    Light-touch retrofitting, earth and textile

    International audienceIn a context of climate instability and energy insecurity, adapting existing housing is essential. Large-scale retrofitting efforts have struggled to be effective, leading to the exploration of light-touch and participatory approaches. In the mining basin of Nord and Pas-de-Calais, where 70,000 former miners’ homes face energy poverty, two collaborative workshops were conducted in 2022 and 2023 in the Cité d’Orient housing estate in Harnes.The Bio-ARA workshop explored the use of raw earth render for its thermal and aesthetic properties, while the Bio-Tex workshop focused on designing bio-sourced curtains made of linen and recycled cotton to better distribute heat within homes. These workshops, combining research, education, and hands-on experimentation, involved researchers, students, residents, and artisans.The results show that this approach actively engages residents, helping them develop new skills and perceive thermal comfort differently. Testimonials highlighted improved insulation and increased appreciation for the aesthetic qualities of the implemented solutions. These low-cost experiments (€5,000 per household) offer accessible solutions to combat energy poverty and could be replicated in other post-industrial contexts

    From seller to broker : When and how issue sellers engage with external stakeholders to sell issues inside organizations

    International audienceIssue sellers employ a variety of tactics to create internal support for issues they seek to advance within an organization. While the relationship between internal issue “sellers” and “buyers” has been examined in prior work, we address a crucial omission in this body of literature, namely how issue sellers engage with external stakeholders to influence internal issue selling. We study corporate social responsibility (CSR) managers, their organizational counterparts who are expected to implement CSR, and external stakeholders (in our study non-governmental organizations). We find that issue sellers have three issue-selling tactics at their disposal that they employ dynamically and depending on internal buyers’ perception of the issue: First, mobilizing external stakeholders when internal support for the issue is low; second, buffering external expectations when they are incongruent with internal requirements; and third, moderating between external stakeholders and internal buyers when issues are difficult to implement. Our contribution is to explain why issue sellers’ role vis-à-vis internal buyers and external stakeholders can be better understood as that of “issue brokers” when they navigate strategically between external stakeholder expectations and organizational goals. This advances the issue-selling literature and research on brokerage roles and contributes to individual-level research on CSR. <br /

    Heparin/UiO-66 nanocomposite: Synergistic catalytic Lewis and Brønsted acids for efficient monosaccharides conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

    International audienceA new bio-based catalyst was fabricated by synthesizing a zirconium(III) (Zr)-based metal-organic framework, UiO-66, in the presence of natural sulfonic acid, heparin (Hep) oligosaccharide. Various characterization techniques were utilized to validate the successful synthesis of the nanocomposite, Hep/UiO-66. The catalytic efficiency of the resulting nanocomposite was assessed in the acid-catalyzed conversion of mono-saccharides (fructose and glucose) to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Optimization of reaction variables using Response Surface Method revealed that using 34 % of the catalyst at 100 and 110 °C for 30 and 50 min led to high yields of 98.5 % and 96.5 % for fructose and glucose conversion to HMF, respectively. The catalyst showed good recyclability, sustaining its productivity over 4 cycles. Comparative analyses with pristine Hep and UiO-66 indicated the superior performance of the catalyst, highlighting the synergistic effect between the Lewis and Brønsted acids originating from UiO-66 and Hep on the catalytic activity

    A 3D morpho-space of sepal geometry reveals the importance of organ curvature

    International audienceHow robust three-dimension (3D) organ shape emerges during morphogenesis is a fundamental question in biology. Addressing this question requires a comprehensive quantification of organ geometry in 3D. To tackle these issues, we considered the sepal of Arabidopsis as a model. Using a unique pipeline allowing to recover 3D sepal morphology, we analysed fifteen mutants affected in different pathways. The results of a Principal Component Analysis reveal sepal curvature as an important parameter accounting for variations in sepal morphology within genotypes. Unexpectedly, despite genetic homogeneity of the wild-type plants and reproducible culture conditions, we found a significant level of variability in sepal morphology. Our data also show that sepal shape from wild-type plants is more robust (less variable) than sepal size, hinting to a possible selective pressure on shape parameters

    Removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ from aqueous solutions by bionanosorbents: Isotherm, thermodynamic and mechanistic studies

