International audienceThis paper presents a synthesis and an analysis of a recent debate on the integration of ethical risks into the management and continuous improvement of performance in Industry 4.0. The aim of the debate, which brought together around thirty French and Canadian industrial engineering researchers and was structured around three main questions, was to compare ideas on the subject and raise awareness of the urgent need for managers concerned with guaranteeing the performance of their systems to be provided with tools enabling these risks to be taken into account operationally in their management and continuous improvement processes; in addition to the regulatory frameworks in place at political and strategic levels, the scope of which does not include the industrial system. After a brief review of current performance improvement practice, the objectives of the debate and the context in which it was held are presented. This is followed by a synthesis and analysis of the responses collected, which underline the need to revisit the notion of performance by going beyond its Taylorian and short-term framework, and to show that taking into account the ethical risks of Industry 4.0 guarantees improved performance in the long term.

Differential cross-section measurements of coherent production of singly and doubly resonant top-quark in WWbbWWbb events with one lepton at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    No full text
International audienceThis paper presents differential cross-section measurements of events containing a charged lepton, missing transverse momentum, two bb-jets, and two light jets, consistent with the W+WbbˉW^{+}W^{-}b\bar{b} final state. The analysis is based on 140 fb1^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (2015-2018). Differential cross-sections are unfolded at particle level for a range of kinematic observables and in three kinematic regions. Both regions and observables are optimised for sensitivity to the interference between W+WbbˉW^{+}W^{-}b\bar{b} produced with singly and doubly resonant top quarks. Results are compared with various theoretical predictions. Significant discrepancies are observed in regions sensitive to the interference between singly and doubly resonant top-quark production. The unfolded results provide new information about the modelling of interference and off-shell effects of the W+WbbˉW^{+}W^{-}b\bar{b} final state, improving the understanding of top-quark production mechanisms and providing new inputs for future Monte Carlo generator development

Electrochemical Long‐Term Stability of a Choline Chloride‐Based Deep Eutectic Solvent for Silver Recycling

    No full text
International audienceDeep eutectic solvents (DES) are investigated since 20 years as ionic liquids alternative for electrochemical applications due to their reduced toxicity and cost. Metal electrowinning, is a process which is especially attractive for DES, since it allows the replacement the polluting state‐of‐the‐art hydrometallurgical routes. Though, the solvent interest is conditioned to the DES long term stability under operating conditions. In this article experimental proofs of the long term stability of Propeline 1:3 both in storage and under electrochemical operation conditions, is provided using silver electroleaching‐ electrodeposition process as a model electrochemical system for the DES aging study. The solvent long term stability is evaluated during prolonged storage without electrochemical stress, providing a baseline for long‐term usability. The electrochemical stability window of Propeline 1:3 is then determined, and its electrochemical degradation is forced for days in order 1) to identify degradation products and 2) to understand degradation mechanism that DES can encounter during extreme operating conditions. Finally, Propeline 1:3 long‐term stability under operation conditions is evaluated using different electroleaching‐electrodeposition current densities by the monitoring of degradation product formation. The impact of DES aging on the performances of silver electrowinning is assessed through a comparative analysis of fresh and aged electrolyte

International audienceThe Har-Us-Nuur fault corresponds to one of the longest (>500 km) strike-slip fault in Mongolian Altai. Although the fault clearly affects Quaternary deposits, no major instrumental or historical earthquake is associated to it and only a few morphotectonic and paleoseismological analyses have been carried out to date. In this paper, we analyze a previously undescribed surface rupture in the southern section of the Har-Us-Nuur fault along which we study a 20 km long section of it in detail. A morphotectonic analysis yielded a minimum slip rate of 0.32 ± 0.04 mm.yr −1 , while paleosismological investigations suggest a mean recurrence interval of about 8.1 ± 3.4 kyr from the characterization of three surface rupturing events that occurred over the past 23 kyr. These preliminary results suggest that the Har-Us-Nuur fault slip rate is inframillimetric and therefore lower than previous published estimates. They also suggest that the fault is able to produce major earthquakes (Mw ≥7.5) separated by very long period of quiescence.

