    IMPACT OF CONFLICT MANAGEMENT ON EMPLOYEES'PERFORMANCE IN A PUBLIC SECTOR ORGANISATION IN NIGERIA.

    This study investigated the impact of conflict management on employees’ performance in a public sector organisation, a case of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). This study adopted the survey research design. A total of 100 respondents were selected for the study using stratified sampling technique. Questionnaire was used to collect primary data. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. Hypotheses were tested through regression analysis and correlation coefficient. The findings revealed that effective conflict management enhance employee’s performance in an organisation and that organisation’s conflict management system influences employee performance in the organisation. It was recommended that organisation should embark on training and retraining of its employees in area of conflict management so as to create a conductive working environment for the employees and that there should be efficient and effective communication between and among all categories of the employees the organisation. This will reduce conflicting situations in the organisation

    In this study, 11members of human low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) sequences was retrieved from UniProtKB/ SWISS-PROT protein database and was analyzed for information about their structural, functional and phylogenetic features. This was achieved by using many established biocomputational tools which was available at their latest version. This study shows that LRP 12 and 3 are closely related with LRP8 being their nearest neighbor. In all, it was observed that there were very low possession of certain essential amino acid like glycine, proline and a very high aliphatic in all the LRP family. Considering the evolutionary history, functional domains, high aliphatic index, overall proportion of glycine and proline and the established role of one (LRP8) of this closely related LRP in diseases, it is thus predicted that the other closely related LRP3 and 12 molecules may be important candidate in investigating the aetiopathology of Myocardial infarction1diseases or other heart related disorder

    Properties of Rhodanese from the Liver of Tilapia Oreochromis Niloticus, in Asejire Lake, Nigeria

    Staff PublicationThe study investigates the purification and characterisation of rhodanese from the liver of the tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) collected from Asejire Lake in Nigeria. This was with a view to understanding the biochemical basis of the survival of the fish in cyanide polluted water. Rhodanese was isolated and purified from liver tissue homogenate of tilapia using CM-Sephadex ion exchange chromatography and Sephadex G-75 gel filtration. The specific activity of the enzyme was 56.86 U/mg. The Km values for KCN and Na2S2O3 as substrates were 0.1240 ± 0.0021 mM and 0.0516 ± 0.0097 mM, respectively. The apparent molecular weight was estimated by gel filtration on a Sephacyl S-400 column to be 35,460 Da. The optimal activity was found at pH 6.5 and the temperature optimum was 40°C. The rhodanese enzyme showed that the activity of the enzyme was not affected by MgCl2, KCl, NH4Cl, MnCl2 and CaCl2 while AlCl3, inhibited the enzyme

    Issues of South-South migration: A case study of Nigerian diasporas in Ghana

    In spite of the fact that intra and inter-regional migration predates the colonial period in Africa, South-South visà-vis South-North migration has received little attention in the international discourse on migration. Recent investigations are indicating that South-South migration is important in terms of its magnitude. For example, a World Bank study shows that about two-thirds of Sub-Saharan migrants remain within their sub-region with among the highest rates of intra-regional mobility (World Bank, 2011). Beyond this general observation, information is scarce in respect of who these migrants are, their contributions to the development process of the sub-region, their opportunities and challenges within the context of regional economic communities and most importantly the need for appropriate policies and strategies to address the constraints facing this valuable resource. It is evident from our study that Nigerians are engaged in trans-nationalism in the context of intra-regional migration in West Africa. The Nigerian Diasporas in Ghana maintain social, political and most importantly economic linkages with their home country in the process of forming transnational communities. At destination, they are organized along ethnic, religious and professional lines, which are the platforms for their interventions in the home country as remitters of ideas, funds and goods. Their altruistic posture has often served as a major household survival strategy to cushion the negative effects of unemployment, sickness and bad harvests on household members left behind by providing for their basic consumption needs, and meeting the human capital needs of the next generation in terms of education, health care and shelter. For better-off households, remittances provide capital for small businesses and small-scale industries. The collective remittances through Home Town Development and ethnic associations are sources of funding basic infrastructural facilities which benefit all households especially in small communities that may not be benefiting from local government budgets. The evidence from the activities of Nigerian Diasporas in Ghana shows that they, as part of the Nigerian transnationals world-wide, can complement and deepen Nigeria’s efforts at reducing poverty and improving development at local and national levels. Therefore, the government needs to recognize this potential and factor it into its regional cooperation, especially at ECOWAS level in order to address some of the challenges and constraints facing trans-nationals in member states

    Socio-Cultural Factor As Determinant of Female Leadership Quality; Implications for Human Resource Development

    This study investigates the influence of socio-cultural factors on the leadership quality of male and female leaders in work organisations that could enhance organisational effectiveness. A descriptive survey research design method was adopted for the study. One hundred and fifty respondents from five purposefully selected work organisations were selected for the study, thirty randomly selected respondents from each workplace. 145 well filled questionnaires out of the 150 were used for data analysis. The questionnaire used as the instrument for data collection was titled: ‘Socio-Cultural Factors and Gender Leadership Quality Scale’ (SOCFGLQS). Collected data were analysed and interpreted accordingly with the aid of descriptive statistical techniques such as total scores, frequencies and percentages. The hypotheses were tested using chi-square method of data analysis at 0.05 alpha levels. Findings reveal that female mother’s instinct promotes organisational effectiveness and that female leader’s staffcenteredness positively affects organisational performance. Also, employees’ job performance is significantly influenced by male headship. This shows that right leadership quality which could be an off-shoot of society’s culture could promote organisational effectiveness, and socio-cultural factors play great role in the quality of the leader and by extension the effectiveness of the organisation. It is recommended that the socio-cultural beliefs and practices that inhibit good leadership in workplace should be discarded and with good leadership training and holistic re-orientation, male and female leaders would perform maximally to enhance better relationship in the workplace for effective organisation performance.

