Sexuality and the Arts:Implications for Existential Psychologists
Psychologists, including existential psychologists, have always taken an interest in sexuality and the arts, but rarely on the connection between them. This chapter identifies many of those psychologists who have explored this connection, as well as a few writers from the humanities who have shared this interest. It includes, in its purview, the study of aesthetics, especially what Darwin called “aesthetic selection,” which compliments natural selection in human evolution. The study of sexuality and the arts within the scope of existential psychology offers several paths of further exploration and mapping beyond the history outlined within this chapter. These routes of inquiry can include aesthetics, phenomenology, and intentionality, as potential ways forward for the current and next generation of researchers

'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun': Feminist Camp Gothic
This chapter sets out to define Gothic camp and to examine its feminist potential and its relation to Comic Gothic. It concludes that Camp provides a means of understanding moments of humour in the Gothic characterised by a queer form of self-reflexivity. This, in its turn, modulates the affective responses to pleasurable fear and interrogates Comic Gothic with a fresh critical eye. The feminist possibilities of such a formulation of Comic Gothic as feminist camp Gothic are therefore a continuation of those additive and accretive qualities which characterise camp as a loving reclamation of the detritus left on the Gothic cusp
Vigilante Groups and Jack the Ripper
This chapter will assess the significance of vigilante groups to the investigation into the Whitechapel Murders, with a particular emphasis on the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee and the central involvement it seemed to have in the public perception of the investigation into these crimes. Not only will this analysis highlight the weaknesses of the police investigation into the killings in the Autumn of 1888, but it will also ascertain the strength of opinion towards the ‘new’ police amongst Victorian society and what Victorians suggested as viable alternatives in the hunt for Jack the Ripper

‘The Man behind the Tan’: Ken’s Trumpian Absurdity
This chapter critically examines the construction of Ken’s masculinity in Barbie (2023), juxtaposing it with the performative, excessive, and often absurd masculinity associated with Donald Trump and his supporter base. The authors argue that Ken’s aestheticised masculinity parallels the ‘camp’ and exaggerated hegemonic masculinity of Trump, blending absurdity with real sociopolitical influence. Drawing on theories of masculinity, radicalisation, and identity, the chapter highlights how Ken’s transformation reflects dangerous cultural shifts towards patriarchal dominance, mirroring real-world threats to democracy. It concludes by emphasising the necessity of sustained vigilance and systemic action to counteract and deradicalise such toxic masculinities, both in Barbie Land and beyond
