    An Update on RNA Virus Discovery: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives

    The relentless emergence of RNA viruses poses a perpetual threat to global public health, necessitating continuous efforts in surveillance, discovery, and understanding of these pathogens. This review provides a comprehensive update on recent advancements in RNA virus discovery, highlighting breakthroughs in technology and methodologies that have significantly enhanced our ability to identify novel viruses across diverse host organisms. We explore the expanding landscape of viral diversity, emphasizing the discovery of previously unknown viral families and the role of zoonotic transmissions in shaping the viral ecosystem. Additionally, we discuss the potential implications of RNA virus discovery on disease emergence and pandemic preparedness. Despite remarkable progress, current challenges in sample collection, data interpretation, and the characterization of newly identified viruses persist. Our ability to anticipate and respond to emerging respiratory threats relies on virus discovery as a cornerstone for understanding RNA virus evolution. We address these challenges and propose future directions for research, emphasizing the integration of multi-omic approaches, advanced computational tools, and international collaboration to overcome barriers in the field. Pero su consumo se ha asociado el desarrollo de enfermedad cardiovascular y obesidad. Por ello, se impulsa la búsqueda de alternativas para sustituirla. Entre estas surge el acuafaba, solución acuosa que resulta de cocinar legumbres como el garbanzo, dado sus propiedades emulsionantes, gelificantes y espesantes.     Chitosan-alginate microcapsules: A strategy for improving stability and antibacterial potential of bovine Lactoferrin

    Lactoferrin, a multifunctional glycoprotein with significant biological properties, presents significant potential for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. However, the effectiveness of oral Lactoferrin is limited by its susceptibility to degradation in harsh stomach conditions, reducing its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. To address this challenge, this study employs Chitosan/Alginate microparticles to enhance Lactoferrin stability and antibacterial activity. Microparticles were synthesized through external ionic gelation and thoroughly characterized. Chitosan/Alginate microparticles were significantly smaller than Alginate microparticles, with a high loading efficiency of 93.65 %. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful incorporation of Lactoferrin. Release studies demonstrated minimal Lactoferrin release in simulated gastric fluid, while a controlled release was observed in simulated intestinal fluid. Notably encapsulated Lactoferrin retained its structural integrity after exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Antibacterial assay against Escherichia coli showed that Chitosan/Alginate microcapsules maintain Lactoferrin antibacterial activity after its passage through simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Furthermore, FT-IR spectroscopy and zeta-potential analysis provided novel insights into the mechanism of Lactoferrin's interaction with bacterial LPS, highlighting its ability to destabilize bacterial membrane of this Escherichia coli strain.     Effects on neuroprotection and α-synuclein expression of a Canna coccinea rhizome extract

    Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the elderly, currently with no cure. Its mechanisms are not well understood, however α-synuclein protein aggregation plays a central role in the pathogenesis of PD, leading to neurodegeneration. We demonstrated that in a PD model dietary in Caenorhabditis elegans treatment with an extract from the rhizome of Canna coccinea decreased the accumulation of α-synuclein. The extract showed low toxicity to neuro 2a cells and protected them from oxidative damage with H2O2 as a model for neurodegeneration. We studied the chemical profile of the extract using liquid chromatography couple to Mass Spectrometry. In order to characterize the herbal extract, we quantified rosmarinic acid as a marker compound and measured its antioxidant activity in vitro.     Use of models for identification of nitrogen fertilization strategies for filling feeding gaps of cow-calf systems in the Flooding Pampas of Argentina

    CONTEXT: Nitrogen availability is the primary limitation for the growth of tall fescue, Argentina's most widely cultivated cool-season pasture. Significant yield gaps exist in fescue pastures on commercial farms, where average annual yields are around 5 t/ha, compared to a potential yield of 10 to 15 t/ha. Nitrogen fertilization remains uncommon among cow-calf producers, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between nitrogen fertilizer management, stocking rate, and grazing management at the whole-farm level. Considering annual and inter-annual variations in pasture growth could enable regional beef producers to make more informed decisions, improving pasture yield potential, utilization, and overall farm profitability. OBJECTIVES: I) to identify if N fertilization in autumn can boost pasture growth rates as reliable source of extra feed in autumn and winter, taking into account climate variability, and II) to assess how this affects farm-level productivity and profitability. METHODS: An integrated modelling approach, combining a pasture model with a farm system beef cattle model, was employed. Various N fertilizer options (specifically, 100 kg N/ha applied in either autumn or spring) were allocated to 20 % and 40 % of farm areas, across stocking rates ranging from 0.9 to 1.3 head/ha. Simulations were conducted over the long term (1993–2013), focusing on tall fescue pasture growth. Seasonal pasture growth curves were calculated for each year, with particular attention given to identifying average years as well as those with dry autumns or dry springs. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: In average years, increasing the stocking rate by 44 %, from 0.9 head/ha to 1.3, led to a 34 % increase in live weight production in weaner calves and improved gross margins by 30 %. Applying 100 kg N/ha to 20 % of the cow-calf farm, either in autumn or spring, enabled a stocking rate of 1.1 head/ha (a 22 % increase), sustaining gross margins even during dry seasons. Autumn fertilization produced a substantial residual yield response, with an average increase of +1.43 tons/ha in the following spring, and finally Expanding the fertilized area from 20 % to 40 % of the farm did not provide additional economic benefits. SIGNIFICANCE: This study provides valuable, forward-looking insights into how nitrogen fertilization strategies can improve productivity and profitability of cow-calf farms in the Flooding Pampas, especially under variable seasonal climate conditions.     Gene-based model to predict heading date in wheat based on allelic characterization and environmental drivers

    While numerous wheat phenology prediction models are available, most of them are constrained to using variety-dependent coefficients. The overarching objective of this study was to calibrate a gene-based model to predict wheat heading date that allows breeders to select specific gene combinations that would head within the optimal window for a given environment independently of varietal genetic background. A dataset with a total of 49 Argentine wheat cultivars and two recombinant inbred lines was chosen to cover a wide range of allelic combinations for major vernalization, photoperiod, and earliness per se genes. The model was validated using independent data from an Argentine wheat trial network that includes sites from a wide latitudinal range. Ultimately, using this gene-based model, simulations were made to identify optimal gene combinations (ideotypes) × site combinations in contrasting locations. The selected model accurately predicted heading date with an overall median error of 4.6 d. This gene-based crop model for wheat phenology allowed the identification of groups of gene combinations predicted to produce heads within a low-risk window and can be adapted to predict other phenological stages based on accessible climatic information and publicly available molecular markers, facilitating its adoption in wheat-growing regions worldwide.EEA Marcos JuárezFil: Jardón, Mariana.
