with magnitudes greater than Ms = 6R (6R). In the analysis, the 1st significant changes of the geoelectric field signal are detected. Then, the signal is segmented and windowed. The adaptive short-time Fourier transform (adaptive STFT) technique is then applied to the windowed signal, and the spectral analysis is performed thereafter. The results show that the 1st significant changes of the geoelectric field prior to an earthquake have a significant amplitude frequency spectrum compared to other conditions, i.e. normal days and the day of the earthquake, which can be used as input parameters for earthquake prediction
Applicability of solar photo-Fenton process to the remediation of water polluted with pesticides
Staff PublicationThe applicability of solar photo-Fenton process to the degradation of three pesticides in pure and natural
waters was investigated in Fe(III)/H2O2/UV–Vis and Fe(III)/H2O2 UV–Vis oxidation systems at pH 2.8 and 7.2. The
pesticides concentrations were determined by HPLC analysis. Furthermore, total mineralization of the pesticides in
these systems was evaluated by monitoring the decreases in DOC concentrations with solar simulator irradiation
time by TOC analysis. The results obtained indicate that the spontaneous degradation due to solar illumination by
Fe3+/H2O2/UV–Vis system is more effective than Fe2+/ H2O2/UV–Vis system in Milli-Q water and river water at pH
2.8. This great enhancement in the pesticides degradation rate in the photo-Fenton reaction system Fe3+/H2O2/UV–
Vis compared to Fe2+/H2O2/UV–Vis systems at pH 2.8 is due to the higher rate of ·OH generation in this system in
Milli-Q water and river water (4.01 and 5.26 uM/min) compared to Fe2+/H2O2/UV–Vis systems 2.44 and 2.90
uM/min. respectively. At both pH values, the order of pesticides degradation was diuron > fenitrothion > fenarimol
which seems to be related with their solubility. Results obtained from this study makes it plausible to apply the
photo-Fenton process to the remediation of water polluted with toxic pesticide
Students satisfaction with academic library resources and services: the covenant university library experience
This study investigated students satisfaction with academic library resources and services. the objectives of the study was to find out whether the students are satisfied with the library resources and services or not. 500 copies of a designed questionnaire was administered to the students that used the library during the period of the study, out of which 473 was returned and used for analysis, this represented 94.6% response rate. The finding revealed that the students uses the library very often, they are satisfied with the library resources and services. It is recommended that Covenant University Library should keep on maintaining the high level of library resources and services as it leads to students (users) satisfaction, there is need for the library to improve on its resources and services to users as a world class University. It is t of Library and Information Centres should pay more attention to quality and library resources and services for the benefits of library users and the image of the librar

The problem of determining simultaneously the model order and coefficient of an Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) model is examined in this paper. An Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) comprising two-level Differential Evolution (DE) optimization scheme is proposed. The first level searches for the appropriate model order while the second level computes the optimal/sub-optimal corresponding parameters. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both simulated ARMA models and practical rotary motion system. The results of both examples show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm over a well known conventional technique
Solar-based fuzzy intelligent water sprinkle system
A solar-based intelligent water sprinkler system project that has been developed to ensure the effectiveness in watering the plant is improved by making the system automated. The control system consists of an electrical capacitance soil moisture sensor installed into the ground which is interfaced to a controller unit of Motorola 68HC11 Handy board microcontroller. The microcontroller was programmed based on the decision rules made using fuzzy logic approach on when to water the lawn. The whole system is powered up by the solar energy which is then interfaced to a particular type of irrigation timer for plant fertilizing schedule and rain detector through a simple design of rain dual-collector tipping bucket. The controller unit automatically disrupted voltage signals sent to the control valves whenever irrigation was not needed. Using this system we combined the logic implementation in the area of irrigation and weather sensing equipment, and more efficient water delivery can be made possible
SETTING SUSTAINABLE STANDARDS FOR BIOFUEL PRODUCTION: LEGAL AND INSTITUTIONAL IMPERATIVES
Due to the extensive warnings and scientific predictions on the potential and emerging impacts of global climate change on human life and survival, policy makers across the world are beginning to embrace renewable energy options as ways to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. 1 As the United States President noted:
But to truly transform our economy, protect our security, and save our planet from the ravages of climate change, we need to ultimately make clean, renewable energy the profitable kind of energy... We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy. Yet we import more oil today than ever before
