Overcoming the disconnect between species interaction networks and biodiversity conservation
International audienceDecision-makers need to act now to halt biodiversity loss, and ecologists must provide them with relevant species interaction indicators to inform about community-and ecosystem-level changes. Yet, the integration of ecological networks into conservation is still virtually non-existent. Here, we argue that existing data and methodologies are sufficient to generate network information usable for conservation, and to begin overcoming existing barriers to the integration of network information and biodiversity decision-making. Interaction network indicators must meet criteria important to decision-makers and be tied to specific conservation goals, which requires academics to better engage with practitioners. We use network robustness as an example of an already applicable indicator, and showcase its potential with a reusable workflow to inform decision-making
Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial metabolic syndrome characterized by involuntary, progressive skeletal muscle loss, with or without fat loss, that is not reversed by conventional nutrition and leads to functional decline. It involves systemic inflammation, elevated energy expenditure, and disrupted protein homeostasis, contributing to poor treatment outcomes and reduced survival. While its clinical burden is well recognized, the role of biological sex remains underexplored. Most studies have focused on male cohorts or ignored sex-specific analyses, potentially missing key differences. The first objective of my thesis was to conduct a comprehensive literature review to provide an overview of the current state of the field. Our analysis revealed that the prevalence of cancer cachexia is consistently lower in female compared to male cancer patients. However, we also highlighted a significant gap in the literature: the lack of molecular evidence explaining these observed sex differences. The second objective of my thesis was to perform a time-course analysis of cancer cachexia progression in male and female Apc mice, a model characterized by intestinal polyp development. We hypothesized that cachexia progresses in a sex-dependent manner, with males exhibiting earlier onset and more severe symptoms, and that estrogens may contribute to the relative protection in females. We observed clear sex differences in cachexia progression in Apc mice, with 20-week-old females largely protected from muscle mass and force loss despite comparable polyp burden. These differences were not associated with sex differences in classical muscle atrophy pathways but may instead reflect sex differences in the regulation of protein synthesis and hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. Although both sexes exhibited hypogonadism, ovariectomy did not exacerbate the cachectic phenotype in female Apc mice, suggesting the involvement of protective mechanisms that are independent of a direct effect of circulating female sex hormones. The third objective of my thesis was to investigate the role of neuroinflammation in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass and function. We hypothesized that neuroinflammation, a feature of cancer cachexia, contributes to muscle catabolism by enhancing the expression of glucocorticoid-responsive genes and impairing muscle contractile performance. Intracerebroventricular administration of human IL-1β into the third ventricle of wild-type male mice elevated serum corticosterone levels and induced the expression of glucocorticoid-responsive genes in skeletal muscle, without affecting muscle function. In contrast, female mice showed minimal changes in serum corticosterone and glucocorticoid-responsive gene expression, yet exhibited a reduction in muscle force. These findings suggest that neuroinflammation impairs muscle function through distinct, sex-specific mechanisms, with females showing functional decline independent of systemic glucocorticoid signaling. Together these findings underscore the need to consider sex as a critical biological variable in cancer cachexia and broader fields of research.
