    No full text
This study investigated women’s participation in politics in Ushongo Local Government Area between 1999 and 2012. A survey research method was used as a research design guided by four research questions for the study. The study engaged both primary and secondary sources of data. Respondents were selected from the study area through cluster, purposive and random sampling methods. The Taro Yamane’s method of sample size determination was applied. The study implored the use of simple percentages and tables to present data collected from respondents using questionnaires as well as collaborative results from in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions. The findings of the study showed that Political Participation in Democratic Politics in Ushongo local Government among women has remained marginal leaving them conspicuously at the campaign and voting stages rather than competing for elective positions.Furthermore, the findings revealed many inhibiting factors against women which include social, economic, political and cultural/tradition which have been greatly responsible for marginal access to decision making positions offered by Democratic Politics. The study recommended that, electoral processes should be free of violence while quotas are built into the party executives and caucuses to encourage a balanced political structure in order to enhance women’s participation at the level of democratic politics in Ushongo Local Government of Benue State.SEL

A POST-COLONIAL READING OF SELECTED NOVELS OF CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE AND AKACHI ADIMORA-EZEIGBO

    No full text
This study is a post-colonial reading of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and Americanah; and Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo’s The last of the Strong Ones and House of Symbols. The analyses of the texts are based on the following post-colonial discourse elements: hybridity, appropriation, abrogation, affiliation and untranslated words. Through them, this study attempts to ascertain that the texts are exercises in post-colonialism in content, style, and characterisation. The study asserts that although post-colonial tenets underlie Nigerian literature, previous studies on the selected texts have not sufficiently explored the scope of interpretations that could accrue from a post-colonial insight. The study concludes that Adichie and Akachi have re-written history and literature to correct the Eurocentric misconceptions, misrepresentations, and assumptions against regarding formerly colonised nations. It also highlights the upheavals that have bedevilled them, arising from corruption, socio-economic and political failures, emphasising that these ills are primarily rooted in bad governance, not entirely on the departed colonialists.SEL

The study investigated climate change related factors and classroom management in public secondary schools in the North Central Zone of Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to investigate the extent to which climate change related factors in the areas of flood, changing rainfall patterns, drought, storm, excessive heat, excessive cold and poor visibility influence classroom management in public secondary schools. The study adopted survey research design. The population comprised 34, 473 teachers from 1, 949 public secondary schools. A sample of 1,000 teachers was taken for the questionnaire and 100 for the interview schedule from 50 public secondary schools using multi-stage sampling technique. Climate-Management Questionnaire (CMQ) with reliability coefficient of 0.88 and Teachers’ Interview Schedule on Climate Change Related Factors (TISCCRF) were used for data collection. Mean and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions. Chi-square and t-test were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that climate change related factors in the areas of flood, changing rainfall patterns, drought, storm, excessive heat, excessive cold and poor visibility have significant influence on classroom management in public secondary schools in the North Central Zone of Nigeria. The findings further revealed that there is a significant difference in the mean ratings of states on climate change related factors and classroom management in public secondary schools in the area. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that educational planners should make sure that henceforth, schools should not be sited in flood prone areas. They should make concerted efforts to train principals and teachers on disaster preparedness for those already sited in such areas; and that school management should take precautionary measures in maintaining school facilities that are exposed to continuous rainfall.SEL

This study investigated occupational stress and teachers’ job effectiveness in secondary schools in North Central States, Nigeria. Seven research questions and seven hypotheses guided the study. The literature was reviewed under theoretical framework, conceptual framework, empirical studies and summary. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 34,473 teachers in 1, 949 public secondary schools in the North Central States of Nigeria. A sample of 1034 teachers representing 3% was selected from 58 public secondary schools and used for the study. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to select the respondents for this study. A 35-item structured four-point scale questionnaire titled “Influence of Teachers’ Occupational Stress Questionnaire (ITOSQ)” and interview schedule was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts in Educational Management and Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was tested and it yielded a Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of 0.90 which was considered high enough and reliable to be used for field survey. Data obtained from the field study were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Frequency, percentages and charts were used in testing the responses from the interview while the chi-square (χ2) test of goodness of-fit was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicated that stress due to unconducive working environment, inadequate infrastructural facilities, excess workload inadequate instructional materials, lack of in-service training and students’ discipline have significant negative influence on teachers’ effectiveness in secondary schools in North Central States, Nigeria. It was recommended among others that the management of the secondary schools, that is the government, parents and other education stakeholders should make teachers work environment more conducive by giving more attention to the motivational needs of teachers such as fringe benefits, good offices, canteen, good recreation centres among others and also ensure good principal-teacher relationship, quiet, cool, clean and beautiful environment that will make the teachers relived of their work stress and be effective in the performance of their job

