A Qualitative Inquiry Examining The Lived Experiences Of African American Male Doctors
Get PDFDespite the increased attention to diversity by the academic medicine community, African American men are still underrepresented in medicine. It is still being determined how or to what extent the projected physician shortage can be addressed by increasing African American men in medicine. This study explored the lived experience of African American male doctors who successfully matriculated and graduated from U.S. medical schools. The findings may provide valuable insight into how the lived experience of existing African American male doctors can be leveraged to increase African American men within medical pathways. The following research questions were constructed to guide the study: (1) What are the lived experiences of African American male physicians? (2) How do the academic medicine system factors influence an African American male\u27s trajectory into medicine? This study followed a thematic analysis to explore the lived experiences of African American male physicians.

(R2061) Differential Equations Involving a New Definition of Complex Number Derivatives
Get PDFThe recently proposed complex number differential operator is used in formulating ordinary differential equations for the first time. The differential operator definition is totally different than the real number differentiation of complex valued functions. The basic definitions and properties of the differential operator are given first. Various linear differential equations are treated containing the new differential operator. Associated theorems with the differential equations are given. Then the nonlinear differential equations of complex valued functions are treated. In separated form, the complex differential operator equations lead to nonlinear coupled real valued equations. Various nonlinear differential equations with complex number derivatives are written and solved. Finally, the geometric meaning of the new differential operator is discussed in the last section. A physical example involving complex derivatives are given. The topic may lead to a broad range of applications in several branches of sciences that employ differential equations for mathematical modelling of their problems
The Predictable Relationship between Demographic Factors and Persistence of First-Year Students at a Historically Black College & University
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationship and predictability of demographic factors, on the persistence rates among first-year, full-time, four-year degree-seeking students at a Historically Black College and University. Specifically, this study focused on the predictive power of demographic factors (gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status), and (high school GPA and number of hours passed) on the persistence rates among first-year, full-time, four-year degree-seeking students attending a Historically Black College and University.
The study approached the research questions from a correlational research design perspective. This type of research design was the most appropriate for this study because the researcher examined the predictable relationship between two or more predictor variables and one criterion variable (Babbie, 2014). This approach is centered on gathering statistical data. Further, this type of research method enables the researcher the opportunity to analyze the linear combination effects of the predictor variables on the criterion variable (Gay et al., 2016)
