A flexible class of generalized joint frailty models for the analysis of survival endpoints
International audienceThis article focuses on shared frailty models for correlated failure times, as well as joint frailty models for the simultaneous analysis of recurrent events (eg, appearance of new cancerous lesions or hospital readmissions) and a major terminal event (typically, death). As extensions of the Cox model, these joint models usually assume a frailty proportional hazards model for each of the recurrent and terminal event processes. In order to extend these models beyond the proportional hazards assumption, our proposal is to replace these proportional hazards models with generalized survival models, for which the survival function is modeled as a linear predictor through a link function. Depending on the link function considered, these can be reduced to proportional hazards, proportional odds, additive hazards, or probit models. We first consider a fully parametric framework for the time and covariate effects. For proportional and additive hazards models, our approach also allows the use of smooth functions for baseline hazard functions and time-varying coefficients. The dependence between recurrent and terminal event processes is modeled by conditioning on a shared frailty acting differently on the two processes. Parameter estimates are provided using the maximum (penalized) likelihood method, implemented in the R package frailtypack (function GenfrailtyPenal). We perform simulation studies to assess the method, which is also illustrated on real datasets

Berthing Criteria For Wind Turbine Crew Transfer Vessel With Low Or High Friction Fender
Boat access against a boat landing is realized by means of fenders made of rubber. Depending on their stiffness, the behavior of the boat with the waves will be different. The works performed use the following methodology: 1. The calculation of the efforts of a monochromatic wave applied against the boat in the case she can heave (low friction) or not (high friction). 2. The calculation of the fender friction coefficient against the boat landing. 3. The comparison of the berthing criteria with those from another publication. 4. The comparison of the berthing criteria with a low or high friction fender. The following results are found for a 27m catamaran: Low (high) friction fender berthing is possible with 1.5m (0.5m) Hs, or with 2m for small wave periods
Metallic ions coming from natural sources orantropogenic activities are present in the Earth watersfrom phreatic tables to deep oceans. Their influence onthe biotopes and the human health, even at very lowconcentrations, is actively studied. So far, most of theanalyzes are done in laboratories and there is a necessityto develop an in-situ sensor to provide a in-field meansof monitoring.Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) based sensors arewidely used in the biodetection field for the monitoringof chemical species at concentration as low as nanomo-lar. The most common type of SPR sensors is based onthe measure of the reflectivity variations, of a 50 nm thickgold film, when a target chemical specie is captured bymolecular probes grafted on the gold surface. The ima-ging capacity of this type of sensors allow the simulta-neous detection of differents chemical species. Moreover, their inherent low working range can be overcome by aninterrogation of the plasmon properties through the useof a multispectral light source. Thus, the gold film is illu-minated by a finite number of different wavelengths andthanks to this set of images, the spectral position of theplasmonic resonance is calculated over the whole goldfilm. The adsorption of a chemical specie on the surfaceleads to a shift of this spectral position which is propor-tional to the concentration. This multispectral source, aswell as the whole SPR sensors, needs to be compact, po-wer efficient and robust, among other constraints relatedto submarine application. In order to detect metallic ions, Ion Imprinted Po-lymers (IIP) have been chosen as specific molecularprobes. The IIP specificity to imprinted ions comes fromboth electrostatic interaction and the geometry of speci-fic cavities frozen in the polymer matrix. A method hasbeen developped to synthetize and to graft these poly-mers as thin films on the gold surface and to control theirthickness at the nanometric scale. Detection of copperand zinc has been achieved at concentrations as low asabout 500 nM in controlled samples and in a laboratoryenvironment.

International audienceThrough the motif of historical horizons, a persistent gesture in Rivera’s work is examined: the writing of fiction concerned with the history of the nineteenth century in a later moment defined by the coincidence of the crisis of Marxism and the increase of memory expressions (Traverso). From family memories of anti-Semitism and anticommunism through postcolonial consideration of the history of Argentina, United Kingdom and France, a “losing and resisting” tradition is quitely traced, shaped with revolutionaries who lose their fights against the vanquishers. In this imaginary work, historic references interact with literary traditions, which are invoked to let us hear the whispers of the dead. By the side of the specter of Marx, appears, thinly veiled, the specter of Shakespeare, so that beyond social and deterministic realism, fiction adopts a theatricality which renders visible the recurrences of history.
Relating different dimensions of bodily experiences: Review and proposition of an integrative model relying on phenomenology, predictive brain and neuroscience of the self
International audienceHow we mentally experience our body has been studied in a variety research domains. Each of these domains focuses in its own ways on different aspects of the body, namely the neurophysiological, perceptual, affective or social components, and proposes different conceptual taxonomies. It is therefore difficult to find one's way through this vast literature and to grasp the relationships between the different dimensions of bodily experiences. In this narrative review, we summarize the existing research directions and present their limits. We propose an integrative framework, grounded in studies on phenomenal consciousness, selfconsciousness and bodily self-consciousness, that can provide a common basis for evaluating findings on different dimensions of bodily experiences. We review the putative mechanisms, relying on predictive processes, and neural substrates that support this model. We discuss how this model enables a conceptual assessment of the interrelationships between multiple dimensions of bodily experiences and potentiate interdisciplinary approaches
Teaching wet corrosion of metals and alloys: An example of enrichment of the basis practical works with the case of orthodontic steels in artificial saliva
International audienceTo consolidate the knowledge in corrosion acquired by students during courses and theoretic exercises, practical works are highly important. This is already true when the corrosion behavior of pure metals is explored in a broad variety of simple solutions. This can be strengthened further by applying characterizing methods and sense of observation to more complex problems to make a bridge with professional cases that young graduated may be faced with. In the present work, we considered one of the numerous professional situations in which theoretic and practical corrosion teaching may be involved: to anticipate possible long term corrosion for arch wires made of austenitic stainless steel, to be much more aware of the importance of the contents in key elements as chromium, and also to define pertinent protocols for performing tests representative enough. By elaborating a series of model steels with various Cr contents using the specific means of a laboratory of research in materials sciences, and by preparing-in the practical works room-experimental devices and electrolytes to be closest possible to the real conditions of use of arch wires (buccal environment characteristics: human body temperature, complex saliva composition), a supplementary experiment conducted in parallel to the usual series of practical works may also contribute to justify/ legitimate further the training in the anticipation of corrosion problems and the possible ways for their limitations