This study: Appraisal of the Contributions of Broadcast Media to National Integration in Nigeria, sought to investigate how the broadcast media have contributed to national integration and the extent to which such contributions have enhanced audience knowledge about the integration of Nigeria. Social Responsibility Media Theory anchored the study, while Development Media Theory, Agenda Setting Theory, and Neo-functionalism Theory supported the Social Responsibility Theory. Descriptive survey research was adopted as the design for this study while structured questionnaire and interview as well as in depth interview were used as the research instruments for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data while Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (R) was used to test the null hypothesis of the study. Findings revealed that through the functions they performed, the broadcast media have made great contributions by raising public knowledge and understanding about the need for political, socio-cultural, economic and religious harmony for the overall integration of the nation. This the broadcast media do through the use of different programme strategies but lack of in-depth and investigative reporting have reduced the desired impact of such strategies on the audience in towards the achievement of the national integration. Similarly, although the broadcast media have made great contributions to the integration of the country, such contributions have not been genuinely enough or adequate to take the nation to the desired level of integration that will subsequently lead the country to the destination of sustainable and sufficient peace, unity and development. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) plays very crucial roles in monitoring and regulating the broadcast media for professionalism but such contributions by the commission so far have not been genuinely enough to compel the nation’s broadcast media in attaining the level of professionalism desired to lead the country into the desired destination of national rebirth. Furthermore, the challenges the broadcast media faced prevented them from achieving the desired success in broadcasting for national integration in Nigeria. The result of the null hypothesis further justified these findings that “although there was a relationship between the broadcast media and national integration in Nigeria, such relationship was not significant enough to lead the country to a desired destination of national rebirth and integration.” The study, based on the findings concluded that the broadcast media are very instrumental in the integration of the nation but inappropriate utilization can prevent the broadcast media from leading the nation into the destination of complete and desired national rebirth and integration. That is why the study recommended that to lead the country like Nigeria into the desired and prosperous destination for national rebirth, the broadcast media must eschew partisanship; involve more in depth, analytical and investigative reporting, be monitored strictly by the National Broadcasting Commission, and be overhauled totally for greater outcomes in broadcasting for national integration in Nigeria

ASPECT SOCIOLINGUISTIQUE DE LA CRÉOLITÉ DANS LES ŒUVRES DE PATRICK CHAMOISEAU ET MARYSE CONDÉ

    Get PDF

Further, results shows that jointly organizational justices predicted vigor work engagement significantly (R2 = .254, p<0.05). Independently, distributive and procedural justices predicted vigor engagement. In line with hypothesis one, perceived organizational justices jointly and significantly predicted dedication engagement(Rz=.282, p<0.05). Independently, distributive and interactional justices significantly predicted dedication. Consistent with hypothesis one also, perceived organizational justices jointly and significantly predicted absorption engagement aZ2=.185, p<0.05). Independently, perceived interactional justice significantly predicted absorption engagement. Consistent with hypothesis two, perceived psychological empowerment variables jointly and significantly predicted overall work engagement (R2=.344, p<0.05). Independently, perceived meaning and impact significantly predicted overall work engagement. Consistent with hypothesis two, perceived psychological empowerment predicted vigor engagement (R2=.270, p<0.05). Independently, meaning and impact significantly predicted vi&or. Perceived psychological empowerment jointly and significantly predicted dedication (R`=.321, p<0.05). Independently, meaning significantly predicted dedication. Perceived psychological empowerment variables jointly and significantly predicted absorption engagement (R2=.181; p<0.05). Independently, meaning significantly predicted absorption. Perceived organizational justice and psychological empowerment jointly and significantly predicted overall work engagement (R2=.305; p<0.05).The two predictor variables significantly predicted vigor and dedication engagement. This is consistent with hypothesis three. It is then recommended that managers of banks should consciously ensure distributive and interactional justices in the workplace as this inspires work engagement among bank employees. They should also provide necessary resources that leads to affective psychological work related state of mind. To ensure justice in the banking sector, equity should be allowed to take its place in line with the input —output ratio of each employee
