An Exploratory Randomized Controlled Study on the Effects of a Brief Mindfulness Intervention with High-Intensity Training on Mindfulness Skills and Well-Being in Runners: Brief mindfulness meditation

International audienceObjectives: The effects of mindfulness-based interventions associated with a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program on mindfulness skills and well-being need further investigation. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to investigate the effect of a brief mindfulness meditation (BMM) intervention associated with a HIIT-based running program on mindfulness skills and well-being. Method: Fifty-five runners were randomly assigned to BMM or control groups, combined with the same HIIT-based running program. The BMM group benefited from an 8-week BMM intervention. Mindfulness Inventory for Sport was completed at baseline (T0), 4 (T1), and 8 weeks (T2). The Diagnofeel, measuring the manifestations and regulations of well-being, was assessed at T0 and T2. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted. Results: An overall increase of awareness was observed between T0 and T2. In terms of refocusing, a time*group interaction was discovered (p = 0.03, η² = 0.07). Refocusing improved for the BMM group between T0 and T2 (p < 0.01). The BMM group had a higher refocusing level compared to the control group at T2 (p = 0.01). Regarding well-being, social relation (manifestation) and pleasure (regulation) increased between T0 and T2 in the BMM group. Conclusions: This RCT showed the beneficial effects of a BMM intervention on the ability to quickly refocus attention on performance-related cues. These potential benefits could go beyond the athletic field, as the BMM intervention might positively impact the way that runners manifested and regulated their well-being in their daily lives

Explaining the long-term care insurance puzzle: The role of preferences for correlation and for quality of life over wealth

    No full text
International audienceThe paper investigates the role of two demand-side determinants of long-term care insurance: correlation preference and relative preference for quality of life over wealth. We model the effect of those preferences on the joint decision to buy long-term care and long-term care insurance contract. We test the model using data from a laboratory experiment in France. While the experimental results offer only partial support for the theoretical predictions—specifically, correlation aversion does not account for over-insurance, our analysis provides evidence that correlation seeking and the relative preference for quality of life over wealth explain the limited uptake of long-term care insurance

Two-dimensional perovskites with maximum symmetry enable exciton diffusion length exceeding 2 micrometers

Realizing semiconductors with high symmetry of their crystallographic structures has been a virtue of inorganic materials and has resulted in novel physical behaviors. In contrast, hybrid (organic and inorganic) crystals such as two-dimensional metal halide perovskites exhibit much lower crystal symmetry due to in-plane or out of plane octahedral distortions. Despite their amazing ability for photoinduced light emission at room temperature, the Achilles' heel of this attractive class of 2D materials for optoelectronics remains the poor control and lack of performance for charge carrier transport. Inspired by the tremendous charge carrier properties of the 3D cubic perovskite phase of FAPbI3 and combining the use of the appropriate cage cation, the spacer molecule and the temperature and rate of crystallization, we report a new series of FA-based layered two-dimensional perovskites that exhibits the highest theoretically predicted symmetry with a tetragonal P4/mmm space group, resulting in no octahedral distortion in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions. These 2D perovskites present the shortest interlayer distances (4 angstrom), which results in systematically lower bandgaps (1.7 to 1.8 eV). Finally, the absence of octahedral distortions, results in an exciton diffusion length of 2.5 μm, and a diffusivity of 4.4 cm2s-1, both of which are an order of magnitude larger compared to previously reported 2D perovskites and on par with monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides
