In vitro anthelmintic activity of three medicinal plants
In vitro anthelmintic assay of three medicinal plants was conducted to investigate which
plants were anthelmintic. In vitro anthelmintic activity of all the three medicinal plants were
carried out using earthworm at 50, 100, 200mg/ml of plant extracts from Vernonia
amygdalina, Ocimum grattisimum and Talinum triangulare. Results showed that 200mg/ml
was effective concentration for all the medicinal plants. Vernonia amygdalina showed faster
anthelmintic than Ocimum grattisimum and Talinum triangulare. The plants can be used /employed in pharmaceutical industry to be used as anthelmintic
drugs for treating livestocks affected with helminths
Library Professionals and Social Network Sites: Use, Relevance and Challenges from University Libraries in Ogun State, Nigeria
The use of social network sites among library professionals in university libraries in Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria is investigated. The study population consisted of seventy-eight librarians in four universities in the state. Questionnaires (which was the instrument for data collection) were administered to the entire population, out of which 55 (representing 70.5 % response rate) were filled, returned and analysed for the study. The study revealed that library professionals do make use of SNS. The most frequently visited SNS was Linkedln (58.2 %). The respondents also indicated that they visited SNS for the purpose of connecting and collaborating with friends and colleagues, carrying out current awareness and reference services to library users, etc. Majority of the respondents (94.5 %) in the study further revealed that the greatest challenge to the use of social network sites was lack of social media skills. The first hypothesis tested in the study indicated that there was moderate positive significant relationship between device used for internet access and use of social network sites (r=.408**, N= 55, p.05). The study was concluded with recommendations that library professionals should undergo training in social media skills
INFORMATION NEED, ACCESS, AND USE FOR SOCIAL WELFARE AND FAMILY PLANNING BY RURAL DWELLERS IN IDO AND AKINYELE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS OF OYO STATE, NIGERIA.
Information is a resource of immeasurable value to both rural and urban dwellers. The
information available to any individual per time determines to a large extent the decision such an
individual will take on issues. The rural areas in Nigeria are often bedeviled with lack of basic
infrastructures that could have enhanced the welfare of its inhabitants. Rural areas in Nigeria are
characterised with poor roads, lack of pipe borne water, lack of standard schools and health
facilities, inadequate or total lack of electricity among others. The information available to the
rural man/woman cannot be compared to that of their urban counterparts. The urban dwellers
enjoys regular power supply, have opportunity to attend seminars/workshops, have access to
standard health facilities; all these give the urban dwellers better exposure to information
compared to rural dwellers. This, without missing words will directly or indirectly affect
decisions rural dweller will take on issues compared to his/her urban counterparts
HISTOGRAM NORMALIZATION TECHNIQUE FOR PREPROCESSING MAMMOGRAPHIC IMAGES
images requires high computational capabilities. Pre-processing is one of the most important step in the mammogram analysis
due to poor captured mammographic image qualities. Pre-processing is basically used to correct and adjust the mammogram
image for further study and classification. Many image pre-processing techniques have been developed over the past decades
to help radiologists in diagnosing breast cancer. Most studies conducted have proven that a pre-processed image is easier for
radiologist to accurately detect breast cancer especially for dense breast. Different types of techniques are available for preprocessing
of mammograms, which are used to improve image quality, remove noise, adjust contrast, enhance the image and
preserve the edges within the image. This paper acquired 20 digital mammograms from Mammographic Image Analysis
Society (MIAS) database and uses Histogram Normalization algorithm for pre-processing of the mammograms. A percentage
of 95% was obtained. It was observed that the pre-processed mammographic images displayed breast abnormalities clearer
with little or no noise
The Nigerian Music Industry: Challenges, Prospects and Possibilities
This paper explores the status of the Nigerian music industry through the paradigm of its music promotion, marketing, and distributing structure. Using ethnographic and bibliographic sources, the study traces the history of the Nigerian recording industry which nose-dived from the late 1980s with the exit of major label operations like Sony, Polygrams and EMI due to political and economic factors and recognised the impetus given the music scene through the resilience and creativity of the new hip hop generation who now have to contend with myriads of challenges among which is piracy and copyrights issues. While highlighting some of these challenges, the paper presents an array of possibilities as well as recommendations and concludes that with proper structuring and intervention, the Nigerian music industry can be a major player within the global music scene, and be a viable revenue earner for the country aside from crude oil
Phase synchronization between tropospheric radio refractivity and rainfall amount in a tropical region
This study investigated linear and nonlinear relationship between the amount of rainfall and
radio refractivity in a tropical country, Nigeria using forty seven locations scattered across the
country. Correlation and Phase synchronization measures were used for the linear and nonlinear
relationship respectively. Weak correlation and phase synchronization was observed between seasonal
mean rainfall amount and radio refractivity while strong phase synchronization was found for the
detrended data suggesting similar underlying dynamics between rainfall amount and radio refractivity.
Causation between rainfall and radio refractivity in a tropical location was studied using Granger causality
test. In most of the Southern locations, rainfall was found to Granger cause radio refractivity.
