Breaking through Microbial Defenses─Organic Acid-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents as a Neoteric Strategy in Bacterial Biofilms, Persister, and Fungal Control
International audienceThis study explores the adaptation of organic acid-based deep eutectic solvents (OA-DESs) as effective antimicrobial agents. Having already demonstrated their efficacy against planktonic bacteria in our previous research, herein we investigate their impact on more complex microbial forms, including biofilms, persister cells, and fungi (both human pathogenic and phytopathogenic). Our experiments revealed that OA-DESs effectively eradicated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli in the biofilms, inducing significant morphological changes. A three-log-unit reduction was observed for most OA-DESs at concentrations below 1% (v/v), a remarkable achievement for this class of materials. Additionally, with only one exception, OA-DESs did not promote persister cells formation, underscoring their potential for complete eradication of biofilm-enveloped bacteria. In another part of our study, OA-DESs were compared to conventional DESs against Candida albicans, Candida auris, and Aspergillus fumigatus. Results showed that while individual DES components exhibited minimal activity, their combination effectively inhibited fungal growth and induced substantial morphological changes. Lastly, OA-DESs were tested against the phytopathogens Zymoseptoria tritici and Venturia inaequalis. Though their activity was less pronounced compared to pathogenic strains, most OA-DESs inhibited the growth of both fungi at the highest tested concentrations. Despite the broad scope of this investigation, we believe this work provides valuable insights into the potential of DESs as antimicrobial agents, offering a strong foundation for future research and innovation in this field
Bridging the Gap in Physical Activity and Sport Among Women University Students : Motivational and Practical Insights for Effective Promotion
International audienceWomen’s participation in physical activity (PA) and sport remains lower than that of men, with specific challenges persisting into young adulthood. This study aims to better understand the diverse engagement patterns and motivations of women university students in order to inform targeted, gender-sensitive approaches to PA and sport promotion. A survey was conducted among 2,071 women students aged 18–25 years (M = 20.01, SD = 1.33) from 16 European universities. Principal component analysis and clustering techniques revealed two main participation styles: “free” (C1 and C2) and “organized” (C3 and C4). The “free” group preferred low-intensity, flexible activities, often self-directed, and supported by digital tools, while the “organized” group thrived in structured, socially supportive environments such as clubs or team sports with coaching. Motivational factors varied considerably: C1 participants did not prioritize a single motivational factor, C2 were primarily motivated by physical condition and appearance, while a combination of enjoyment, affiliation, and psychological well-being drove C3 and C4 participants. The study highlights the need for universities to offer diverse, flexible PA options that cater to different preferences, from autonomous activities facilitated by digital innovations to structured programs that promote social belonging and accountability. Universities can create supportive environments that encourage sustained PA and sport engagement by tailoring interventions to individual motivations and using inclusive communication strategies. These findings provide valuable insights for promoting active lifestyles among women university students and for advancing gender-sensitive approaches to PA and sport promotion
CO2 Purification of Industrial Flue Gas : The Role of Copper and Carbonate Species in the Selective Catalytic Reduction Process
International audienceCopper and carbonates can play an important role for NO SCR by CO under oxidative and wet conditions towards promoting lower temperature of CO oxidation and higher N 2 selectivity and activity.• The Redox treatments influenced Copper and Carbonates species differently:The redox CO-CO 2 promoted the formation of additional active surface carbonates (mainly polydentate) shifting the N 2 yield to lower temperature. Additionally, Cu 2 O phase was detected promoting enhanced CO oxidation. The redox CO-O 2 facilitated the formation of CoAl 2 O 4 spinel structure with the removal of carbonates and enhanced Copper cobalt interaction leading to the highest selectivity towards N 2 Yield for CoCuAl Air R CO-O 2 sample.</p
CO2 Purification of Industrial Flue Gas : Effect of Physico-Chemical Properties Obtained by Different Preparation Methods on CoCuAl Oxide for the Selective Catalytic Reduction Process
International audienceHydrothermal treatment of CoCuAl LDH precursors significantly increases catalyst surface area, crystallinity, and active site dispersion compared to classical method with superior catalytic activity over all methods.• Copper species in hydrothermally prepared catalysts are more easily reduced (lower TPR reduction temperature), while cobalt species become harder to reduce due to stronger Co-Al bonding and the formation of more stable mixed oxides.• Mono-and polydentate carbonates decompose between 350-700 °C and can promote NO-SCR by CO by generating reactive intermediates and facilitating redox cycling.</p
