    Driving anger dimensions and their relationship with aberrant driver behavior in Lebanon: Results from a national self-reported survey

    International audienceDriving anger may vary across countries due to culture. This might affect driver behavior, which, in turn, impacts the driving outcomes. This study aims to investigate the relationship between socio-demographic variables, driving anger, and the self-reported aberrant behavior among Lebanese drivers and to determine which anger dimension is linked to driving behavior. A cross-sectional study was conducted among eligible Lebanese drivers from all Lebanese governorates. Data were collected using an anonymous Arabic self-reported questionnaire that included demographic information, driving-related variables, and two scales: the Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) and the Driver Anger Scale (DAS). Four hierarchical regressions were performed taking the DBQ subscales as the dependent variable and the DAS subscales as independent variables. Out of 1102 surveyed drivers, 68.4% were males, having a mean age of 34.6 ± 12.3 years and an average driving experience of 13.5 ± 10.8 years. DBQ, DAS, and their subscales showed good reliability. Older age and female gender were negatively associated with the tendency of committing aggressive violations. However, being a professional driver and increasing annual mileage were positively associated with a higher tendency to commit aggressive violations. In addition to these factors, a higher educational level was found associated with a lower risk of driver's involvement in traffic violations. However, increased driving experience was associated with a higher tendency to commit aggressive violations. Reported driving errors were also found positively associated with older age, increasing mileage, and being a professional driver. However, larger driving experience and higher education were found protectors from erroneous behavior. Hierarchical regression showed that anger prompted by hostile gesture, discourtesy, police presence, traffic obstruction, and slow driving were positively associated with aggressive violations. All the DAS subscales were found to be positively associated with ordinary violations. traffic obstruction was also found associated with a higher tendency of drivers to commit lapses, as well as anger, which originated from police presence and slow driving which were found also positively associated with errors. Driver anger dimensions were found positively associated with aberrant driver behavior. To overcome road anger, there is a need to train drivers on coping strategies to restrain aberrant driving behavior

    Elastic Similarity Measures for Multivariate Time Series Classification

    International audienceElastic similarity measures are a class of similarity measures specifically designed to work with time series data. When scoring the similarity between two time series, they allow points that do not correspond in timestamps to be aligned. This can compensate for misalignments in the time axis of time series data, and for similar processes that proceed at variable and differing paces. Elastic similarity measures are widely used in machine learning tasks such as classification, clustering and outlier detection when using time series data. There is a multitude of research on various univariate elastic similarity measures. However, except for multivariate versions of the well known Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) there is a lack of work to generalise other similarity measures for multivariate cases. This paper adapts two existing strategies used in multivariate DTW, namely, Independent and Dependent DTW, to several commonly used elastic similarity measures. Using 23 datasets from the University of East Anglia (UEA) multivariate archive, for nearest neighbour classification, we demonstrate that each measure outperforms all others on at least one dataset and that there are datasets for which either the dependent versions of all measures are more accurate than their independent counterparts or vice versa. This latter finding suggests that these differences arise from a fundamental property of the data. We also show that an ensemble of such nearest neighbour classifiers is highly competitive with other state-of-the-art multivariate time series classifiers

    A non-cooperative resource utilization game between two competing malware

    International audienceIn this paper, we consider a population of digital nodes (such as phones, computers, etc.) that are under the attack of two competing malware. These malware infect the nodes in order to exploit their computational resources for specific purposes such as mining crypto-currency, cloud computing, etc. We suppose that each virus spreads following the susceptibleinfected-susceptible (SIS) compartmental model. Additionally, we assume that the malware designers can tune the percentage of resource utilization from their host nodes. A higher resource utilization implies a higher instantaneous profit but will also lead to faster detection and elimination (node recovery) of the malware. Once the malware is detected, complete protection of the infected node by means of anti-malware software is also possible at a smaller rate. The proposed setup results in a non-cooperative game between the two players (the malware designers) trying to maximize their profit i.e., the resources utilized from the infected nodes. We characterize and analyze the Nash equilibrium for such a game using a timescale separation approximation. Finally, we numerically validate the approximation and we compute the price of anarchy