On the uncertainty in predicting the stochastic gravitational wave background from compact binary coalescences
International audienceThe stochastic gravitational-wave background from compact binary coalescences is expected to be the first detectable stochastic signal via cross-correlation searches with terrestrial detectors. It encodes the cumulative merger history of stellar-mass binaries across cosmic time, offering a unique probe of the high-redshift Universe. However, predicting the background spectrum is challenging due to numerous modeling choices, each with distinct uncertainties. In this work, we present a comprehensive forecast of the astrophysical gravitational-wave background from binary black holes, binary neutron stars, and neutron star-black hole systems. We systematically assess the impact of uncertainties in population properties, waveform features, and the modeling of the merger rate evolution. By combining all uncertainties, we derive credible bands for the background spectrum, spanning approximately an order of magnitude in the fractional energy density. These results provide thorough predictions to facilitate the interpretation of current upper limits and future detections
Enhancing Privacy and Robustness in Federated Learning with Local Data Distribution Invariance and Byzantine-Resilient Aggregation
International audienceFederated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising paradigm for decentralized machine learning, enabling multiple clients to collaboratively train a global model without sharing their raw data. Despite its privacy-preserving design, FL remains vulnerable to privacy leakage through inference attacks, such as membership inference, and to integrity threats like Byzantine behaviors that can degrade model reliability. To address these risks, we propose Local Data Privatization Preprocessing (LDPP), a lightweight client-side method that enforces differential privacy while preserving the statistical properties of local data. LDPP operates through a three-stage process: (i) transforming data into a standardized representation (normal or uniform), (ii) injecting calibrated noise using differential privacy mechanisms, such as Laplace or Gaussian distributions, and (iii) applying an inverse transformation to asymptotically recover the original data distribution. We formally prove that LDPP satisfies ϵ-differential privacy and maintains key distributional characteristics. Additionally, LDPP can be combined with robust aggregation techniques, such as Krum, to strengthen defense against adversarial tampering. Comprehensive experiments in EMNIST and MedMNIST datasets demonstrate that LDPP significantly reduces the success of membership inference attacks and improves robustness under label-flipping scenarios while preserving high model accuracy. These findings position LDPP as a scalable and practical solution to improve both privacy and robustness in federated learning frameworks
Global Reactive Synthesis and additive manufacturing: in-situ synthesis of near net-shape Aluminium Matrix Composites
International audienceThe in-situ synthesis of Aluminium Matrix Composites (AMC) via the Global ReactiveSynthesis (GRS) has been demonstrated in the recent years as a promising approach tocontrol reinforcement size and distribution, as well as to obtain sharp matrix/reinforcementinterface. Based on the use of chemical precursors, the GRS is driven by controlled reactivityand thermodynamics to in-situ form both the matrix and the reinforcement under basicgeometries (cylinders or plates). It has been applied successfully to conventional AMCslike Al-TiC and Al-TiB2. It also opens the field of new class of AMCs and the most advancedstudies have been focused on Al-Tau3 AMC, where Tau3 is a ternary borocarbide(Al3B48C2). We will first detail the rules and conditions for AMCs to be obtained by theGRS route, as well as a comparison in terms of mechanical properties and microstructurewith conventional AMCs.More recently, the GRS route of Al-Tau3 AMC was adapted to the Laser Powder Bed Fusion(LPBF) Additive Manufacturing technique to get near net shape and complex geometries. The main challenges were to adapt the precursors powder to the criteria of LPBF in terms offlowability and spreading and to achieve the in-situ chemical reaction, given the high rate ofheating and cooling and the very small time in temperature imposed by the LPBF process. The talk will present dense AMCs from Al-Tau3 to Al-nano(AlB2) with promising mechanicalproperties. We will also discuss the influence of different heat treatment parameters onthe final phases and microstructures
Lithium dynamics. Global trends and local spatializations
International audienceIn this special issue, we aim to open a debate to critically examine the contradictory roles of lithium in the energytransition at various scales. The articles in this issue emphasize the interrelations between markets and theenvironmental, social, economic, and geopolitical dimensions of the lithium industry. Through case studies fromthe Global South and North including Chile, Bolivia, Portugal, Canada, Australia, the United States, the UK andZimbabwe, the articles highlight the contested landscapes of lithium extraction and production and how theseincreasingly multiply, become both similar and dissimilar, if not unequal. They reveal both the material realitiesof lithium’s role in decarbonization processes and the expectations and imaginaries that shape its governance andindustrial strategies. From tensions arising from environmental imaginaries and notions of green extractivism, this special issue seeks to open a debate about the geographies of power, opportunities, and impacts thatcharacterize lithium’s central role in the energy transitions. In doing so, we question the promises of developmentand sustainability associated with lithium. Ultimately, we present an academic discussion on lithiumframed within the broader socio-technical and geopolitical contexts in which it unfolds