The paper recommends that Libraries should be creative, they should think of better ways of doing same thing, they should think outside the box, Library management should occasionally call for library staff meeting I discussion where staff should think on how to improve library services, Library schools should also inculcate in students philosophical thinking and analytical skills that will in turn develop creativity and innovation in the mind of the students. It is therefore concluded that 21't century libraries are faced with series of challenges, therefore, the present day librarians must have creative and innovative mind so as to render effective and efficient services to users and also remain relevant in this present age and ages to come

    Interactions of cross-linked and uncross-linked chitosan hydrogels with surfactants for biomedical applications

    The swelling equilibrium of Chitosan and sodium tripolyphosphate (NaTPP) cross-linked chitosan hydrogels in aqueous solutions of surfactants differing in structure and hydrophobicity at 250C is reported. Anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) and neutral surfactants Triton X-100 were employed. The surfactants induced abrupt change in the gel volume. The equilibrium swelling ratio first decreased sharply as the concentration of the surfactant increased and remained almost constant up to the critical micelles concentration (CMC) of the surfactants and then increased again as the concentration increased above the CMC of the surfactants used. The equilibrium volume change of hydrogel was significantly increased from HTAB > Triton X-100 > SDS> the mixed SDS/Triton X- 100 system. A decrease in equilibrium swelling ratio of the gel in SDS/TX-100 mixtures was observed with an increase in the mole ratio of SDS. The results also revealed that cross-linking with 3% or 5% w/v NaTPP exhibited lower equilibrium swelling values. This swelling study showed that cross-linking density, surfactant type, and their respective concentrations were important parameters that could affect equilibrium swelling of chitosan gel.     Application of atomic layer deposited dopant sources for ultra‐shallow doping of silicon

    The advanced silicon semiconductor technology requires doping methods for production of ultra‐shallow junctions with sufficiently low sheet resistance. Furthermore, advanced 3‐dimensional topologies may require controlled local doping that cannot be achieved by ionimplantation. Here, the application of the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method for pre‐deposition of dopant sources is presented. Antimony oxide and boron oxide were investigated for such application. Ozone‐based ALD was carried out on silicon wafers by using triethylantimony or tris‐(dimethylamido)borane. Very homogeneous Sb2O5 deposition could be achieved on flat silicon wafers and in trench structures. The thermal stability of antimony oxide layers was investigated by rapid thermal annealing experiments. The layers were not stable above 750 °C. Therefore, this material failed to act as dopant source so far. In contrast, ultra‐shallow boron doping of silicon from ALD grown boron oxide films was successful. However, pure B2O3 films were highly unstable after exposure to ambient air. The boron oxide films could be protected by thin Sb2O5 or Al2O3 films that were in‐situ grown by ALD. Low temperature ALD of Al2O3 at 50 °C from trimethylaluminium (TMA) and ozone was investigated in detail with respect of its protective effect on boron oxide. Interestingly, it was observed that already one ALD cycle of TMA and O3 resulted in significant increase in stability of the boron oxide in air

    Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) Based Orthogonal Transform Approach for Earth's Electric Field Signal Processing

    The Earth's electric field signal is generated from the released energy through a sudden dislocation of the segment in the earth's crust. Many researchers have reported the use of parametric modeling technique for earth's electric field signal processing. The existing earth's electric signal processing based on parametric modeling technique has suffered from the noise. Therefore, the effective earth's electric field signal processing is necessary in order to process the signal with better performance for the identification. Singular value decomposition (SVD) based parametric modeling technique is applied as feature extraction technique to the Earth's electric field signal. The projection of excitation signal on the right eigenvector of the LPC filter impulse response matrix is involved in this technique. The combination of SVD-based parametric modeling technique has perfectly classified the significant Earth's electric field data prior to the earthquake and the Earth's electric field data on the normal condition after the polynomial kernel function is applied

    Carbazole angular dioxygenation and mineralization by bacteria isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated tropical African soil

    Four bacterial strains isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soils in Lagos, Nigeria, displayed extensive degradation abilities on carbazole, an N-heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. Physicochemical analyses of the sampling sites (ACPP, MWO, NESU) indicate gross pollution of the soils with a high hydrocarbon content (157,067.9 mg/kg) and presence of heavy metals. Phylogenetic analysis of the four strains indicated that they were identified as Achromobacter sp. strain SL1, Pseudomonas sp. strain SL4, Microbacterium esteraromaticumstrain SL6, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain BA. The rates of degradation of carbazole by the four isolates during 30 days of incubation were 0.057, 0.062, 0.036, and 0.050 mg L−1 h −1 for strains SL1, SL4, SL6, and BA. Gas chromatographic (GC) analyses of residual carbazole after 30 days of incubation revealed that 81.3, 85, 64.4, and 76 % of 50 mg l −1 carbazole were degraded by strains SL1, SL4, SL6, and BA, respectively. GC-mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatographic analyses of the extracts from the growing and resting cells of strains SL1, SL4, and SL6 cultured on carbazole showed detection of anthranilic acid and catechol while these metabolites were not detected in strain BA under the same conditions. This study has established for the first time carbazole angular dioxygenation and mineralization by isolates from African environment