    International audienceThe aim of this article is to propose an articulation between the so-called French discourse analysis and the notions of intersectionality and decoloniality that are currently at work in the human and social sciences in France. It describes the conditions of an alternative epistemology capable of decentring knowledge and intellectual technologies of the discipline, and suggests ways of reworking its theoretical apparatus in order to take into account in linguistic analysis the conditions of existence of subjects and their journeys from one world to another within a pluriverse framework. We first define the chosen version of intersectionality and the decolonial perspective, showing what they can bring to discourse analysis as an enriching and emancipating perspective. We then specify the contours of an alternative epistemology, on the level of knowledge and methods, by insisting on the questions of the points of view and experiences of the subjects, and on the scientific as well as political choice of references and quotations. Finally, we propose the notion of coloniality of discourse, which allows us to rework in an intersectional decolonial dimension the questions of denomination and subjectivity.L'objectif de cet article est de proposer une articulation entre l'analyse du discours dite française et les notions d'intersectionnalité et de décolonialité qui travaillent actuellement les sciences humaines et sociales en France. Il décrit les conditions d'une épistémologie alternative apte à décentrer les savoirs et les technologies intellectuelles de la discipline, et suggère des manières de retravailler son appareillage théorique pour prendre en compte dans l'analyse linguistique les conditions d'existence des sujets et leurs voyages d'un monde à l'autre dans le cadre d'un plurivers. On définit d'abord la version de l'intersectionnalité choisie et la perspective décoloniale, en montrant ce qu'elles peuvent apporter à l'analyse du discours comme perspective enrichissante et émancipatrice. On précise ensuite les contours d'une épistémologie alternative, sur le plan des savoirs et des méthodes, en insistant sur les questions des points de vue et des expériences des sujets, et sur le choix tant scientifique que politique des références et des citations.     A state-of-the-art review on uncertainty analysis of rotor systems

    International audienceUncertainty handling and analysis of rotor systems have been active research areas during the last two decades. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on the research progress of uncertainty treatment in rotor systems. Firstly, sources of uncertainties are identified and then classified according to their nature. Secondly, the most popular uncertainty analysis methods are summarized based on different types of uncertainties, including their basic principles, strengths and limitations. Thirdly, the dynamic characteristics of rotor systems under various uncertainties are described in detail, i.e., the natural characteristics and unbalanced responses, faulted rotor dynamics, stability problems and parameter identifications. Then, the reliability analysis, optimizations and vibration control for uncertain rotor systems are reviewed. Finally, comments on the latest research progress are made and outlooks on future research directions are highlighted. It is expected that this review will provide useful guidelines for designers and researchers towards the more efficient handling of uncertainty and robust dynamic analysis for rotor systems as well as insightful prospects, showing where extra efforts are needed

    International audienceThe formation of alkaline earth(II)triscarbonatouranyl(VI) (AenUO2(CO3)3(4-2n)-) species that have been evidenced both in laboratory and in-field studies, is important from slightly acidic pH up to near degraded cementitious in carbonated waters. They are also showing distinctive luminescence properties with a hypsochromic shift relative to UO22+. The conditions of pH, activities of alkaline earth(II) free ions (mostly Mg2+ and Ca2+) and carbonate ions (HCO3−) can be predicted from the thermodynamic functions and constants. The predictive validity of the activity of major alkaline ions (mostly Na+) is determined from the models used to describe the ionic strength comportment of these species, particularly using coefficients from the specific ion interaction theory (SIT). The stability domains of these species are better defined as a function of the activity of the constituents, and applied to natural waters. In this work, using recently obtained complete thermodynamic data and SIT coefficients, we will draw the stability domains of the AenUO2(CO3)3(4-2n)- species in combinations of activities of H+, HCO3−, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Na+ for a wide selection of water compositions from the literature. Water samples were collected near a French mining legacy-site (Site du Bosc, Lodève, France). After determining the major ion compositions, we will verify that the luminescence signal of uranium is in agreement with the predicted speciation in the stability domains