Furthermore, it was observed that there is strong correlation between mean rainfall amount and the
phase synchronization index over Nigeria. Coupling between rainfall and radio refractivity has been found
to be due to water vapour in the atmosphere. Frequency planning and budgeting
for microwave propagation during periods of high rainfall should take into consideration this nonlinear
relationship
Effect of dietary supplementation of Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) leaf on high fat diet/streptozotocin induced diabetes in rats’ brain and platelets
Background
This study investigated the effects of Padauk leaf on brain malondialdehyde (MDA) content, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities, ectonucleotidases and adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities in the platelet of high fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats.
Methods
The animals were divided into six groups (n = 7): normal control rats; diabetic rats + high fat diet (HFD); diabetic rats + HFD + Metformin; diabetic rats + HFD + acarbose; diabetic rats + HFD + 10% Padauk leaf; normal rats + basal diet + 10% Padauk leaf. After 30 days of experiment comprising of acclimatization, dietary manipulation, pre-treatment with STZ and supplementation with Padauk leaf, the animals were sacrificed and the rats’ brain and blood were collected for subsequent analysis.
Results
The results demonstrated that the elevated MDA content and AChE activity in the diabetic rats were significantly reduced when compared with the control rats. Furthermore, the increased NTPDases, 5′-nucleotidase and ADA activities in the diabetic rats were significantly reduced when compared with the control rats.
Conclusion
This study demonstrated that Padauk leaf exhibited modulatory effects on purinergic and cholinergic enzymes involved in the prevention of platelet abnormality and consequent vascular complications in diabetic state
Exploration of Proverb as a Crucial Device in Tunde Kelani’s Saworoide
This treatise explores Tunde Kelani’s movie Saworide (1999), with a view to examining the functions of proverbs in movie production. A textual analysis of some selected proverbs in the movie was carried out to demonstrate the implications of this phenomenon in an attempt by the producer to project the themes of political legitimacy, accountability and institutional checks on corruption in a changing socio-political structure. The study highlighted the importance of proverbs in films, and showcased how proverbs serve as a crucial device of story-telling in the re-creation of a genuine and believable Nigerian democratic story. Effect of Post Welding Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Properties of Welds of AISI 1040 Medium Carbon Steel
AISI 1040 steel is one of the grades of medium carbon steel of American standard and as such, is mostly being used in the industries. Again, when welding a piece of material, only the joint and surrounding area being welded (Heat Affected Zone, HAZ) is heated and cooled. This causes uneven expansion and cooling, and the piece begins to warp or distort at the point. Uncontrolled Distortion may lead to a serious dimensional defect/failure. In order to arrest this failure, Steps may be taken before, during, and after welding to minimize or control the effects of this heat distortion. Controlling the effects of heat distortion after welding forms the basis of this study. To this end, this work studied the effects of post welding heat treatments on the mechanical properties of welds of AISI 1040 medium carbon steel. Butt-welds of AISI 1040 medium carbon steel were prepared with the aid of electric arc welding and subsequently subjected to annealing, normalizing, hardening and tempering heat treatment processes. Finally, the welds were subjected to impact, tensile and Rockwell hardness tests. The results show that tempering improves the toughness of the steel at the HAZ. Normalizing refines the grain structure and relieve the internal stress, Annealing increases the ductility and softens the steel at the HAZ. Hardness and brittleness of the hardened and tempered pair increase while that of the normalized and annealed pair considerably reduced. The study recommends paired annealing and normalizing processes for welds of AISI 1040 medium carbon steel
Reliability and Improvement of Electric Power Generation and Distribution (Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria as a Case Study)
The present unreliable and erratic power supply is a pointer to the fact that there is a
great need for fault evaluation and reliability studies of electric power system in the
Nigeria. The recent blackout in the country has grounded many activities and has
destroyed many industrial processes. Also, the power industries face a lot of
problems. Some of the highest priority issues being generation of sufficient power,
urgent clearance of faults, adequate protection and increase reliability of the system,
that is, bringing a steady uninterrupted power supply to the consumers. The
Nigerian power problem resulted to incessant planned, forced and unplanned
outages. In addition, it has resulted to erratic and unreliable supply of electricity in
the country. It has reduced productivity and has increased unemployment rate in the
country to over 40million (this figure is over 70% of Nigerian youths. It has led many
of the youths in the country to crime. It has led many of the deaths of many innocent
people in the country. Hence, an analytical method is developed to assess the
dynamic- reliability of the distribution system, as well as optimizes the occurrence of
faults along each of the individual consumer point in a feeder in order to improve the
performance of the system. This research publication therefore evaluates the
occurrence of faults which is about 856 occurrences during a period of 8 years and
outages which range between 1118 to 3785 hours per annum along the distribution
lines, also the failure rates of each of the feeders were analyzed in order to improve on
the supply of electricity in the distribution network. The reliability of the system
which ranges between 8.57*10-12to 9.548*10-5 were analyzed; and fault clearing
techniques were carried out. Efforts were made to adequately assess the failure rates
of the feeders which range between 0.003 and 0.001 and reliability of the distribution
system. Efforts were also made to improve the performance of the system. As a
result, it was possible to establish improvement techniques which ensure adequate
and constant supply of electricity to all the consumers for industrial growth and
employment: a basic solution to increasing crime rate in the country
