    Optimal selection of digital asset management systems in academic libraries: leveraging on Covenant University model

    The use of institutional repository (IR) has gained tremendous acceptance in several Higher Education Institution (HEI) in many countries. However, many HEIs report poor usage and enthusiasm. This paper develops a decision model to assist in characterization and selection of digital repository solutions in academic libraries. Five technologies, namely: Eprints, Dspace, Fedora Repository, Greenstone and SAP Document System explored. Using the model, these were evaluated with respect to installation process, functionality, performance, cost, security, usability, workflow, scalability and interoperability. The model was found to adequately address the critical transparency requirements for due diligence selection process in the establishment of Covenant University Institutional Repository. It is recommended that leveraging on this model would enhance adoption and usage of digital repositories in developing countries

    EFFECT OF STOCK MARKET REGULATIONS AND REFORMS ON INVESTORS’WEALTH IN NIGERIA

    This paper examines the impact of stock market regulations and reforms on frequent wealth–loss often experienced by investors in Nigeria Stock Exchange Markets right from March, 2008 in Nigeria. Secondary data on two selected banks-listed on the Nigeria Stock exchange market in Nigeria before April, 2003 using random selection method, viz: First Bank of Nigeria and Union Bank of Nigeria. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical method of time series and Simple Percentage Method (SPM). The study revealed that share values are attractive and considerably stable in term of return to investment of shareholders during the preshare crisis period due to the effectiveness of the enabling stock market regulations than in the post share crisis period when value of shares went into spiralling declension. Stock market regulations and reforms is now under serious challenges as the percentage of indigenous investors has reduced drastically from 19% to less than 14% in the Nigeria Stock Exchange markets. Thus the study recommends more proactive regulations and reforms, potent enough to bring back confidence to investors in this post share crisis periods in Nigeria

    A transform-based feature extraction approach for motor imagery tasks classification

    In this paper, we present a new motor imagery classification method in the context of electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain–computer interface (BCI). This method uses a signal-dependent orthogonal transform, referred to as linear prediction singular value decomposition (LP-SVD), for feature extraction. The transform defines the mapping as the left singular vectors of the LP coefficient filter impulse response matrix. Using a logistic tree-based model classifier; the extracted features are classified into one of four motor imagery movements. The proposed approach was first benchmarked against two related state-of-the-art feature extraction approaches, namely, discrete cosine transform (DCT) and adaptive autoregressive (AAR)-based methods. By achieving an accuracy of 67.35%, the LP-SVD approach outperformed the other approaches by large margins (25% compared with DCT and 6 % compared with AAR-based methods). To further improve the discriminatory capability of the extracted features and reduce the computational complexity, we enlarged the extracted feature subset by incorporating two extra features, namely, Q- and the Hotelling’s T 2 statistics of the transformed EEG and introduced a new EEG channel selection method. The performance of the EEG classification based on the expanded feature set and channel selection method was compared with that of a number of the state-of-the-art classification methods previously reported with the BCI IIIa competition data set. Our method came second with an average accuracy of 81.38%

    This study examines poverty as an African epidemic, with an empirical evidence of Nigeria. Poverty unarguably remains a global phenomenon that is complex and multi-dimensional in nature. Poverty is an economic situation where a household income is inadequate to meet the minimum nutritional need for growth and long-term survival (World Bank, 1996). The primary source of data was adopted via questionnaire and oral interview. A simple correlation technique was adopted to address the significant relationship among the responses of the respondents gathered though the questionnaire to derive logical conclusion. The study concludes that the blame on poverty is placed on modes of designing and implementing developmental programmes, which are seen to have failed to take the basic needs of the poor into account and historical factors together with the existing social structures that have developed from them. The paper further discovered lots of disparities in people’s income, gender, health, education etc. The study however, recommends that government should articulate a bold vision and establish concrete targets for improving and saving the lives of those threatened by diseases and hunger by way of introducing grants to ‘senior citizens’ – old people, providing monthly allowance to them, ensuring support for children that are orphan, homeless, and even with disabilities etc., in all areas of life. The study further recommends that government in all levels should be identified with the importance of using critical statistical data to corroborate progress report in order to assist in monitoring and implementing poverty alleviation programmes initiated by federal government, and to meet the target of Financial System Strategy, FSS 2020 and Millennium Development Goal (MDGs) by 2015

    Impacts of industrial democracy on organizational performance (case study of selected private and public sector organizations in Lagos State, Nigeria)

    This study investigated the impact of industrial democracy on organizational performance. A structured survey instrument was used to collect data from a sample of 815 workers randomly selected from purposively selected work organizations. Both male and female respondents who had spent between 3 to 10 years and above in their organizations were used as subjects for the study. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analyzed using Statistical Analysis System (SAS 9.2). Regression Analysis and Pearson Correlation coefficient statistical were used in testing the hypotheses. Simple percentage was used to analyse the demographic information collected from the respondents. Findings revealed that industrial democracy had positive impact on organization performance with the degree of influence being 93.06%. The finding also showed that there was significant relationship between industrial democracy and employee behaviour; and that industrial democracy did not undermine management power but rather strengthened it, since it accounted for 53.60% of the total strength of management power: Fcal> Ftab (211.37> 3.8925). It is therefore recommended that management should make industrial democracy part of its policy and ensure that it is practiced to the letter for better performance of the organization and the satisfaction of the employees

    With a number of search engines on the web and each with different indexing and ranking methods and different coverage, finding the one that gives the best results for a query becomes a bit challenging. The main problem however, that existing Search engines have to deal with is how to avoid irrelevant information and to retrieve the relevant ones. This current work presents a new approach for retrieving relevant information on the Web, by adopting breadth-First search algorithm. The implementation result of the retrieval system was analysed using recall and precision model for three departments at Elizade University. By learning from users’ behaviour, the approach can return very high quality search results, with a strongly reduced computing load

    Impact of economic globalization on human capital: Evidence from Nigerian economy

    Investment in human capital in relation to global world is to achieve an optimum return in terms of a gainful employment, productivity and high standard of living. This paper uses autoregressive distributed lag model to determine the cointegration, long run and short run elasticities among human capital, economic growth, economic globalization and foreign direct investment (FDI), for the period 1980-2011. The empirical results reveal that there is a long run relationship among the variables tested in this study. Also, economic growth and FDI show a positive impact on human capital and economic globalization indicates a negative impact on human capital in Nigeria

    Ag films grown by remote plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition on different substrates

    Plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition (PALD) was carried for growing thin boron oxide films onto silicon aiming at the formation of dopant sources for shallow boron doping of silicon by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). A remote capacitively coupled plasma source powered by GaN microwave oscillators was used for generating oxygen plasma in the PALD process with tris(dimethylamido)borane as boron containing precursor. ALD type growth was obtained; growth per cycle was highest with 0.13 nm at room temperature and decreased with higher temperature. The as-deposited films were highly unstable in ambient air and could be protected by capping with in-situ PALD grown antimony oxide films. After 16 weeks of storage in air, degradation of the film stack was observed in an electron microscope. The instability of the boron oxide, caused by moisture uptake, suggests the application of this film for testing moisture barrier properties of capping materials particularly for those grown by ALD. Boron doping of silicon was demonstrated using the uncapped PALD B2O3 films for RTA processes without exposing them to air. The boron concentration in the silicon could be varied depending on the source layer thickness for very thin films, which favors the application of ALD for semiconductor doping processesInvestment Bank Berlin and EFR

    Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for the control of Particulate Matter (PM) emission in wet scrubber system

    Air pollution such as particulate matter (PM) emitted from industries result in several thousands of deaths. In recognition of this global threat, a large number of abatement measures have been taken to minimize the emission of this pollutant. Wet scrubber system has been the most widely used control device for PM contaminants. Its operating variables (gas velocity, temperature profile, particle size, liquid droplet’s size, terminal settling velocity of liquid droplets, particle density and liquid to gas ratio) fluctuates randomly, thus resulting in a non-linear dynamic behavior of the system. This non-linearity generally limits the ability of the scrubber to control PM less than 5µm in diameter. Thus, in this study, intelligent control technique based on fuzzy logic controller (FLC) has been developed to solve the non-linearity in the system by selecting appropriate scrubbing liquid droplet size in order to improve system performance to control PM that are less than 5µm in diameter. The developed FLC has two inputs (error and change in error) and a single output. The results shows that within short settling time, the controller was able to effectively reduce the PM that are less than 5µm below the set-point (20µg/m3) which is the maximum allowable emission limit of PM contaminants by world health organization (WHO)

    Abstract Indigenous pottery art as a small scale business was studied in the perspective of entrepreneurship. The study area is Dada pottery located at Okelele quarter, Ilorin East local government of Kwara state. A structured and validated questionnaire was used. This was in the format of five point scale that ranges from Strongly Agreed to Strongly Disagree. Information was obtained from primary and secondary sources. The research results reveals that indigenous pottery has prospects wider and increased acceptability among the rural and the urban dwellers for domestic and interior decorations especially in the hotel industry. The Dada potters are good, deft in creativity and innovative but are facing many occupational challenges which include lack of working capital as loans from banks, continual usage of old equipment etc. Dada potter centre need entrepreneurship approach in the area of production, new marketing and products production strategies to be able to compete with foreign wares and increase the scope of consumers