Granular materials have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their wide range of constitutive behaviors under various loading paths. Multiscale modeling has proven to be an effective approach for capturing these behaviors by linking the macroscopic properties of granular materials to their underlying microstructural characteristics. The H-model, developed within a multiscale framework, extends the micro-directional model by introducing an intermediate scale—elementary hexagonal patterns of adjoining particles. This model enables a natural description of diverse constitutive features and provides clear insights into the potential of such multiscale approaches. This thesis focuses on the development of the 2D H-model, which, in its original form, cannot reach the critical state due to its inability to capture mesostructural reorganization via contact gain and loss. With the advancement of discrete element simulations, microscopic insights into the critical state have emerged, highlighting its nature as a dynamic equilibrium of configurational transformations. To address this limitation, the H-model is enhanced to incorporate mesostructural transformations, enabling it to reach the critical state under biaxial loading conditions. The H-model is further extended to investigate the mechanical response of cemented granular materials, leading to the development of the H-bond model. Most existing constitutive models follow phenomenological approaches that inevitably overlook the microstructural mechanisms occurring at the scale of bonded grains. Inspired by the H-model, the multiscale approach enables simulation of cemented material behavior under various loading paths by describing the elementary mechanisms between bonded grains. In particular, the model explores how local bond failure processes influence the macroscopic response of the entire specimen, depending on the characteristics of bond strength. Finally, the proposed multiscale approach is applied to a real geotechnical problem: the Hermitage landslide. In this application, the H-bond model is used to define the microscale constitutive behavior within a representative volume element (RVE), which is then integrated into an explicit finite element code. This provides valuable insights into complex engineering problems and underscores the capability of multiscale modeling to bridge microstructural understanding and large-scale geotechnical behavior.

Downslope solifluction movements and permafrost degradation in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau revealed by InSAR

    No full text
International audienceInSAR measurements reveal widespread and high-amplitude permafrost-related solifluction movements across the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). This raises questions about the mechanisms driving these slope processes and, more specifically, the relationships between cyclic soil expansion during freezing and irreversible downslope motions during thawing. In this study, we develop and apply a methodology to map solifluction motions using multi-temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data and characterize their amplitudes and spatial distributions at a regional scale. This method decomposes line-of-sight InSAR time series into pluri-annual velocities and seasonally reversible surface displacements that are then inverted into motions parallel and normal to the local steepest slope. Pluri-annual downslope and subsidence velocities in the northeastern QTP are analyzed and cross-correlated with slope-normal seasonal cycles and the slope across unconsolidated sediments and indurated bedrock colluvium separately. Our analysis indicates significant downslope velocities ( 4 mm/yr), with varying sensitivities to slope. Overall, downslope velocities exceed those expected from seasonal frost creep alone and are likely triggered by basal soil shearing during the thawing of the ice-rich layers. Downslope velocities are particularly high for indurated bedrock colluvium, which exhibit low-amplitude slope-normal seasonal cycles compared to unconsolidated sediments. We explain these differences by variations in regolith layer thicknesses, which impact the downslope deformation depths. Measurements of subsidence and amplified seasonal cycles through time indicate ongoing permafrost degradation and ice loss within the QTP, directly impacting slope stability, primarily by intensifying seasonal basal solifluction processes

Planetary dynamos driven by semi-convection in stratified layers

    No full text
International audienceStably stratified fluid layers are common in gaseous planets, stellar interiors, and planetary cores, and have long been considered incapable of sustaining dynamo action. Here, we show that semi-convection – driven by a destabilising thermal gradient within an overall stably stratified medium – can, in fact, give rise to self-sustained magnetic fields. Motivated by recent models suggesting that large portions of Jupiter and Saturn may be semi-convective, we performed direct numerical simulations in spherical shells, operating in the planetary-relevant regime of low magnetic Prandtl numbers. From a primary semi-convection instability, a layered convection state spontaneously develops, consisting of a convective region beneath a stably stratified layer of comparable thickness. Fluid motions in this convective region are strong enough to produce magnetic fields with key features observed in planetary dynamos, including strong dipolarity, realistic field strengths, and spectral characteristics. These results provide the first direct evidence that semi-convection can drive dynamo action in stably stratified regions of gas giants and stellar interiors, with important implications for understanding astrophysical magnetic field generation
