Guidance and support of women in engineering programs at Universidad Tecnologica de Bolivar

    No full text
Gender equality is one of the sustainable development goals. In STEM areas, it is a requirement to expand and improve women's careers. To increase the participation of women in STEM it is not enough to attract more young women to these programs. It is necessary to provide orientation during the academic programs and ensure safe and rewarding environments so that women can succeed in their studies. The Faculty of Engineering of Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar has gender gaps in most of its programs and several strategies are being implemented to overcome this situation. This paper analyzes five factors to guide and support women in engineering programs: academic success, protection of women, scholarships and financial assistance, international mobility, and leadership. We present several activities and strategies developed in the last three years in these five factors. The impacts of these strategies cannot be evaluated yet, but we expect that they can improve the well-being of women in engineering and contribute to the reduction of the gender gaps. © 2023 IEEE

This paper addresses the potential of social media as places for citizen dialogue around memory and cultural identity of territories and their inhabitants. From the perspective of cultural anthropology and memory studies, an exploratory research is presented based on the content analysis of two Facebook groups linked to the city of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), accompanied by qualitative interviews with their administrators and with historians of the territory. The results explain some of the factors that contribute to the popularity of these virtual groups, based on the use of vernacular photography, and show how digital social networks have come to complement or replace functions that were once restricted to public and academic institutions, museums and archives. It is concluded that, despite their limitations, these groups, born in a specific historical and technological context, constitute important virtual places of memory. © 2022 Scientific Association Icono14. Bioaerosols are as small particles suspended in air that contain several microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and viruses). These particles are studied because of the possible impacts that they have on the health of humans and animals in open and closed spaces. In this study, the presence of airborne fungi presents in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) of the city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombian Caribbean was evaluated. Over 4 months (June–October 2018), 128 fungal samples were collected using a two-stage cascade impactor, and the fungi present in these samples were counted, characterized, and identified. Bioaerosol concentrations were correlated with meteorological data from the Rafael Núñez Airport meteorological station to establish the possible influence of these factors on the presence of bioaerosols. The results obtained showed an average concentration of fungal aerosols of 123.71 ± 17.97 UFC/m3, with the highest proportion occurring in the morning. The predominant genera were Aspergillus (60.8%), followed by Penicillium (24.5%) and Fusarium (9.3%). According to the correlations obtained from a multivariate analysis, the meteorological parameters did not influence the presence of microorganisms at the HEI studied; however, a possible influence of emission sources such as vegetation and industry is suggested. © 2022, The Author(s) under exclusive licence to Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy Sciences

    No full text
To give superficial importance to the cultural aspect in the context of collective reparation, particularly to the effects caused in this area to groups and communities of victims, can have serious repercussions on the comprehensiveness of reparation and its transformative effect. In this sense, a reflection on collective reparation that takes as an essential postulate the inclusion of the cultural aspect in the process is necessary, which constitutes the main objective of this work. For this purpose, the theoretical notes of the cultural approach to development and other approaches that nurture it are methodologically picked up as key elements towards a resizing of collective reparation. Finally, this reparation allows enhancing their transformative claim and opens the door to local and community development processes to make possible both the agency of their rights as victims, as well as their rights as individuals and citizensOtorgar una importancia superficial a lo cultural en el marco de la reparación colectiva, particularmente a las afectaciones causadas en este ámbito a grupos y comunidades de víctimas, puede generar serias repercusiones sobre la integralidad de la reparación y su efecto transformador.

Design and simulation of techniques for mitigation of harmonic distortion in a three-phase rectifier

    No full text
Rectifiers are electrical devices that receive an alternating signal and deliver a direct current signal at their output, this process by which they transform one type of energy to another is known as rectification. This type of device incorporates a phenomenon called harmonic distortion into the electrical network, which consists of malformations presented in the waveform of the alternating signal from which it feeds, which generate unwanted effects on electrical systems. Because of this, this work presents the combination of two harmonic distortion mitigation strategies (12-pulse multilevel converter and harmonic frequency tuned filtering stage) in order to reduce total harmonic distortion levels generated by a three-phase rectifier. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

Advancements in quantum machine learning for intrusion detection: A comprehensive overview

    No full text
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in quantum machine learning for intrusion detection systems. The authors review the state of the art based on the published work “Quantum Machine Learning for Intrusion Detection of Distributed Denial of Service Attacks: A Comparative View” and its relevant citations. The chapter discusses three quantum models, including quantum support vector machines, hybrid quantum-classical neural networks, and a two-circuit ensemble model, which run parallel on two quantum processing units. The authors compare the performance of these models in terms of accuracy and computational resource consumption. Their work demonstrates the effectiveness of quantum models in supporting current and future cybersecurity systems, achieving close to 100% accuracy, with 96% being the worst-case scenario. The chapter concludes with future research directions for this promising field

Me gradué y me fui a Nueva York (traducción propia)
