Guillaume Costeley (1531-1606), l’homme aux deux portraits

    No full text

International audience"The Apothéoses by François Couperin : musical portraits or aesthetic manifest". – Published in 1724 and 1725, Couperin’s Apothéoses are two singular musical portraits that, in both form and intent, go beyond the numerous title pieces that punctuate his harpsichord music. Dedicated to two emblematic figures of the 17th century, Corelli and Lully, these works translate into sound all that these musicians represent in the aesthetics of the time. In a mythological landscape tinged with contemporary references, the two – and the musical styles they embody – cross paths, sizing each other up, then reconcile in a “Peace of Parnassus” that seals the union of tastes previously deemed irreconcilable. Beyond painting and poetry, this is the apotheosis of a manifesto that Couperin defended throughout his career.

    No full text
International audienceBetween 1666 and 1682, when the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye was the main residence of Louis XIV’s court, unique musical practices developed within royal performances – ballets, divertissements and musical tragedies – whose printed librettos preserve valuable clues. These sources, at the crossroads of the tradition of court ballet and of the emerging opera, reveal specific instrumental arrangements, structured around the different ‘bands’ of the King’s Music, and significantly different from those in use at the Royal Academy of Music. This study draws mainly on the librettos of the performances given at Saint-Germain – supplemented by the registers of the King’s Household, the editions of the État de la France, and musical sources – to examine the sound architecture specific to court theatre. Information concerning the number of vocal and instrumental participants, their hierarchy, their functions and their spatial arrangement suggests a complex orchestral imagination, combining tradition, innovation and adaptation to the visual and acoustic constraints of the performance spaces. By examining the organizational aspects of these arrangements – in terms of both music and use of space in the auditorium and on stage – this study aims to provide a better understanding of how an ephemeral yet structuring sound universe is created. It highlights the diversity of ‘music points’, the interactions between the different instrumental bands and the effects produced by these configurations on the aesthetics of the performances. It thus offers a reinterpretation of musical and theatrical sources in light of courtly logic, while providing a new understanding of the role of sound in the genesis of French opera.

Measuring Climate Performance Against National Commitments: A Gap-to-Target Indicator for the Kyoto Protocol, First and Second NDCs

    No full text
This paper introduces a new indicator to assess countries' climate performance by comparing their effective greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with the levels implied by their commitments under the Kyoto Protocol and the first and second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Existing climate indices track emissions or policy ambition but do not provide a harmonised, cross-country measure of the distance to pledged mitigation targets. Building on the literature on distance-to-target metrics, we develop a simple Gap-to-Target indicator applicable across successive commitment cycles.Using data for 135 countries over 1990-2024, we compute annual measures of alignment with national pledges and document systematic patterns across income groups, regions, and commitment periods. Descriptive trends reveal a widening disconnect between rising ambition and realised emissions, especially under the second NDC cycle. Dynamic system-GMM estimations show that economic development, renewable energy deployment, environmental expenditure, fiscal capacity, and climate vulnerability are key determinants of countries' ability to meet their commitments. The Gap-to-Target indicator offers policymakers and international financial institutions a transparent tool to track performance, identify structural implementation gaps, and better target climate finance, and it can be extended to other environmental commitments such as biodiversity or land degradation neutrality. The indicator can also be extended to the upcoming 2025 NDCs and future commitment cycles, enhancing its relevance for long-term climate governance. With appropriate sub-national data, it could further be adapted to regional and local authorities, supporting the decentralisation of climate action monitoring.</p

Statistical olfactory learning in honey bees

    No full text
International audienceStatistical learning is a cognitive process for detecting regularities in sensory inputs typically presented as strings of sounds, shapes, or objects, enabling species to predict future events, thereby guiding decision-making and behavior. Such an adaptive trait has been demonstrated in vertebrates, including human and non-human primates, birds, and dogs. It remains unclear whether invertebrates, which possess smaller and simpler neural systems than vertebrates, can extract statistical information from sensory inputs. Here, we show for the first time that honey bees are able to learn and recall the temporal (statistical) structure of an olfactory stimulus. These results suggest that statistical learning is a fundamental component of a conserved cognitive toolkit present, even in invertebrates

Insights into extracellular matrix enzymes: assessing purity, oligomerization, and enzymatic activity using capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry

    No full text
International audienceThe extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex network of macromolecules that play essential structural and functional roles in tissue organization and cellular processes1,2. It undergoes continuous remodelling, mediated by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), serine proteases e.g. human neutrophil elastase (HNE), and hyaluronidases (Hyal)3,4. These enzymes also contribute to pathological tissue remodelling, leading to inflammation, tumor progression, and metastasis3,5. Understanding their molecular characteristics, mechanisms, and the development of potential inhibitors remains a significant challenge6. Despite growing interest, there is limited literature detailing their structures, spatial conformations, oligomerization and physicochemical properties. Additionally, existing literature lacks information regarding the quality and purity of samples used in catalytic and affinity assays. The aim of this work is to clarify the effect of macromolecular crowding on hyaluronidase inhibitors, assess the purity of enzyme preparations used, and gain insight into the degree of oligomerization of ECM enzymes

Cis-aconitate therapy protects against influenza mortality by dual targeting of viral polymerase and ERK/AKT/NF-κB signaling

    No full text
International audienceInfluenza virus poses a significant global health challenge, causing approximately 500,000 deaths annually. Its ability to evade antiviral treatments and vaccine-induced immunity underscores the need for novel therapeutic approaches. Our study identifies cis-aconitate (cisaco), a mitochondria-derived metabolite, as a potent dual-action agent against influenza, independently of its metabolic derivative, itaconate. Cis-aco impairs viral polymerase activity, suppressing viral mRNA expression and protein synthesis to inhibit replication across a range of influenza subtypes. This antiviral efficacy is confirmed in ex vivo human airway and lung organotypic models. Beyond its antiviral properties, cis-aco exhibits potent anti-inflammatory effects, disrupting key inflammatory cascades and reducing the secretion of inflammatory mediators. In a mouse model of influenza pneumonia, cis-aco mitigates viral replication, inflammation, and immune cell activation, significantly improving survival. Notably, its efficacy persists even when administered at later stages of infection, when oseltamivir/Tamiflu® is no longer effective. These findings position cis-aco as a promising influenza treatment, combining antiviral and anti-inflammatory benefits within a clinically relevant timeframe
