    The Registry as the Heart of the University System: Making it Beat Efficiently

    2nd Annual Registry LectureI chose the analogy of the heart because of the critical role which the Registry plays in the health of a university. The heart pumps blood to all the cells in the body. Similarly, the Registry services all the units in the university. If the Registry breaks down, the university will literally ground to a halt. If there are blockages in the Registry in terms of efficiency of operation, like blockages to the coronary vessels, the university will have an equivalent of a heart attack. This means that steps must be taken in all universities to keep the Registry working at optimal capacity

    Ergonomics Investigation of Musculoskeletal Disorder Among the Workforce of Waste Management Industry in Nigeria

    The objective of this study is to undertake an Ergonomic Scrutiny of Desecrate Management Industry. Ten (10) employees of the parking and collection department of Kim Waste Management Authority (KWMA) were selected. Their activities were video and recorded while working and their different postures were analyzed using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA). Result showed that 10 % were at medium risk; 40 % were at high risk and 50 % were at very high risk for the workers in KWMA. It as discovered that workers are subjected to Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSDs) as a result of the postures adopted during the work process

    With the level of efforts and interventions by researchers and organizations around the world towards gender equality in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM), the number of women participation is still very low. UNESCO Institute for Statistics (2015) revealed that female representation is only about 30% of the total population in STEM while in Africa it is about 17% ( Ekine, 2013). This statistics, raises the question of what could be responsible for the resistant disparity? Could it be that girls at the foundational level do not have adequate career information about STEM and all it entails? What are their perceptions of Mathematics and sciences, are there some demographic issues? There is need to discover what the real causes of gender disparity in mathematics and sciences are from the junior secondary school, a period that precedes the choice subjects that form student’s career paths. This will provide an empirical basis for effectively bridging the gender gap in STEM in Nigeria thereby building and releasing the necessary latent human resources to sustain development and compete in the global economy as well as ensuring inclusivity of girls and women.Covenant Universit

    Biotechnological remedies for the estuarine environment polluted with heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants

    Estuaries in the areas prone to anthropogenic activities are exposed to multifarious pollutants. Toxic concentrations of heavy metals do exist with persistent organic compounds in such estuaries prolonging the recalcitrance and ecotoxicological consequences of the chemicals, which impact on the health of the brackish water and by extension, the oceans. The quest for high aesthetic quality of the estuarine environment is gaining attention from global campaign, which requires effective remedial strategies to replace the physical and chemical methods in use that are costly and often leave behind toxic residues in the environment. Contrary to physico-chemical remedial processes, bioremediation strategies are projected as a promising green technology to remove pollutants from the estuarine environment. The concept of bioremediation involves the use of competent biological elements such as microorganisms and plants, along with or without the biomolecules they produced, to ameliorate pollution. Therefore, this paper reviews the various bioremediation technologies that would be applicable to decommissioning estuarine environments polluted with toxic metals and persistent organic compounds

    A modified Otsu’s algorithm for improving the performance of the energy detector in cognitive radio

    In this paper, we present a modified Otsu’s algorithm for solving the automatic threshold estimation problem in energy detection based Cognitive Radio (CR) application. The modified algorithm was tested extensively and compared with other known algorithms using both simulated and real datasets. In particular, our findings reveal that the modified algorithm provides an averagely lower false alarm rate than the other techniques compared with in this paper. Furthermore, the results obtained show that the algorithm is independent of the bandwidth’s size, while having a total complexity of O (V), where V is the total sample size. Thus, from the results of this paper, full and effective automatic blind spectrum sensing using an Energy Detector is possible in CR. This can be achieved at a Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 5 dB to meet the IEEE 802.22 draft standard of P D> 90% and P FA< 10%

    This study models optimal debt and spending in Malawi using Dynamic Optimization Approaches. The study found that the economy of Malawi is not free from debt crisis, despite the benefits of Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) that was extended to Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) in 2005. The optimal trends show that the country has been and remains vulnerable to debt and fiscal crises despite the various palliative measures that were introduced by International Monetary Funds (IMF), especially the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) offered the country in 2008, during the global financial crises

    A communal catalogue reveals Earth’s multiscale microbial diversity

    Our growing awareness of the microbial world’s importance and diversity contrasts starkly with our limited understanding of its fundamental structure. Despite recent advances in DNA sequencing, a lack of standardized protocols and common analytical frameworks impedes comparisons among studies, hindering the development of global inferences about microbial life on Earth. Here we present a meta-analysis of microbial community samples collected by hundreds of researchers for the Earth Microbiome Project. Coordinated protocols and new analytical methods, particularly the use of exact sequences instead of clustered operational taxonomic units, enable bacterial and archaeal ribosomal RNA gene sequences to be followed across multiple studies and allow us to explore patterns of diversity at an unprecedented scale. The result is both a reference database giving global context to DNA sequence data and a framework for incorporating data from future studies, fostering increasingly complete characterization of Earth’s microbial diversit

    Detection and antibiotic susceptibility of pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from the final effluent of two wastewater treatment Plants in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

    Wastewater is an important reservoir for Escherichia coli and can present significant acute toxicity if released into receiving water sources without being adequately treated. To analyze whether pathogenic E. coli strains that cause infections are in treated effluent and to recognize antibiotic profile. 476 confirmed isolates from two treatment Plants were characterized for the presence of various E. coli pathotypes. A total of 8 pathotypes were screened and only four were confirmed. UPEC was about 5.7% followed by EAEC at 2.3%, NMEC at 1.1% and EPEC at 0.6%. Antibiotic susceptibility patterns of E. coli pathotypes such as UPEC showed low resistance to antibiotics like meropenem (100%), cefotaxime (100%) and gentamicin (88.9%). The pathotype also showed high degrees of resistance to tetracycline (74.1%), ampicillin (74.1%) and cephalothin (66.7%). Other E. coli pathotypes, EAEC, NMEC and EPEC, showed high sensitivity (100%) to meropenem, gentamicin and cefotaxime, and varying degree of resistances to ampicillin, tetracycline and cephalothin. The results of this study reveal that the two Plants discharge effluents with pathogenic E. coli and are reservoir for the bacteria into receiving water sources. In summary, this finding raises the possibility that at least some pathogenic E. coli pathotypes are getting into the environment through WWTPs and represent potential route for enteropathogenic infection. In addition, certain pathotypes may have acquired resistance properties, becoming a potential cause of drug resistance infection.     Systematic studies on the association between men’s sexual dysfunction (low sexual desire, ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunctions, genital ulcers, testicular disorders, prostate cancer or sexually transmitted infections) and marital conflict are emerging. However, the coping strategies adopted by wives in such circumstances are not commonly reported in the literature. Male sexual functioning is vital to the marital relationship, lack of it can result in intolerable cohabitation or relationship breakdown, and could also cause infertility, infidelity, and arouse stigma in Nigeria. The understanding of coping strategies by female partners could guide in the counselling and treatment of men’s sexual health problems. Effective coping has the potential to lessen or prevent negative outcomes, and thereby could reduce marital conflict