    International audienceThe present work presents the efficiency and the limit in using bionanosorbents (cellulose, chitin and modified chitin nanocrystals) for the sorption of metal ions M2+ (M = Ni and Cd) in batch systems. Bionanosorbents were extracted from plants and shrimp shells, two available and low-cost materials. If cellulose and chitin nanocrystals did not efficiently remove metals in the experimental conditions of this work, the surface-modified chitin exhibited enhancement for the Ni2+ and Cd2+ adsorption capacity than original chitin nanocrystals. The Langmuir and Freundlich models fitted well to the experimental data from which the maximum adsorption capacity was 139.2 mg Ni g-1 and 38.4 mg Cd g-1. Regarding the Gibbs free energy and the Hall parameter, the sorption of Ni2+ and Cd2+ were spontaneous and favourable for pH around the neutrality. This corroborates the examination of IR spectra of oxidized chitin nanocrystals before and after the sorption process from which the metal removal mechanism was mainly attributed to the formation of complexes and ion exchanges of the bionanosorbent and metal ions. Element mappings of the bionanosorbents after sorption revealed a homogeneous distribution of Cd(II)

    Während in Österreich um Leo Perutz (1882–1957) fünf Jahre nach seinem Tod Stille herrscht, bekommt 1962 sein Roman Der Marques de Bolibar in Frankreich die einzige literarische Auszeichnung, die seiner Arbeit je verliehen wurde. Es handelt sich um den „Prix Nocturne“, der gerade gestiftet wurde, um ein vergessenes phantastisches Werk wieder ins Licht zu stellen. Einer dessen Hauptorganisatoren ist Roland Stragliati, ein Bewunderer des Schriftstellers, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt in Verbindung mit seiner Witwe, Grete, steht und versucht, die Übersetzung seiner Texte wieder in Gang zu bringen. Die Beziehungen zwischen Perutz und Frankreich gleichen diesem Preis, der von einem auf Anonymität bedachten Jury vergeben wurde: Viele der Mitwirkenden sind unentdeckt geblieben, und dennoch zeichnet sich um den Schriftsteller ein Netzwerk wechselseitiger Vermittlungen ab, das zum Teil noch zu erforschen ist. Während man die Übersetzer der jüngsten Zeit leicht ausfindig machen kann, dürften die zahlreichen Vermittler aus der Vorkriegszeit nämlich nicht alle erfasst sein. Ihre Wiederentdeckung ermöglicht es auch, den persönlichen Anteil in Perutz’ Beziehungen zu Frankreich zu beleuchten, was wiederum dazu einlädt, sein Interesse für die französische Kultur und deren Einfluss auf seine Werke neu zu bewerten.En 1962, alors qu’en Autriche, le silence s’est fait autour de Leo Perutz (1882–1957) cinq ans après sa mort, son roman Le Marquis de Bolibar reçoit en France la seule distinction littéraire qui ait jamais couronné son travail. Les liens entre Perutz et la France sont à l’image de ce prix décerné par un jury soucieux d’anonymat : beaucoup d’acteurs sont restés dans l’ombre, et pourtant, un réseau de médiations croisées se dessine autour de l’écrivain, dont une partie reste à explorer. S’il est facile de repérer les traducteurs les plus contemporains, les nombreux passeurs d’avant-guerre ne sont en effet sans doute pas tous répertoriés. Les redécouvrir permet aussi de mettre à jour la part personnelle entrant dans les relations de Perutz avec la France, ce qui invite à reconsidérer son intérêt pour la culture française et la manière dont celle-ci irrigue ses œuvres

    The Glocalization of Sport: A Research Field for Social Innovation

    International audiencehis article explores the emergence of the concept of glocalization in contemporary societies and more precisely, the glocalization of sport to highlight a social innovation borne through the interaction between global dynamics and local specificities in the development of sport. The glocalization, considered as a theorical framework to rethink local social innovation which answered to the limit of the globalization, is examined in this article through an in-depth bibliographic analysis conducted using the Lillocat metasearch engine (covering 354 articles since 1992 across 11 thematic areas, 29 of which are related to sports). The use of IRaMuTeQ software version 0.7 alpha2 (Interface for Multidimensional Text and Questionnaire Analysis) enabled comprehensive textual and lexical analyses, including frequency analyses, hierarchical classifications, and principal component analyses (PCA). These analyses were presented in the form of figures such as histograms, dendrograms, and word clouds, thereby facilitating the identification of lexical co-occurrence relationships and the understanding of emerging trends. Findings reveal that glocalization enables sports organizations to integrate global strategies with local cultural identities, fostering fan engagement, economic sustainability, and cultural diversity. Global events such as the FIFA World Cup, the NBA’s international expansion, and the Tour de France illustrate how global frameworks adapt to local contexts. Glocalization emerges as a strategic driver of social innovation, balancing internationalization with localized adaptation. This study provides insights for researchers and practitioners, considering glocalization as a theorical framework useful for the analysis of a local social innovation in the context of globalization and sport as a propitious field of research
