Piezophilic Phenotype Is Growth Condition Dependent and Correlated with the Regulation of Two Sets of ATPase in Deep-Sea Piezophilic Bacterium Photobacterium profundum SS9
International audienceAlteration of respiratory components as a function of pressure is a common strategy developed in deep-sea microorganisms, presumably to adapt to high hydrostatic pressure (HHP). While the electron transport chain and terminal reductases have been extensively studied in deepsea bacteria, little is known about their adaptations for ATP generation. In this study, we showed that the deep-sea bacterium Photobacterium profundum SS9 exhibits a more pronounced piezophilic phenotype when grown in minimal medium supplemented with glucose (MG) than in the routinely used MB2216 complex medium. The intracellular ATP level varied with pressure, but with opposite trends in the two culture media. Between the two ATPase systems encoded in SS9, ATPase-I played a dominant role when cultivated in MB2216, whereas ATPase-II was more abundant in the MG medium, especially at elevated pressure when cells had the lowest ATP level among all conditions tested. Further analyses of the ∆atpI, ∆atpE1 and ∆atpE2 mutants showed that disrupting ATPase-I induced expression of ATPase-II and that the two systems are functionally redundant in MB2216. Collectively, we provide the first examination of the differences and relationships between two ATPase systems in a piezophilic bacterium, and expanded our understanding of the involvement of energy metabolism in pressure adaptation
Innovative SMEs Collabotaring with Others in Europe
International audienceThe following article investigates the determinants that lead innovative SMEs to collaborate. Data from 36 European countries is analyzed using Panel Data with Fixed Effects, Panel Data with Random Effects, Pooled OLS, WLS and Dynamic Panel models. The analysis shows that the ability of innovative SMEs to collaborate is positively associated with the following variables: "Linkages", "Share High and Medium high-tech manufacturing", "Finance and Support", "Broadband Penetration", "Non-R&D Innovation Expenditure" and negatively to the following variables: "New Doctorate graduates", "Venture Capital", "Foreign Controlled Enterprises Share of Value Added", "Public-Private Co-Publications", "Population Size", "Private co-funding of Public R&D expenditures". A clustering with k-Means algorithm optimized by the Silhouette coefficient was then performed and four clusters were found. A network analysis was then carried out and the result shows the presence of three composite structures of links between some European countries. Furthermore, a comparison was made between eight different predictive machine learning algorithms and the result shows that the Random Forest Regression algorithm performs better and predicts a reduction in the ability of innovative SMEs to collaborate equal to an average of 4.4%. Later a further comparison is made with augmented data. The results confirm that the best predictive algorithm is Random Forest Regression, the statistical errors of the prediction decrease on average by 73.5%, and the ability of innovative SMEs to collaborate is predicted to growth by 9.2%
International audienceFaced with the challenges presented by climate change, many interfaces presenting feedback on available, consumed or saved energy resources have been proposed to support a change of behavior towards a more environmental one in the field of sustainable HCI. If, for this purpose, bio-inspired systems have been proposed, few of them are presented in a tangible way or as histograms. This, despite encouraging results, as much in terms of awareness of energy consumption as in terms of emotional connection developed with the system, of artistic interfaces aiming at the commitment in an environmental behavior. With the aim of designing a system to support users in a shared practice of shifting energy demand, we present the results of the first steps of our approach. This paper focuses on design choice validation at an early stage of the design and development cycle, before spending time and money on physical prototyping; studying behavior change remains outside the scope of this work. Thus, the results presented concern the effectiveness and UX of static and animated mock-ups of eco-prediction and eco-feedback interfaces in the form of bio-inspired histograms. The results indicate that the efficacy of a bio-inspired histogram compared to a conventional histogram is lower. The second study shows that part of this loss of efficacy can be resolved by contextualizing the data. Also, without being significative, the leaf plant metaphor is found to be more effective and aesthetic than a metaphor closer to a classical histogram inspired by bamboo. We conclude that the leaf plant metaphor can be used for an eco-forecast and eco-feedback interface in the form of a histogram to shift the energy demand of battery-capable devices.
Infinite-dimensional internal models for nonlinear robust output regulation
We consider the problem of robust asymptotic output regulation of nonlinear systems in the presence of generic unstructured nonlinear model uncertainties. Inspired by recent results establishing that this problem cannot be solved by a finite dimensional smooth regulator, we propose a new paradigm based on the use of linear infinite-dimensional internal models. As a special case, we consider the problem of output regulation in the presence of quasi-periodic signals, e.g. signals composed by a sum of periodic signals with incommensurable periods
